Chapter 13: The Elven royal family

After a long awkward ride, which I swear seemed a hell of a lot longer than it had been, we finally reached the castle, well more of a tree than a castle actually, made from white stone which probably was somehow petrified.

The interior was as impressive, two circular stairways created a circle with a floating chandelier at its middle. This chandelier was made of similar motes of light.

Arthur had informed the King and Queen that he would rather explain what happened before resting so that's what he did.

We were escorted to a rectangular table downstairs. The king sat on one end of the table while Art and me were seated at the other, the Queen sat perpendicularly to the King with Tessia sat right beside her. The elder was sitting right across the pair which left a pretty wide gap between us.

With elbows resting on the table and fingers intertwined the king spoke, "Young ones, what did you say your names were?"

Before I could say anything Arthur spoke, "Forgive me for the late introduction. My name is Arthur Leywin and my companion here is my twin brother Fayden Leywin, we come from a remote town in the Kingdom of Sapin. A pleasure to make your acquaintance King, Queen, Elder, and gentlemen."

"It's an honor to meet the royal family" I said with a bow.

This level of maturity in both of us sported a look of surprise on the faces of the King, Queen and the royal guards, while the elder had an amused smirk.

After regaining his stoic composure the King continued, "You two seem more mature than I had assumed. My name is Alduin Eralith and this is my wife, Merial Eralith and my father Virion Eralith. We would like to know what happenes from your side."

And so Arthur began retelling what happened, how he got to the Elshire forest and how he was separated from our family.

When he told them that he was a mage everyone had looks of utter disbelief, one of the guards branded him a liar and demanded proof that he was a mage when surprising elder Virion shut him up.

He explained how he got to the carriage and rescued the princess.

The King slammed his hands on the table and spat menacingly, "I should've known it was humans.."

At this I decided to speak up, " With all due respect the actions of a few slave traders do not define an entire race of people, if that was the case shouldn't Arthur rescuing the princess brand all humans as saviors of elves?"

"You dare-!" A guard spoke up only to be silenced by a withering glare from Tessia's grandfather.

"So you say these slave traders took my granddaughter and you as a child,what, negotiated with them, begged for mercy?" chimes in elder Virion.

"No Elder Virion, I eliminated them and rescued your grand daughter." Arthur responds.

After ending the explanation he asked the important question, "As I have mentioned, it has been almost four months since we have seen our parents. We do not plan to intrude on your kingdom for long as We wish to meet them quickly, so I was wondering if you guys had a teleportation gate that could take us to the City of Xyrus or anywhere inside Sapin."

Rude he didn't even discuss with me if I wanted to go back right now or not. Well my answer would've been the same anyways, as much as I wanted to stay and explore the elven city we have been away from mom and dad for too long and they probably think we're dead so it'd be best we leave asap.

"Wait, you're leaving already Art?" Tessia exclaims with a panic striken face, while the King and Queen had simar looks of bafflement.

Her grandfather however just gave a snide grin and chuckled.

"I don't think it's appropriate for a human such as us to be inside this Kingdom for too long, Princess. Besides, I wish to make sure that my family is safe and tell them we're okay as well," He replied, with a sheepish smile.

The King responds now, "It has been a couple hundred years since the last human has stepped foot into the Kingdom of Elenoir and the two of you, are the first humans to be in the capital of this Kingdom, the City of Zestier. However, saving our daughter and taking the trouble to accompany her all the way back to us entitles you with a proper reward…Unfortunately, the teleportation gate linked with the Kingdom of Sapin opens only once every seven years, for the Summit Conference between the three races. Since the last Summit was two years ago, it'll be another five years until the gate will function"

I couldn't stop a sigh of disappointment escape my mouth.

"However, we are more than willing to send a group of guards to escort both of you back home. You are indeed correct that it may not be wise to stay in this kingdom for too long. While some are tolerant, many hold animosity towards humans because of the war long ago." He finishes with a sorrowful smile.

Phew, while not as fast as a teleportation gate it was still something.

"Please make yourselves comfortable for now, we will prepare your escorts by tomorrow morning" he snapped his fingers and an old elf maid came and led us to our room.

Chapter 14: Touring the palace

We were led two adjacent rooms. They were large and elegant, yet held simple furnitures, consisting of a couch, a tea table, a bed and dresser. Each expertly crafted out of wood.

The first thing I did after entering my room was to strip and go take a bath. The bathroom was....peculiar to say the least, it was a waterfall flowing from the ceiling to the floor where it was drained. The ever flowing water however had quite the pleasant temperature, with just enough warmth to relax my body.

After finishing my bath and dressing up in a robe I sat down to inspect my core and find the reason for the frequent pains and the minute decrease in my mana levels. What I found left me with more questions than answers.

A black figure, probably whatever Noctis shot at me before leaving, was curled up at the edge of my core, was this why I was experiencing those agonising pains?, because it was leeching off mana from my core however little it might be.

I have no idea why he would do something that could potentially harm me, unless it would help me in the long run.

I was interrupted from thinking of any other reasons of this developement by a knock at my door.Sighing I went to answer the door.

Arthur stood there with Tessia behind him sniffling, she's probably sad her knight in grimy armor is leaving so soon.

"Want to look around the castle" he asks.

"I think you already know the answer to that" I say with an amused smile.

"Lets go then" he cracks a grin himself.

We walked in silence after that. Upon reaching the courtyard behind the castle I felt a suffocating killing intent and saw a blur heading towards the princess. Almost immediately Arthur moved, but I was faster I used mana to conjure a crude blade on my hand and sliced apart it apart.

