Trainers were truly essential to Pokémon. A Pokémon's performance shifted entirely depending on whether their Trainer was present on the field. If Jiang Yuan were here, his Gyarados certainly wouldn't have been consumed by such a mindless, irrational rage.
Dragonite continued to circle the area, biding its time. From time to time, it dove through the air, striking down at Gyarados with Thunderbolt. After being hit by several Thunderbolts and a follow-up Thunder, Gyarados finally slumped into a state of paralysis.
"It's paralyzed. Let's see if Dragonite can seize the opening," Jiang Chen noted, his eyes narrowing slightly. He didn't issue a direct command, however. He wanted to cultivate Dragonite's ability to fight autonomously.
This independent combat prowess became vital once a Pokémon reached the Champion level. At that tier, battles moved so quickly that a Trainer barely had time to shout a command. Even in Elite Four level matches, things often happened faster than a Trainer could react.
Dragonite did not disappoint. The moment it saw Gyarados's body stiffen from the paralysis, it lunged. It slammed into its opponent with a Giga Impact, sending Gyarados flying through the air.
Before the sea serpent could recover, a Hyper Beam blasted toward it, driving Gyarados deep into the seabed. Even then, Dragonite didn't relent. It knew such a barrage might not be enough to truly keep Gyarados down. It gathered its strength and unleashed one last full-power Thunder, causing the surface of the ocean to erupt in a massive explosion.
"Even a skyscraper wouldn't be able to withstand an attack like that," Ling Wanqiu remarked.
Only after a Pokémon reached the Elite Four level could one truly appreciate the sheer scale of their destructive power. In its current state, Dragonite was nothing short of a walking natural disaster.
"Keep up the pressure, Dragonite," Jiang Chen called out. Seeing the dragon look as though it were about to stop, he added, "Remember, never drop your guard until you are certain your opponent is completely unable to battle."
Dragonite had intended to pull back after that final Thunder, but upon hearing Jiang Chen's order, it immediately resumed its assault. Another Thunder crashed down another strike at full capacity. As resilient as Gyarados was, it couldn't survive such a relentless, consecutive pounding.
"It's over," Jiang Chen said with a faint smile. "Gardevoir, pull Gyarados out of the water."
Using Confusion, Gardevoir lifted the battered Gyarados from the depths. The sea serpent hadn't fainted yet, but it was clearly spent, lacking any remaining strength to fight.
"Gyarados, from now on, you will follow my training and my orders to the letter. Do you understand?" Jiang Chen asked.
Gyarados looked reluctant, but the memory of its defeat at Dragonite's hands was still fresh. It eventually lowered its head and nodded. It was a stubborn creature, and Jiang Chen knew that if Dragonite hadn't beaten it so decisively, it likely wouldn't have been so compliant. Had that happened, he would have had to let Beedrill handle things and Beedrill would have made things far more painful for the serpent.
"Diancie, come out and treat its wounds."
"Gardevoir~!"
Gardevoir sounded a bit miffed at seeing Diancie called out for healing. She knew how to heal as well; why wasn't she given the task?
"If I let you handle it, it would take far too long to fully mend Gyarados's injuries," Jiang Chen said, offering a lollipop to Gardevoir to soothe her feelings.
Diancie gave a small wave of her hand and used Heal Pulse, closing Gyarados's wounds. Once it felt better, the serpent immediately shot a hostile glare at Dragonite. It was clear Gyarados held a grudge over its defeat. Dragonite merely scratched the back of its head awkwardly.
"Stop staring and start focusing. I want you to sense the Power of the Water Source," Jiang Chen said, lightly kicking the side of the serpent before producing the Blue Orb.
The moment the Blue Orb appeared, Gyarados's gaze snapped away from Dragonite, fixating entirely on the artifact. From within the orb, the serpent could feel an incredibly dense concentration of water energy.
