Midnight.
Lex picked up a piece of bread and chewed on it.
"But I'm still curious." Lex tapped the table lightly, his face a mask of thought. "Why did the Wayne Group suddenly sign for that land?"
Like all intelligent people, Lex was prone to suspicion. He was skeptical about the Wayne Group's sudden arrival in the town.
Lex, the bald one, glanced at his brother and pondered for a moment. "Gino, I want you to go there and take a look if you have time."
"The land that Bruce Wayne values must have something special about it."
Gino shrugged, indifferent. "If you insist, I'll go take a look tomorrow."
"As for now, I'm going back to the castle to get some sleep. I'm really tired."
Gino stood up, yawning as he walked out of the base.
He hadn't had milk in a while, and he was starting to crave it.
It was another morning.
"Grrr…"
After finishing a carton of milk, Clark walked down the hall of Smallville High School, complaining to Gino, "God, you disappeared without a word for a week, everyone was really worried about you."
"My bad, I'll let you guys know next time I go on a trip," Gino said with a smile, handing Clark a carton of milk.
The two walked into the school newspaper office side by side.
Lana and Chloe were busy tidying up the newspaper office.
"Morning, how can I help?" Clark, a milk pouch still in his mouth, stepped forward to assist Lana.
Not far away, Chloe watched Clark offer his help to Lana. She then glanced at Gino, who was standing at the door, picking up a newspaper from the table and flipping through it. A barely perceptible look of disappointment flickered in the girl's eyes.
"Hmm, Wayne Enterprises employees are claiming they were attacked by a Werewolf at night?" Gino frowned slightly, staring at the headline on this morning's paper.
Werewolves existed in their town?
"That's right. The employee claims a Werewolf bit his arm before escaping into the forest." Chloe stood up and snatched the newspaper from Gino's hand, pointing at the front page. "I'm planning to go check it out after school. Anyone want to come with me?"
Lana was the first to respond, "I'm in."
As she spoke, the girl glanced at Clark. Clark was taken aback for a moment, then quickly recovered, scratching his head, and saying, "Yeah, I'm in too."
The big boy smiled shyly at Gino, "Gino, you coming?"
"Alright," Gino shrugged, his gaze sweeping over the panicked man in the newspaper's headline photo.
Werewolf?
Seems like a pretty good experimental subject, doesn't it?
Time always flew by. When the bell rang, the after-school foursome piled into Clark's red SUV.
Chloe, the team's know-it-all, pulled out a map from her backpack and pointed out the route: "Hmm, according to the map, there's a trail in Back Mountain that will let us sneak into the construction site and avoid the Wayne Group's guards."
"But if we do that, we might have to park the car at the foot of the mountain," Clark said, glancing back at the two girls in the rearview mirror with concern. "Can you guys handle the hike?"
"Of course!" Lana puffed out her chest, glaring at Clark. "Girls can do everything you can do!"
"Heh."
Gino chuckled, looking at the confident Lana and Chloe, and inwardly smiled.
He didn't think these two girls could endure the boredom of climbing the mountain.
"Vroom~"
The engine roared, propelling the off-road vehicle as it sped down the road, kicking up a swirl of autumn leaves.
Not far off, the mountain's base came into view.
The setting sun cast its rays over the hillside, as if dusting the grass with gold powder.
On the hillside, Clark and Gino walked side by side.
The big boy looked glum and said, "I finally understand why you were smirking back then."
Just as Gino had guessed, Lana and Chloe couldn't make it up the entire hillside and chose to wait for them in the car.
"We're here," Gino said, patting Clark on the shoulder.
Standing on the summit, they gazed down at the basin-like valley below.
Numerous pieces of heavy construction equipment were parked in the valley. The Wayne Group's large sign stood tall on the land. It was all enclosed by barbed wire, clearly, the Native Americans had annoyed the person in charge of this construction site.
Clark's gaze swept over the valley, and he touched his nose. "No one's here. Looks like the police have temporarily shut down the site."
"And, there seems to be something underground to the west."
Gino followed Clark's pointing finger.
Beneath the layers of earth was a huge underground cavern.
"This might be the truth behind the Wayne Group's mining here!"
Clark was excited, as if he had guessed the truth about the Wayne Group.
The two of them walked down the slope and jumped over the tall barbed wire fence.
"The soil layers here aren't too hard."
Gino clenched his fist and slammed it down on the ground beneath his feet.
"Boom!"
The earth seemed to be wailing, the soil trembled and mud surged.
With a "Rumble" the already loose soil cracked and crumbled, collapsing into a cavern.
"Cough, cough." Clark waved his hand, trying to clear the dust from his nose.
And as the smoke dispersed, a dark, black hole suddenly appeared before their eyes.
"Let's go."
Gino, unafraid, jumped into the hole first.
"Whoosh~"
The inertia of the rapid descent caused his body to rub against the air, sounding like the wailing of ghosts and gods exploding in his ears.
The distance of dozens of meters vanished in an instant. Just as he was about to hit the ground, Gino deployed his Bio-Field and landed safely.
"Aah!"
Clark's scream echoed overhead, and Gino, expressionless, stepped aside.
Then, "BOOM!"
Clark, having lost control of his body, landed on all fours, smashing into the dirt and rocks.
He scrambled to his feet, looking rather disheveled, and gave his friend a wry smile. "Honestly, I still don't understand how you can fly."
After the Byron incident, Clark remembered Gino's graceful flight.
This had greatly spurred Clark's own efforts. After returning home, he secretly practiced flying behind his family's back.
However, his progress was minimal, far less effortless than Gino's aerial maneuvers.
"We have important things to do. I can teach you later," Gino said, shaking his head. His eyes glowed red as he picked up a dry branch and lit it.
Orange flames banished the darkness, the scorching light illuminating the entire underground cavern.
Black stone pillars stood in rows, with strangely shaped stalactites hanging overhead.
And what was even more intriguing were the patterns painted on the walls of the cave.
"What are those things?"
Clark's eyes widened, unable to believe what he was seeing.
Almost every available space in the cavern was covered in ancient murals.
It was like the ancient people had used simple paintings to record hunting scenes.
The historical information contained within these simple murals piqued Clark's deep interest: "If Chloe knew there were so many murals here, she'd definitely regret not coming."
Clark's gaze swept across the murals covering the wall, and he turned to his friend with interest, "What do you think these murals represent?"
In the dim light, Gino's handsome profile was faintly visible. He said softly, "Perhaps, it has something to do with your origins, Clark."
He finally managed to sort out the recent plot developments in his mind, and felt a lot more relaxed.