That had a lot less resistance than a metal blade should have, upon further inspection I realised it was a rubber toy.

"What the hell? Why are you trying to kill your own granddaughter?" Arthur shouts at Elder Virion, so he was the perpetrator of this incident.

"So the brats brother is also a mage huh? As for trying to kill her I doubt that toy would give little more than a bruise" He chuckles.

"He's right Arthur its made if some kind of rubber. So all this was to see how good of a mage Arthur is?" I say, the second part more to the Elder than Arthur.

"Yes, and if your brother is as good as you I can see how he was able to defeat those slave traders, however your use of mana was mediocre at best, Now to test your brother here" he then threw a wooden sword at him.

"Here I come" after drawing a wooden sword of his own he dashed at Arthur witbout even giving him time to get into a stance.

Arthur reciprocated the action and swung upwards aiming at his fingers.

But before he could hit anything Virion swiftly evaded his strike.

"You're a scary little brat aren't you? Guess I'll be a bit more serious." Virion smirked.

He sped up, insanely at that, I could barely see him even then he was just a blur.

Arthur wasn't much better, he managed to block a third of the strikes coming his way.

After like 10 minutes when Virion went behind him to sweep down his legs Arthur retaliated, he hit his head causing the slightly insane old man to stumble with a bruise in his forehead.

"HAHAHAHA, I deserved that one," He kept rubbing his swollen forehead

Damn right you did

Pinching his side Tessia spoke up, "Grandpa!, You hurt him too much, you should've gone easier on him."

"Owowow, that hurts little one, I'm afraid if I went easier on him, he would be the one bullying me" he spoke gently

"I've decided, Arthur Leywin, Fayden Leywin, become disciples" he spoke in a tone of finality as if he didn't expect us to refuse.

"Are you serious?" Arthur spoke still in disbelief.

"Why can't I be" he tilts his head in response.

"Well for one the two of us are humans, and as Arthur said earlier it isn't appropriate for one human to stay here for long much less two. Also we have to confirm the safety of our family and inform them that we're safe as well" I reply for Arthur.

"No one will bother you as long as you stay under my wing, as for your parents...what if there was a way for you to see how their holding up and contact them to let them know you're okay won't it be enough?"

Whats he getting at?

"I guess it isn't strictly a necessity for us to meet our parents in person. Even though I miss them, the most important thing is finding out how they're doing and letting them know that we're fine as well" Arthur responds this time.

"Then be outside the manor by six in the morning, sharp" he said as he turned to leave.

But before he could Arthur intercepted him, "Wait, I don't understand why you want us as your disciples, and is it not possible for us to go back home, spend some time with our parents and then returning to train under you?"

"I want you to be my disciple because I see a lot of potential inside you and your brother. An infinite number of people have come to me to take them as my disciple, but have I taken any? No, the brats of this generation bore me but you , you're different. You have exceptional talent in mana manipulation and somehow have better techniques than even me, but that's not the main reason of my decision. So I need to ask you, how are you a Beast tamer?" His tone going from amusement so dead serious in an instant.

Chapter 15: Beast Will

"What do you mean Beast Tamer?" Arthur asks with confusion visible on his face.

Yeah, the hells a beast tamer?

"Lets go somewhere else and talk" Virion said as he led us to a living room with couches and a fireplace.

He sat down on a couch before he continued, "Lets start from the beginning shall we? I'm assuming that both of you know that mana beasts possess mana cores, same as humans, elves and dwarves."

We both nodded at this.

"Alright, just as mana beasts, humans, elves and dwarves possess qualities in their mana cores that are distinct to their own race."

He picked up a piece if paper and drew a chart.

 Water - Ice

o Plant

 Earth - Gravity

o Magma, Metal

 Fire - Lightning

 Wind - Sound

"These are the four basic elements and their higher forms. The higher forms—Ice, Metal, Lightning, and Sound—can only be controlled by mages especially adept at a particular basic element, i.e. a deviant. This is where the distinct racial qualities lie..." he wrote each race with and recited a brief description.

Humans

"Human mages possess the ability to manipulate all four basic elements and are the only race capable of having deviants that can control the higher form of their adept element. They also have deviants that can even transcend the four basic elements, like healers (emitters), making their mana cores the most diverse."

Elves

"Elven mages can only manipulate water, wind, and earth, but with much higher affinity. We also have a special trait distinct to our race that allows very pure-blooded mages to control plants. However, elves don't have deviants that can manipulate water, wind, and earth into their higher forms"

Dwarves

"Dwarven mages can only manipulate earth and fire but, like elves, they possess a much higher affinity to those two elements. Their distinct trait lies in the fact that all dwarves are able to mold and bend metal, while some deviants possess the special ability to manipulate both earth and fire into magma, something even human deviants are not able to do, much less elves. However, they can only manipulate those two basic elements and, like elves, do not possess the ability to control the higher form of the basic elements."

"Wait, wait, wait, if that is the case then why can't human mages manipulate plant or magma?" Arthur asked while reading the chart.

Exactly, if humans have affinity for all four elements why can't they manipulate plant or magma?

"Good question. Only elves can manipulate plant, the only form of nature that is alive, because of our lineage being highly affinitive to the nurturing elements. And only the Dwarf race can manipulate magma and metal because, like us elves, their lineage makes them highly adept to the constructing elements."

I see.

"Okay. I get it now, but what does that have to do with me apparently being a beast tamer? What is a beast tamer anyways."

"I'm getting to it!" Virion barked out.

