Chapter 147 - Investigation

Phil Coulson wore a troubled expression. If not for the high-end suit issued by S.H.I.E.L.D., he'd be indistinguishable from a middle-aged, unemployed man whose ex-wife had taken all his assets.

He got out of the car, looking at the now completely unfamiliar town of Racetas. The entire town had vanished, razed to the ground. In its place stood a factory and a seemingly endless expanse of grassland.

A sprawling wooden fence enclosed the vast farm, signaling private property.

Phil Coulson spread his arms, feeling the fresh air blowing from the grassland. The cool breeze carried a refreshing scent of hay, which invigorated him with each breath.

He found the air here exceptionally clean, making him feel refreshed.

For his missions, Phil Coulson had traveled almost everywhere in the world, yet he could barely recall air that was better than this.

A thought crossed his mind: maybe he could consider buying a farm for retirement.

"I almost don't recognize this place anymore."

A S.H.I.E.L.D. agent sighed, recalling how he'd searched every inch of the nearby desert, trying to find the mysterious giant ape. If the GPS hadn't been foolproof, he would have thought he was in the wrong place.

"Let's go and get a read on this Kade fellow."

S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't taking Kade's appearance in New York City lightly. In Natasha's sharp eyes, there were still many unclear points about him. After reviewing her report, Nick Fury had dispatched Phil Coulson, who was always on the move.

After all, Agent Coulson had been on a long mission in this desert before and knew the area well. His goal wasn't to capture Kade, but to determine Tessa's condition and to figure out Kade's background.

Phil Coulson walked forward and pressed the doorbell. With a click, the intercom connected.

"Hello, this is Racetas Farm, who are you looking for?"

Kade's voice came from the other end of the intercom.

"I'm a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. We have some questions to ask Tessa, Mr. Eagle."

Phil Coulson said. He could hear the breathing on the other end of the comms suddenly become rapid.

"Uh, okay, I'll be right there."

Phil Coulson hung up the comms and waited patiently for Kade to arrive.

After a while, they finally saw a brand-new Ford F-150 Raptor pickup truck appear in their field of vision. Kade got out of the car and opened the farm gate.

He eyed Phil Coulson's group with a wary gaze.

"What do you want to know?"

Phil Coulson shook hands with him, a harmless smile on his face.

"Don't worry, Mr. Eagle, we're all Bob's colleagues. This is just a routine investigation."

Kade could only drive the two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents onto the farm.

Along the way, the lush alfalfa swayed like waves, dotted with purple alfalfa flowers. Occasionally, they could see the Angus Cattle leisurely grazing on the pasture.

\n\n

Although Phil Coulson didn't understand farm work, he saw that the cows were sleek and shiny, their coats gleaming. As they moved, their smooth muscle contours were visible, indicating that these cows were carefully raised and were all valuable.

\n\n

Could Kade really be just an ordinary farmer, and Clark Kent just an ordinary investor?

\n\n

Phil Coulson felt a doubt arise, his previous guess wavering. The condition of the cattle couldn't be faked. Raising such a large herd of cattle required a lot of effort. If the farm was just a front for money laundering, they could have just raised some cows to fool the FBI and the IRS.

\n\n

"These are Angus Cattle. You wouldn't recognize them, right? Only our farm can raise these cows so well. Not just Austin, but even high-end restaurants in New York and Los Angeles come to our farm to buy beef."

\n\n

Kade said with some pride.

\n\n

The farm's flagship product was originally the vegetables in the fields, especially the tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, and basil. When the restaurant buyers saw that the farm also raised beef cattle, and that they were in good condition, they tried purchasing a small amount. To their surprise, the quality of the beef from the farm was unexpectedly excellent. The marbling was even, with lean meat and fat skillfully intertwined, making the meat very delicate, tender, and juicy, truly the top-grade Angus Cattle.

These Angus Cattle lived right under Cacaro's and a group of carnivores' noses. They got far more exercise than regular beef cattle, and, combined with the high-quality alfalfa grown by Eclipse, their meat was naturally exceptional.

Recently, due to the pure, spiritual energy released during the Celestial Tribulation, the beef quality was improving even further.

Now, after satisfying Broly and Cacaro's appetites, Kade chose to sell a small amount of the beef. The income quickly surpassed that of the vegetables.

Broly's concept of money was that enough was enough, so he distributed most of the farm's earnings.

This month, almost every assassin received over ten thousand in salary and bonuses. Some diligent workers got nearly twenty thousand, and Eclipse even got thirty thousand. This income exceeded their previous earnings as assassins.

In Mexican gangs, the upper-middle-level leaders naturally lived lavish lifestyles, earning a fortune daily. But it was different for the lower-level assassins and gunmen; their income was meager, only receiving payment for risking their lives during gang conflicts. Some couldn't even afford rent and had to live with their girlfriends or mothers.

After crossing the grasslands, there was a shimmering artificial lake and vast rice paddies. A few farmhands were tending to the rice paddies, and further away were vegetable gardens and orchards, creating a peaceful and vibrant scene.

Phil Coulson recognized that the farmhands were all Mexicans. This was the U.S.-Mexico border, so it was perfectly normal for some smuggled Mexicans to appear on the farm. S.H.I.E.L.D. wasn't the immigration bureau, and they didn't bother with such matters.

The pickup truck stopped in front of an exquisite villa.

"Daddy!"

Tessa frowned, sizing up the two agents who got out of the car. She'd already had a lot of dealings with S.H.I.E.L.D. because of the interspecies gene transplant project.

"Don't worry, Tessa, we just need to ask a few simple questions."

Phil Coulson surveyed the treadmill outside the villa. His attention was drawn to the iron cage on the treadmill, and he asked Kade with some curiosity, "What's this? Is it a torture device you use on lazy laborers?"
