The cool evening breeze whispered through the window, carrying with it the soft rustle of leaves and the distant hum of life outside. Chen Ru, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Chen, sat comfortably in the armchair of his bedroom. He glanced at himself in the mirror, adjusting the collar of his shirt with practiced precision.
Yes, he thought. I look good.
Still fixing the crease on his outfit, a sudden knock echoed from the door. The smile on his lips faded, replaced by a blank, slightly irritated expression.
"Who is it?" he asked flatly.
A familiar voice responded sweetly from the other side. "My dear..."
Before the voice could continue, Ru cut in sharply. "Mom, it's still a no. I'm not marrying that cold, workaholic robot."
The door creaked open abruptly. His mother entered with a strained smile. Ru sighed and turned his gaze toward her.
"Ma, it's not possible. I want to focus on business. I don't want to get married," he said, voice firm.
Mrs. Chen sighed in frustration, folding her arms. "But son, this marriage is for the growth of the business. There'll be more opportunities, more funding..."
Ru's brows furrowed, irritation bubbling beneath the surface. Yes, he was Chen Ru—the powerful, untouchable heir of the Chen family. One of Korea's most eligible bachelors. People could talk, they could hope—but when he said no, it stayed no.
And while it was true that he liked men, he didn't like robots—especially cold-hearted ones like Ryu Leam.
He was about to respond when a second knock came.
"Young Master, Chairman Ryu is outside. He's waiting for you," a voice called respectfully from the hallway.
Mrs. Chen gave him a pitiful look, as if she would burst into tears if he said no again. Ru groaned dramatically, picked up his wristwatch, and walked past her without another word.
Mrs. Chen grinned happily once he left. "Mission one, accomplished," she whispered to herself.
Chen Ru stepped out of the house with grace, his every move confident and elegant. A sleek black car waited at the curb, its polished surface reflecting the golden hues of sunset. His heart thudded—not out of excitement, but from memories. It had been a long time since he'd last seen Ryu Leam.
Their childhood memories were still vivid: promises whispered in secret, laughter in hidden corners, dreams spoken under moonlight.
The car door opened. Inside sat a tall figure in a tailored black suit. Ru stepped in casually, but before he could settle, a cold voice spoke.
"What do you think you're doing? Get in the other car."
Ru rolled his eyes and snorted, ignoring the command. "Still acting like a baby," he muttered under his breath.
Ryu's face darkened. "What did you just say? Who was the crybaby first, you or me?"
Chen Ru chuckled. "So you still remember our childhood, huh? Then do you remember your promises?"
---
Once upon a time, baby Ryu had been full of words and dreams. Before Ru left to study abroad, Ryu had announced to the world with a childish grin:
"My prince charming must find his princess when he comes back!"
Ru mimicked those old words with a teasing tone, watching as Ryu's expression stiffened.
For a moment, something flickered in Ryu's eyes—something like pain, like regret.
"Then who broke that promise?" he blurted out suddenly, voice lower now. "Me… or you?"
Silence fell over the car like a heavy curtain.
That was when Ru realized—this wasn't baby Ryu anymore.
The man beside him now was Ryu Leam, the cold, distant CEO of GD Corporation.
---
The car came to a halt in front of Dark Knight Restaurant. The guards swiftly opened the doors, and the soon-to-be couple stepped out.
Ru kept his composure, silently hoping dinner would ease the awkwardness between them. They walked inside, and the manager rushed forward with a bow.
"Boss Ryu, the private dining room is ready. Please follow me."
They were led into an elegantly lit room. Ru sat down with a sigh, trying to calm the strange tightness in his chest. Ryu took the seat opposite him, his face unreadable.
Without a word, he raised a hand, and an assistant entered, placing a folder in Ryu's hand. He handed it to Ru.
"Read it carefully," Ryu said coolly. "If you agree to the terms, then it's settled—we're getting married."
Ru's blood boiled.
"Wait... Aren't we here for a dinner date? Why all this—files and formality?"