"Mana beasts are different from the three humanoid races because each species has their own special characteristics. Listing all of them would be endless so I'll give you a simple example. Mages, adventurers or not, are classified: E, D, C, B, A, AA, S, SS class. This classification is the same for mana beasts as well. Take the sonic hawk. They are B Class beasts that possess incredible speed while in flight. They all have to affinity for wind and sound. These attributes are innate in their mana cores. Regardless of their affinity, if these mana cores are taken out and given to a human or elf mage that specialize in the wind element, their training will go by much faster than just cultivating mana from their surroundings, but that's it"

He stopped his explanation as he drunk a glass of water.

"...However! When a mana beast reaches A class or higher, they have the ability to pass on their 'will', or ability to be more precise, to one person. I called you a beast tamer earlier because you have a mana beast's will in your mana core and from my estimation, not just any will but an S class mana beast's will, if not an SS class will. I'm only able to sense this because I'm a beast tamer as well, although the beast's will that I tamed was an AA class beast, the Shadow Panther. And yes I could only bully you that badly due to my Shadow Panther's will, even then that was only 50% of my speed" he adds the last part with a wink.

That was only half of his speed?

How fast can he go?

Anyways so that's what Noctis did, he passed his beast will to me. He did say I would need it survive something that's going to happen.

"Judging by the look on your face its safe to assume you have a beast will as well don't you?" He asked seeing my enlightened expression.

I gave him a nod in response.

He came towards me and extended his arm, "May I?"

"Sure"

He put his palm on my sternum, right above my mana core, just to pull it away almost instantly. He was sweating bullets now.

"That's a very dark beast will, even with my Shadow Panther's will protecting me I almost went insane"

"Um, I'm sorry?" as if you weren't insane already.

"Don't be, but I can't help but wonder what exactly gave you that will. You can chose not to answer if you want in case it brings up any bad memories" he replies.

"No, no, its okay. But I still can't answer your question because I don't know

what kind of mana beast he is myself, all I know is that he's a massive 20 foot tall wolf with red eyes and jet black fur which seemed to turn to smoke when he gave me his will." I answer him with a shrug.

"I see, could it be? No its just a myth anyways, it seems like he was a Shadow Wolf. Thats good for you, I can train you better than Arthur. But its urgent for me to guide you, you two don't have much time." He replies in a stern voice.

"What do you mean?" Arthur sniffled, seems like he has some bad memories about that. We'll compare notes later.

"The power from your mana cores is too strong for your immature bodies to handle. Let me ask you this. Have any of you recently felt a burning pain coming from your mana core?"

What the- is this something every beast tamer experiences?

He must have read our face cause he continued, "If you don't learn to control your new mana cores it will destroy your bodies."

Wait, WHAT?

Chapter 16: Confrontations

"I see, so we have no other choice than to become your disciples. But neither of us can rest easy without making sure that our family is safe and letting them know that we are too. You mentioned something about that didn't you?" I say to him.

"Hahaha, just call me grandpa from now on, both of you. After all you are my first disciples, and who know maybe one of you may become my grandson-in-law." He shot us a wink.

I dunno about that gramps, Tessia's not exactly my type.

He chuckles before continuing," We'll go see an old friend of mine tommorow that will let you communicate with your parents. I need your total focus now. I have no idea how long it will take for you to master the basics of your beast's will. I have never seen such young mages, beast tamers at that, neither have I seen such dark and ominous will. You two are going to change the world drastically, I know it."

I couldn't help but blush in embarrassment.

"Go to sleep now. Its going to be a long day tomorrow, you'll need all the rest you can get."

Arthur got up and bowed to him, "Goodnight.....Grandpa"

"Night, Gramps" I say before following Arthur, not before catching an amused smile on his face.

The next morning I woke up to the voices of Tessia and Arthur talking with each other.

Leaving them to themselves I got ready.

I got out of my room and went to Arthur's and knocked. A few moments later he opened the door.

Upon seeing me he was going to ask something but I cut him off. "I think we need to talk about what happened to both of us before we reunited. We will need to make up something on that and also make a believable reason as to why we're staying. I don't think either of us want Mom and Dad to know what exactly happened and that we are beast tamers now."

He agreed with a nod and let me in.

"So lets begin with you, how did you survive?" I continued.

"I was saved by Sylvia, a dragon. She guided me to her cave and provided me shelter and food for almost 4 months. She opened a rift to the forests of Elshire at the cost of her own life... before she died she gave me her will and this stone" he explained with a sad face and brought out a rainbow colored stone.

"Wait, I don't understand why she would die by opening a rift" I ask confused. If Sylvia was strong enough to trap Noctis, making a rift shouldn't harm her.

"She... had a bad wound and making the rift escalated her death" he sniffles.

Seems like he was quite attached to her.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have asked about it so soon." I apologize to him genuinely sorry.

"Its okay, you couldn't have known. So after that I came across those slave traders and saved Tess. What about you, how did you survive? Grandpa said something about a Shadow Wolf" He waved off my apology

"Yes, Noctis saved me while I was still unconscious and carried me to his place, he was a prisoner there due to the barrier Sylvia made. When he saw her take you he deduced she would make a rift to send you back which would weaken the barrier enough for him to escape with me. So in the end he kinda hijacked your rift to escape to the forest. He also implied that something bad is going to happen before entrusting me with his beast will and shot a mass of shadow at me, which has been eating up a small amount my mana for a while now" I explained to him how I survived.

"What? Have you tried removing it, whatever it is?"

"No, I trust him, and I'm sure whatever he did was to help me some way" I respond, calming him somewhat.

"Come on, I think we've kept Gramps waiting long enough." I turned back to leave.

