Ethan forced his eyes open with great effort, only to find himself in a classroom. The setup was oddly familiar. He looked toward the teacher at the podium, and his mind went blank.
He rubbed his eyes hard and looked again.
"Iruka?!"
Ethan gasped internally. The person lecturing was none other than Iruka-sensei, the teacher from Naruto, the anime he loved!
Glancing around at the students sitting nearby, his suspicions were confirmed. Familiar faces were scattered all around him: pink-haired Sakura, blonde Ino, shy Hinata with shoulder-length black hair, cool and handsome Sasuke, stoic Shino, loud Kiba, and Naruto, who was sprawled over his desk with a bored look in his eyes. Even Choji was right beside him, munching on a bag of chips.
Wait a second, where was that smart, laid-back, trouble-avoiding Shikamaru?
Ethan looked around but didn't see him.
"Shikamaru! What are you looking for?"
Choji's voice came from beside him. Ethan's heart skipped a beat. He turned toward Choji, who was staring at him in confusion.
Choji was talking… to him?
"Ah… nothing. Class is such a drag. I'm gonna nap."
With that, Ethan laid his head on the desk. Choji just muttered "oh" and went back to his chips.
"No way… Did I become Shikamaru?"
Underneath the desk, Ethan's mind was spinning. How on earth had he ended up in the world of Naruto? He had just gone to sleep, how did he wake up as Nara Shikamaru?
Just then, a strange sensation surged in his head. Everything went black, and he passed out. Thankfully, since he'd been pretending to sleep, no one noticed.
Darkness. Endless darkness surrounded him. But Ethan didn't feel afraid, he actually liked the dark. Suddenly, a faint white light approached from the distance. Floating toward him was a glowing figure, Shikamaru himself.
"Who are you? Why are you in my body?"
Shikamaru's spirit demanded answers.
Ethan's mind raced but he stayed calm. "Me? I am you."
"What? Then what about me?"
Shikamaru clearly wasn't buying it.
Ethan went on to explain: Shikamaru had actually had a split personality all along. Ethan was his other self, who had been asleep for six years. Now it was time for him to take over for a while and get some air. (Of course, Ethan made all of this up on the spot, Shikamaru, being just six years old mentally, had never heard of anything like this and believed him without question.)
In the end, not wanting to deal with the hassle, Shikamaru simply gave up control. His soul merged with Ethan's, fusing into one.
When Ethan came to, he had access to all of Shikamaru's memories. He realized he had only just enrolled in the Ninja Academy, and there were still six years until the main storyline began.
Relieved, he thought, Good, I've got time to prepare.
"Alright then, from now on, I am Shikamaru! Haha! Let's see how the ninja world changes with me in it!"
From now on, Ethan will live as Shikamaru. His old life as an orphan in his past world held nothing worth clinging to. Now that he was in Shikamaru's body, he would embrace this new life fully.
Based on everything he remembered from the show, Ethan knew the Nara clan's Shadow Imitation Technique had real potential. Right now, his biggest priority was improving his strength. At the moment, all he had were the basic three jutsu: Transformation, Clone, and Substitution.
But with his previous life's knowledge, Ethan didn't underestimate these basic techniques. Used correctly, they might not be powerful offensively, but they were more than enough to save his life.
So for now, his plan was clear: master the basic Three Techniques, then combine them with the Shadow Imitation Technique once he learned it.
He was determined. Someday, he would carve out a place for himself among the elite.
Of course, he also needed to build up his physical condition and refine his chakra. That was the foundation of any true ninja.
The next day, he strapped five pounds of weights onto each arm and leg. At first, it was overwhelming, his body couldn't handle it. But from that day forward, his daily life became structured and focused.
Every morning, he got up early to refine chakra. During class, he "listened" while sleeping, with his newfound memory and intelligence, anything he actually heard once, he remembered. His mind worked much faster than before.
After school, he trained in the woods, tirelessly practicing the Three Techniques.

Three years passed.
Once his father finally taught him the Shadow Imitation Technique, he added it to his arsenal. But he knew better than to spread himself too thin, he ignored other ninjutsu entirely and threw himself into mastering what he had. Again and again. Ten times, a hundred times, a thousand, ten thousand…
By the time the main story was about to begin, the weights he wore totaled two hundred pounds. His body had become lean and muscular, not exactly handsome, but exuding a rugged, masculine charm.
Most importantly, his Three Techniques were nearly instantaneous. He could execute one in a tenth of a second. His chakra reserves had reached chunin-level, and his overall power far exceeded the original Shikamaru in the anime.
He believed even most jonin wouldn't be able to last long against him, and some might even lose outright.
"Tomorrow is the graduation exam. Heh… I'm actually looking forward to it."
