Chapter 1 - A falling world

Alex was a normal electrical engineer working in 2025. Life was good, until May 30th at 7:30pm, Alex had just arrived home from a long shift and switched on his TV." breaking news from right here in Portland Oregon as reports of people encountering mindless rotting corpses walking in downtown, they seem to be extremely hostile avoid at all cost, I repeat avoid at all cost." I looked at the TV in complete shock at the words left the news anchors mouth."there's no way I'm gonna believe this." I suddenly burst out into laughter." I can't believe they almost got me with that bs." I said as I slowly started calming down."Well I might as well head off to bed." I said slapping my palms onto my knees and pushing myself up to my feet, but as I stood up a blaring alarm suddenly rang through the air as I look twords the source. The TV was now displaying a emergency broadcast from the government."Warning, all residents of Portland Oregon. Your town is now under strick quarantine, please remain inside. Zombie's as seen in modern media have started mysteriously appearing around you general vicinity, I repeat please remain indoors until the time in which the situation is under control. We are attempting to subdue all infected individuals, if you think you might have been infected, do not under any circumstances approach others. Thanks for your understanding." As the TV returned to static I realized the gravity of this situation."W-What, this has to be some sort of sick joke, this can't be happening." I said tripping over nothing, as I landed I clutched my head in my hands and Started sobbing. After about 10 minutes of crying I was snapped back to reality by the sound of helicopters flying overhead. As the helicopters soared above I slowly crept over to my window and lifted one of the blinds."Oh my God." I whispered out as the street's were lined with people, slowly shambling about. I watched as my neighbor, Brenda walk outside with her husbands pistol and opened fire on a couple of the undead. BANG, BANG, BANG, the gunshots ring out as three zombies fell to the floor. Then a distinct clicking sound came through the eerie silence, the easily recognizable sound of an empty gun quietly sounded through the streets. As the gunfire stopped the undead started, slowly walking twords Brenda, unlucky for Brenda they weren't as slow as she thought. As she ran for her door the zombies spread up, from there earlier slow shambling, to a jog, Easily catching up to Brenda. She had just placed her hand on the door handle when one grabbed her arm, pulling her into the board. As she was pinned down one of those monsters grabbed her wrist and pulled, after about 5 seconds all your could here where Brenda's screams echoing through the Town. As they ripped her apart first her arms then her legs, then finally her head." She's gone." I whispered softly as I once again fell on my butt. Eyes still wide as the site of the kinda old woman who brought me cookies getting ripped apart was still fresh on my mind."I-I gotta get out of here." I said terrified as I ran for my room, grabbing my bag full of electrical supplies and my backpack. As I did I suddenly heard the sound of of the helicopters heading back this way, as they approach my lcation.