Making my way down the stairs I notice Gramps and Tessia in a small carriage.

"Father its not appropriate for humans to stay in this kingdom!"

"Alduin is right Elder Virion. I will always grateful to them for saving Tessia but having them stay here goes against all traditions."

The King and the Queen were arguing with Grandpa Virion who was leaning back.

"Screw the tradition, I have taken a liking to that brat same as Tessia, haven't you?"

"I-It's not like that grandpa. He's just..." she trailed off her face glowing crimson.

"Haha. As for the brats brother, he possesses immense darkness in him, something that would've made me go insane had I not used my beast will. He could very well be his successor. From what I've seen he seems to be a good kid, I don't want him to be consumed by the dark. Anyways they're going to be under my wing so make it known they're not to be trifled with."

Is it really that dangerous?

"F-father-"

"ENOUGH! This is not up for discussion. Ah you're here, come we should hurry up" His expression turned from stern to a smile.

I hmm'd in acceptance and entered the carriage, all the while ignoring the frowns on the faces of the King and Queen.

Halfway through the journey Arthur spoke,"Hey gramps where are we heading anyways? You said we will be meeting a friend of yours who can help us communicate with our parents?"

"Hah! Gramps eh? Aren't you awfully comfortable with me now. Good. As for our destination, its a surprise. He responds with a wink.

Tessia had fallen asleep on my brothers shoulder by now.

"Take good care of her Art, she grew up in a very lonely environment" he said with a surprising amount of compassion.

I decided to tune out their conversation seeing as it was mainly concerning Arthur and Tessia.

"...has shown more emotions, more smiles and laughs around you than she has shown the rest of her life growing up. She now finally seems more like a child, and for that I thank you." They finished their conversation as the carriage came to a stop.

We're here.

"We're here Tess" Arthur nudged Tessia awake.

We disembarked the carriage to see a dainty hut.

Grandpa Virion suddenly went ahead and kicked the door,"We're here you old witch, come out"

The door snapped open to show an elderly woman with gray hair seemingly struck by lightning and wrinkled eyes, which were weirdly enough a combination of multiple colors, wearing a single brown robe inspecting us.

"Took you long enough" she scowled.

"Hahaha! Arthur! Fayden! Let me introduce you to Rinia Darcassan, a very special deviant amongst us elves," gramps announced.

"A pleasure to meet you" Arthur said with a bow. I just nodded behind him.

"Come in, we haven't got all day" she said before letting us in.

Chapter 17: Communication

The five of us were seated around a circular table containing a jar of water in the center.

Arthur was the first to speak, "Um, Elder Rinia? You said that you were a diviner? I don't understand what you can do. Gramps said we will be able to contact our parents by visiting you."

"Gramps huh? You must have a soft spot for the boy to call you that." She said while snickering.

"Both of them actually, anyways if any other brat dares call me gramps I'll hang upside down and beat them up with a cactus." He grinned.

Oddly descriptive of you.

"Brat I'm what is called a deviant. Deviant magic is different for different mages, I am quite capable, for instance I know that you are special, both of you, there are portions of you life that even I can't see, and your fate is hidden from me. I cant see anything even if I wish. Beware boy, you're fate is shrouded in the deepest darkness." She said, the last part directed to me.

What is it with me and darkness? First Gramps says that my beast will is dark as fuck and now the clairvoyant says my fate is as well?

What do they take me for, an emo?

Before I could voice my complaint Elder Rinia continued speaking, "Enough about that, Arthur, Fayden you've come to me to contact your parents, so I'll help you in that. Close your eyes, picture your parents. Focus on their appearance and mana signatures. I'll handle the rest."

And thats what I did. I focused on the last image of my parents, my father wounded and requesting us to protect Mom and our sibling, my mother healing my father and hesitating to leave him alone.

"Alright, you can open your eyes now"

I look at the jar of water which was swirling around before showing my parents sitting around a dining table.

Arthur bolted towards the table no doubt eager to talk with them. I can relate as I was in the same position myself.

They were not in Ashber that much was certain. Mom was paler than before and had lost some weight, although the bulge of her stomach was evidence of her pregnancy. Dad though didn't change much, he sported a beard now and was wearing some form of uniform.

Tears were streaming down my face now, I didn't even bother wiping them knowing that they'd be replenished soon anyways.

They were alive and well and thats all that mattered. Although Noctis had told me they were fine, this confirmed it.

"Th-thank you Elder Rinia for showing me this" Arthur stuttered out.

"Ye-yes, thank you very much" of course I wasn't much better.

Elder Rinia seemed to be a tad bit uncomfortable by our sincerity and waved it off in the end.

"Ahem! Show me where they are now"

The vision zoomed out and as I suspected they were not in Ashber but Xyrus.

"It seems they've reached Xyrus, that makes things easier for us."

"Art's parents...." Tessia whispered while patting Arthur's back.

A clap from Grandpa Virion gathered our attention," Okay! Arthur! Fayden! Let your parents know that you're both alive!"

And so I began, " Hi Mom, Dad its me Fayden your son, Arthur is with me. Yeah.....we're alive, we managed to survive, barely, due to a mixture of luck and an unconscious use of mana..."

"This should be kept confidential, but we're currently in the kingdom of the elves. I know it must have been hard for you because I know it has been hard for us. Im glad you're both okay, and I hope you don't blame yourselves for what happened. I know that if I had the chance I would do it again and I believe that Fayden would as well." Arthur continued from where I left off.

