I stared at him, the question hanging in the air between us like something toxic.
"Me or Lucian?"
The shock hit first, then quickly transformed into something else. Annoyance. No. Pure anger.
"Are you serious right now?" My voice came out higher than intended, crackling with disbelief. "Are you actually serious?"
Elias blinked, clearly not expecting that reaction.
"I'm literally about to lose my life, Elias! In less than two hours, an entire pack is going to hunt me down like some rabid animal, and you're asking me to choose between you and Lucian?" I pushed away from the tree, needing space, needing air. "What is wrong with you?"
I watched his face change as realization dawned, the way his eyes widened, then filled with something that looked like horror at his own stupidity.
"Maeve, I—" He ran a hand through his hair, that familiar gesture when he'd messed up badly. "I'm so sorry. That was—God, that was selfish and stupid and—"
