Kai's POV
Kai Sterling felt the wolfsbane poison burning through his body, but he forced himself to stay awake. Through the mate bond, he could feel Maya nearby. She was scared and angry, which meant she was in danger.
His danger.
From his prison cell, he could hear voices upstairs getting louder and more angry. Something bad was happening in the main hall, and he had to help.
Kai crawled to the cell door and pressed his ear against the cold metal. Victoria's voice came through clearly, high and crazy with fear.
"If I can't have my husband's love, then no one gets to have his legacy!"
Kai's blood went cold. Victoria was threatening someone. Maybe Emma. Maybe Maya. He had to get out of this cell now.
The wolfsbane had made him weak, but it hadn't fully broken his wolf spirit. Kai closed his eyes and called on every bit of power he had left. His hands began to change, growing claws that could cut through metal.