"But we cannot return back right now, no matter how much we wish we could. It seems that the early awakening of our mana cores led them to become unstable. Thankfully we found someone willing to cure us but it may even take years. But don't worry, even if it takes years we will keep in contact with you. Remember to keep our location a secret, better yet let people think we are dead. We love you guys so very much, and we miss you, stay safe. Dad, keep Mom and our baby sibling safe, and Mom keep Dad away from trouble will you?" I continue with tears still streaming down my face.

The glow faded and Elder Rinia collapsed into her chair, pale and sweating.

I proceeded to wipe my tears.

"I'm ready" Arthur spoke.

"What about you brat?" Virion asks me after nodding towards Arthur.

"Ready as I'll ever be" I said while gathering all the determination I had.

We reached the palace by nightfall. A maid greeted us, but before we could go to our rooms the King came to us.

"Arthur, Fayden, I know you overheard us while we were talking before and I apologize for that. My years of being a king had made me old-fashioned and unreasonably stubborn on you two not belonging here."

The Queen continued from that, holding our hand in hers.

"You and your brother are now Elder Virion's first disciples and that alone gives us enough reason to accept you. Even then you two did save our daughter. So please consider the palace your home. I know you miss your parents immensely but if I can be of any consolation do not hesitate to treat me as you would your mother." She gave us a genuine smile.

"Well it was Arthur who saved your daughter not me." I said with a sheepish smile on my face.

"Mama! Papa!....." The princess ran up to parents and proceeded to hug them.

They were good people simply looking out for their kingdom.

"Alright Brats! Training time starts tomorow so sleep early." Gramps exclaims from behind us.

Chapter 18: Training

The next day I awoke to a scream coming from the room beside mine.

Isn't that Arthur's room?

Shit!

I scrambled awake and barged in the room, only to find Gramps holding his hand on Arthur's sternum.

"What happened?" I ask them.

"His mana core acted up again" Gramps responds, "Lets start the training, even if it is a bit early."

"Sure" I shrugged at him, before following him to the courtyard, Arthur trailing behind me.

Gramps sat down in lotus position before taking a long look at us.

"Up until the both of you have been purifying your cores and using mana manipulation using your mana channels. While this method may be enough for normal mages, it is not enough for beast tamers. Beats tamers use a different method called assimilation."

...what?

He must've read my expression, or Arthur's who looked just as confused.

"Hahaha, you'll know soon enough. Assimilation is essentially integrating mana from your mama core to your bodies muscles and bones, thus the name assimilation, and once your body absorbs the mana from your new core you will be able to use whatever beast will you have. The only drawback to this is that your mana core won't develop during this process."

Eh, that's a small price to pay.

"Slowly release the mana from your core into your body and let your bones and muscles absorb it. This will take a lot of time and effort but as the process continues your mana core will get more accommodated to your body. There isn't much I can do for you two right now other than making sure that the mana is distributed evenly throughout your body and relieving you when your mana cores act up."

So we continued for days, this seems like it will take a lot of time. Like seriously this is much harder than forming a mana core. Not only is the mana moving in a completely different direction but I'll also have to infuse it directly to my bones and muscles.

Arthur decided not to leave the castle since either of our cores can act up anytime and I had to agree, going outside at this condition would only be harmful.

Gramps was a godsend, helping us relieve the pain whenever any of us spasms. Several weeks passed and the pains from my core became less frequent, in this time I got to know the princess more, turns out I now have to call her Tess. Either way I'll still call her princess just to annoy her.

The next day we went touring the city of Zestier. Tessia wore a white sleeveless sundress with a similarly colored cardigan, along with a pink hat on her head which decorated with a flower. Arthur wore the same outfit he wore the previous day while I wore a Black coat over a blue shirt and black pants.

The city didn't seem as mesmerizing as when I first saw it, I guess being in the palace for so long made me a used to all this.

As we were touring around the city an elven child bumped into Art, even though he steered out of his way.

"Well if it aren't the human brats that Elder Virion took under. Gross I've got human germs now" he says snidely while making a disgusted face.

Is this guy for real?

He then turned to Tessia with a smile and outstretched hand, "Allow me to escort you around princess, these human brats are under you."

"Let's go, Art, Fay, there's bug in that direction and I don't want to soil my shoes by accidentally stepping on it." She retorted coldly.

Since when did I give her permission to call me 'Fay'? Oh well I guess its only fair she gets to call me that since I now have to call her 'Tess'.

As we turned to leave we were interrupted again.

"Hold it brat I'm not done with you!" He shouted and proceeded to grab Arthur's shoulder.

"I heard you are pretty talented human mages. I am a genius myself and am already at the red stage. I can manipulate water and soon plants as well."

Kid, we're quadra elemental mages with very strong beast wills.

Arthur spoke up, his voice dripping with sarcasm," Oh my word, princess Tessia we're in the presence of a true genius here, I'm not worthy."

I snickered at this.

"I'll be sure to give you proper respect, Lord Genius of the Elves. So if you'll excuse us..." Arthur trailed off

As we were leaving a handkerchief flew past us and fell to the ground.

Looking back I see the elves face red with anger glaring at Arthur.

"How dare you initiate a duel with a disciple of Elder Virion! You may be of noble blood, Feyrith, but you should still know your place! Take it back" Tessia ordered with a glare.

"My apologies princess, but my father has taught me never to let my pride be stomped upon. So what will you do Arthur, accept the duel or retreat like a coward, know this your choice will reflect upon your mentor as well." The idiot said while drawing a wand.

"You want me to take care of this Art?" I whisper to my brother.

"No, I'll take care of this myself." He responds back.

"Alright."

We had attracted quite the crowd by now.

"Princess, please do us the honor of initiating the duel." He seems quite eager to get his ass whooped.

Tessia simply rolled her eyes and announced, "Let the duel, begin."

And so it began.

Arthur dashed towards him and took him out in one hit.

He probably shouldn't have done that judging by the looks we received from the audience.

Later Tess explained that duels contained some rules, one was that the challenger always made the first move, and the other was that it is supposed to be a demonstration of magic.

Once Virion found out whaf happened he laughed quite a bit saying that the duels were foolish and an inaccurate way to measure someone's magic.

We rarely went out after that, choosing to stay in the palace. But we did manage to send messages to Mom and Dad to let them know we were alive and missed them a lot.

And so, 3 years passed by.

Chapter 19: Assimilating

These last 3 years have been spent on completing our assimilation, and I could feel that I was close to finishing. Today we take the final step to becoming a fully fledged beast tamer.

Aa I got ready to head out I heard Art scream.

So they're at it again?

Seriously find a different way to wake him up will ya? I wake up to his screams almost everyday. He's become like an alarm clock for me.

Sigh.

I head to the courtyard not wanting to hear their bickering.

"Morning" I greet Grandpa Virion as I reach the courtyard.

"Morning brat"

Arthur arrived a few minutes later.

"You're finally awake eh? How did your wife wake you up today? Haha!" Grandpa said to Art while sipping his tea.

"Wife? I didn't know you could marry demons. You've turned her into a monster Gramps." Came his sarcastic reply.

"Now come on Art don't insult the demons." That earned me an augmented pinch on my forearm.

"OwOwOw! Sorry princess." that just led her to pinch me harder.

"Tess, I mean Tess. Calm down it was only a joke!"

Damn that hurt more than I expected.

Looking to the side I see Arthur and gramps amused at my suffering.

Traitor.

"Haha! Are you ready, Art, Fay, today is the day you finally become beast tamers.

"Hell yeah!" I exclaim while Art just nods at him.

"Do you two remember the basic phases of beast tamers?"

Me and Art nod at each other before speaking.

"All beast tamers have a number of phases they can use depending on the strength of the beast whose will they possess." Art spoke first.

"The first phase is 'Acquire', in which the tamer can use a small portion of the beast. The second phase, 'Integrate' where the tamers body is completely infused with the beast will giving them much more control over the beasts abilities. This also leads to changes in physical appearance." I complete the explanation.

"Absolutely correct! The phases a beast tamer can use shows their mastery over their beast's will. The stronger the beast will, the harder it is to gain mastery over it. Only if the tamer gets insight can he advance past the first phase. However the Integrate phase is not necessarily stronger than the Acquire phase. In the acquire phase you tap into a specific ability of the beast while in the Integrate phase one gets a all-encompassing power-up by using their beast will." He explained, his face dead serious.

"What I didn't tell you earlier was how a beast's will is acquired. If a beast is killes with its core still intact with it's will, a mage can absorb it and gain insight. Such type of beast tamers are considered forged tamers. While this is an easier way to gain a beast will the chances of gaining insight is extremely rare and limited. This is one of the reasons it took me so long to achieve the Integrate phase is because I'm a forged tamer myself. But you Arthur , you and Fayden are extremely rare legacy trainers, where the beast willingly imparts its will to you."

"My first phase doesn't really do much, I become a bit faster and am able to erase a bit of my presence and blend into shadows. Neither of you have seen my 2nd phase right? So watch carefully what took me over 10 years to achieve."

As he said that a powerful surge of mana surrounded his body before being absorbed again.

His skin turned black with his sclera turning black and irises glowing yellow. He also formed two ear like projections on his head. His hair came untied and shone a black hue. Art shuddered and stepped back.

"This is my integrate phase. Now I'm going to sneak up behind you. Pay attention."

Really? Hes gonna sneak up on us after telling us. I almost facepalmed.

Glad I didn't.

Because holy shit! He completely vanished. I couldn't sense him at all, and when I turned behind his clawed finger was already at my jugular, ready to slit my throat open any second.

He was fast, extremely so. What was scarier was that I couldn't sense him at all. Seems like I have a long way to go before I become strong enough to keep my family safe. Atleast I'll have Arthur's help.

He deactivated his integrate phase, his face flushed from exhaustion.

Huh, so he has a short time limit.

I heard clapping from behind and saw Tessia clapping for Virion.

This is not some show Tess.

"Phew! It always takes a lot from me using that phase. Even after decades I'm only able to maintain it for a bit less than an hour. Unlike my Acquire phase where I channel a small portion of my beast will and borrow the speed and stealth of the Shadow Panther, the Integrate phase enhances my senses as well."

"I see." I mumble to myself.

"Good. Let us get on with the ceremony." He said while clasping his hands.

We stood an arms length apart, both facing Gramps. While Tess leaned forward in anticipation.

"Just let your mana come out freely and don't try to control it. It is crucial you stay in a relaxed state of mind so I'll restrain you if necessary."

We both nod in agreement. He then inserted mana into my core, flooding it with both of our mana.

It felt as if the temperature dropped a couple of degrees, my body felt like it would freeze, but that wasn't all. Along with the unexpected cold came emotions, negative ones. I felt anger, immense and uncontrollable anger compelling me to lash out and kill anyone in front of me, I felt the need to spill blood. I knew what it was, I've experienced it one too many times in my old life.

Bloodlust.

Thankfully the mental barriers I formed in my old life stayed intact when I was reincarnated, so I was able to control it.

As soon as I did shadows exploded from me, consuming all the light from our surroundings. When I opened my eyes I was left confused. Its midnight already? How long did was I like that?

But upon closer inspection it became clear that it was not natural. Not a single star was visible in the onyx black sky, and neither was there a moon. The only source of light was a miniature sun beside me.

The light and shadows seemed to be fighting for dominance. The light kept destroying the shadows while the darkness kept consuming the light. This led to a stalemate and eventually both the light and the darkness seeped back into our bodies.

Tessia was looking at us in awe while Gramps had an expression of shock.

"I have to admit, I didn't expect something like that. I know you have a good reason for not telling me what kind of beast gave you its will but I'll ask one last time. What sort of beast did give you its will?"

"....using her own words it was what we call a dragon that passed me her will." Arthur decided to tell him.

His face was frozen in a strickened expression and he started mumbling to himself. The only words I could catch were 'impossible', 'Dragon', 'prophecy' and 'never happened'.

"D-ragon...." he wheezed out.

"Dear lord..... a Dragon Tamer. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would witness the birth of a Dragon Tamer, much less the prophesied hero, and I was the one who tamed them Haha!"

Has this old man finally gone insane?

Tessia just looked at her grandfather confused.

He abruptly grabbed Art's shoulder and spoke, "You were right in keeping this a secret. Don't tell anyone about this. This needs to stay hidden until you are strong enough to protect yourself and people around you."

He then turned to me, "And that includes you brat. The shadow wolf-"

"Noctis, his name is Noctis." I interrupted him.

"Right, this Noctis was not a simple shadow wolf, from that display I can say with certainty that he was akin to being a God. I don't know how strong Dragon Tamers are supposed to be but the dragon which passed her will to you must be a God as well. So keep quiet in this, nobody can know about this untill you're both string enough. Although this means I won't be able to train you since your beast will's power far exceeds mine. But I do have a gift for you left behind by a similar God long ago."

Gods exist in this world?

This just got a whole lot complicated.

Chapter 20: Weapons and a bond

"Wait a second, Gods exist!?" I ask incredulously.

"I cannot answer that because I don't know that myself. I refer to him as a God because for a time we worshipped him. He fits the exact description of Noctis only that he had blue eyes not red. There are myths about him but we stopped worshipping him a long time ago when he disappeared without a trace." He answers looking a bit panicked, as if he said something he shouldn't have.

"But I doubt you will be interested enough in those myths when you can go home sooner than expected." He continued.

Wait, really?

Arthur voiced out my thoughts, "Really Gramps? We can return home soon."

"Haha! Yes, the teleportation gate that was supposed to open in 2 years will be opened early due to the tournament taking place in the city of Xyrus in 4 months. This tournament will be a very important event for the future because both the dwarves and elves are sending youths as representatives for both the tournament and as preliminary students to your human academy. During all this we can sneak you two back into Sapin without anyone noticing." Gramps said with a smile on his face.

Aw hell yeah! We're finally going home and see our parents again.

"You're going to be leaving so soon, Art, Fay?" Tessia finally spoke up with a crestfallen expression.

"Relax princess, we will probably meet each other soon." I tried to reassure her.

"Yeah, we have to meet our family again. Maybe you can visit us in Sapin." He tried to cheer her up as well.

"We still have four months left you two. I expect you brats to train harder than ever. Your mana cores haven't developed at all in these past years, thanks to your assimilation. Remember your beast will is a trump card only to be used in emergencies." He warned us.

"Now go and take a bath. You stink, both of you. Lets leave them alone to recuperate little one." He continued on.

Tessia looked a bit depressed about the news of our soon departure. Living with her for 3 years created a bond akin to those of siblings. On top of that she reminded me a lot of my sister before...

Anyways Arthur seemed to notice it too as he gave her a hug and said, "Tess! Cheer up, kay? I'll still be there for four more months. Even then I wont be gone permanently. I hope you can someday meet our parents."

"Arthur's right Tess, there's nothing stopping you from coming and visiting us in Xyrus. Who knows maybe we will even go to the same school?" I say while patting her head.

Our actions seemed to fluster her since she pushed us and ran away. I could see the steam coming out of her ears.

"Haha! Youth. Sleep well brats." Gramps chuckled and went away.

We followed soon after going to our respective room.

But as soon as I got in and closed the door immense pain from my mana core assaulted me yet again.

What the hell? Wasn't my assimilation over? Why is it still paining?

As if to answer my question a black mass shot out from my chest and the pain died down immediately.

Was that the reason for the pain?

Wait a minute. I checked my mana core and sure enough the mass that had been eating my mana for over 3 years was gone.

After settling down I told Zeke to go back in my shadow and began training.

Arthur and I spoke at the same time.

"Good, lets fight then." Virion sad with a smirk on his face.

Days passed and I kept trying to master the first phase of my beast will. Gramps also taught us to conceal our beast wills from other mages.

Zeke didn't grow much physically in these four months, although he did grow a lot mentally.

Tess managed to make us spend all our free time with us, trying to make as many memories as possible, and four months passed in a blink.

On the day before out departure Gramps pulled me aside.

"You remember the gifts I said were left behind by a wolf god?" He asked me.

"Yes, what about them." I reply.

"Well, I think its time you claim them."

Alright! Time to see what this gift is.

Gramps took me to a carriage saying the place is far on foot and so we need to go by carriage, and so we did.

Hours later we arrived at what seemed to be a ruined palace.

"That is the old location of the Royal palace. It was destroyed in the war." Gramps answered my unasked question.

"I see."

"Come on brat we haven't got all day." he ushered me forward.

He guided me to the ruined courtyard of the palace and stopped in front of a pillar. Then he pushed the pillar away as if it was nothing. The removal of the pillar revealed a trapdoor. He proceeded to infuse some mana, plant type probably seeing the color of the mana. The trapdoor immediately opened.

And so we began or descent. the stairs extended quite deep, but it didn't take us long reaching the end due to the steepness of the stairs.

I was hoping for something grand but all that existed beyond the stairs were two crossed swords stabbed into a pedestal.

They were fairly long, with the cross guard tapering upwards and a greyish silver body.

It also had a wolf insignia on it's pommel.

Exactly what I'm used to, dual wielding.

"Go ahead brat!" Gramps pushes me ahead.

I went towards the two swords and pulled them out one by one. It was heavy for my childish body. I guess I won't be able to use it till I'm older.

As I was examining it something pricked my palm from both of the handles and drew blood. Instantly the blades became much lighter.

I swung it around to test its strength and hit the pedestal, the swords went right through the rocks and broke it to four pieces.

Damn that's sharp.

"Why me?" I ask.

"Huh? What do you mean?" Gramps replied.

"Why did you give them to me, why not someone else like the King?" I elaborate.

"To be honest no one has been able to pull it out and those who tried got sent to the medical wards for weeks." He said with a sheepish smile.

....this senile old man almost sent me to the medics?

Sigh.

Well it did give me a powerful weapon in the end so its alright I guess.

"Alright time to go back." He exclaimed gesturing towards the exit

"Okay. Do they have a scabbard?" Before he could reply the swords shrunk down and transformed to rings.

"What about their names?" I say. No change occurred this time.

"They have no name." He replied.

"Solaris and Shroud" I whisper.

Almost immediately the names get engraved on the rings.

"Lets go."

The next day I came down dressed in a blue robe and black pants.

"Remember to take care you two! We will find a way to contact you. Here take these, they will help you navigate the forests if you ever venture here again." Gramps said while handling us a silver oval compass.

"Or you could always find another princess to lead you here" he continued passing a wink towards Arthur.

Thus earned him a pinch from Tessia.

"Ouch! It was just a joke little one."

"Alduin and Merial will be going in a different carriage being the leaders of this kingdom. The two of us won't be going. We won't see each other for a long time. Until then." He grabbed the two of us in a hug.

"I will miss you Art, visit sometimes okay, and don't chase after human girls, promise me." Tessia said to Arthur sniffling tears.

My brother proceeded to hug her and say, "We will see each other again I know it, you better grow stronger than me in this time, you have no excuse since gramps is teaching you."

He released the hug and waited for me to finish my farewell a few feet away.

"I'll miss you too, Fay. You will visit as well, right?" She said still sniffling.

"Yeah I'll visit you and bring Arthur with me as well. Until then stay safe sis." I say while patting her head.

Only after her eyes widened did I realize what I had said.

Shit.

"Sorry about that, just slipped out-" I try to apologize.

"No, no its okay. I don't mind, you are like a little brother to me after all." She interrupts my apology.

Phew. Calamity avoided.

"Yeah, well see you then" I say and turn around to leave.

I look at Art's surprised face amused.

"What was that about." He asked me as we were walking away.

"She did remind me about my sister in my previous life, so I guess it just slipped out." I whisper back to him.

He nods in understanding and we go inside the carriage.

"Well, look who it is. Were you finally kicked out of the kingdom." Said an awfully familiar boy dressed in a decorated purple robe.

You've gotta be kidding me. Seriously? This dumbass?

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Arthur said with the dragon, Sylvie I think her name was, growling from his head.

"I'm the noble you mercilessly assaulted while defying the customs of the duel." He angrily stood up and pointed towards Arthur accusingly.

"Ah you're that bug I pummeled!" He yelled out.

I facepalmed from behind.

"How dare you...?" The nobles face turned bright red in embarrassment as his ears twitched. The elves behind him snickered.

"Ah! Sorry, I didn't mean to say that, I never did get your name though." He tried to apologize and extended his hand.

Which the kid rejected and spoke pompously, " I am Feyrith Ivysaar III, the descendant of the noble Ivysaar family. You may have won before but if we were to duel again I would win without a doubt!"

No, I don't think you will.

An elf girl a few years older than us spoke before I had the chance to vocalize my thoughts, " You can just call him Feyfey like we do."

"D-don't tell them that." Feyrith said, his face turning to an even darker shade kf red.

"Can't do that sorry, it would cause some confusions for him." I spoke up.

"Why?" The elf girl asked.

"My name is Fayden Leywin, Arthur's twin brother and my family calls me Fay so if he were to call him Feyfey he could mix our names." I explain.

"Oh."

"Don't worry I plan on calling him Ivysaur." Arthur whispered to me and I snickered.

Soon after out carriage passed through the teleportation gate and we were welcomed by the familiar feeling of teleportation.

"We have reached Xyrus." The driver announced.

Looking out I say we were surrounded by a parade of people clapping at our entrance. This tournament is supposed to be an extremely important event so the number of people doesn't surprise me.

After navigating the crowd the driver stopped in a small gap between two buildings and signaled me to leave.

And so I did, bidding my farewells to the elves and got out.

After an hour of roaming around searching for the manor our parents were living in we found it.

You ready little guy? We're finally going to be home.

Home? Weren't we home all this time?

Zeke answered me confused.

No we were simply staying there till we completed our assimilation with our beast wills.

I see.

While talking to Zeke I failed to notice Arthur doing the same with Sylvie.

"You nervous?" I ask him as we made our way to the door.

"Absolutely." he replied.

"Same here." I say back.

Reaching the door I took a deep breath before knocking at the door simultaneously to Arthur.