"What exactly is that pearl?" Xiao Luoxue asked, staring at the Blue Orb. Looking into it was like staring into the depths of a dark blue ocean; it seemed even deeper and more profound than the sea itself. "If it's a secret, you don't have to tell me."
"It's a secret, I suppose, but I can tell you it's related to the creator of the oceans," Jiang Chen replied.
"The creator of the oceans? You mean Lugia, the Guardian of the Seas?" Ling Wanqiu and Xiao Luoxue looked at him with curiosity.
"No. The Guardian of the Seas is one thing, but the creator of the oceans is Kyogre. This belongs to Kyogre," Jiang Chen explained.
Legends said that Kyogre had created the seas. In this world, Kyogre likely truly possessed that kind of divine might.
"So, who is stronger? Kyogre, the creator, or Lugia, the Sea God?" Xiao Luoxue asked, her curiosity piqued.
"Who knows? Unless they actually fought, we wouldn't know for sure. Besides, there probably isn't just one of each. Even among Kyogre, some might be stronger than others."
Legendary Pokémon weren't always unique. Mewtwo might be the only one of its kind, but it was still unknown if Mewtwo even existed in this world yet. After all, it was a Pokémon created from the genes of Mew. No one knew if Team Rocket's creation would ever appear here.
"If their base strength is similar, I'd bet on Kyogre in a fight."
Kyogre could use the Blue Orb for Primal Reversion, which was essentially a form of Mega Evolution, giving it a massive edge in combat.
"But I think it's best we don't hope for them to fight. If they truly went at it, we humans would be the ones who suffered."
Whenever Legendaries fought, humanity paid the price especially when it involved the terrifying Major Legendaries. Sub-Legendaries could easily wipe out a city; a battle between Major Legendaries would likely shift the continental plates. If Kyogre simply showed up and activated its Ability, the resulting Heavy Rain alone could drown everything.
Of course, if Kyogre ever tried to submerge the land, its ancient rival Groudon would certainly rise to stop it. Then the two of them would clash, which would likely draw out Rayquaza to suppress them.
"If that pearl is linked to Kyogre, will it sense the aura and come looking for it?" Ling Wanqiu asked worriedly. If Kyogre was a Major Legendary as Jiang Chen said, what would they do if it came looking for trouble?
"Don't worry. Kyogre is likely slumbering in some forgotten corner of the world. One of these days, I'll find a way to catch a Rayquaza specifically to keep Kyogre in check," Jiang Chen joked.
If he could ever afford a Major Legendary, Rayquaza would be his first choice. It could Mega Evolve on its own without needing a Mega Stone. Among the Legendaries, Rayquaza's combat power was top-tier. More importantly, Jiang Chen just liked it; Dragon Ascent was an incredibly cool move, especially the black, Shiny Rayquaza from the movies.
For now, these were just idle thoughts. He was still a long way from being able to "purchase" a Major Legendary. With his current points, he could barely manage a Sub-Legendary, but he felt there was no point in buying one. If he didn't have any Legendaries, he might buy a Sub-Legendary to show off, but he already had one that had reached the status of a Tier 2 Legendary.
Reaching Tier 2 from Tier 3 had granted him 100 million points. If it ever reached Major Legendary status, the reward would likely be a billion. With a billion points, a Major Legendary would be within his grasp. So, reaching that level wasn't an impossible dream; it just depended on when the breakthrough happened.
Normally, it would take hundreds of years for a Pokémon to grow into a Major Legendary, but Jiang Chen had the Psychic Mind Plate. That Plate had accelerated the growth significantly. It was the primary reason his partner had reached the Tier 2 level so quickly.
The Plate truly deserved its reputation as an item belonging to Arceus, the Great Alpaca. The system store sold them for a billion points, and honestly, that might have been a bargain.
"Let's just focus on training by the beach today."
Jiang Chen released all of his Pokémon over a dozen in total. Most of them were at the Elite Four level. It was hard to believe they all belonged to a boy who wasn't even sixteen yet. Ling Wanqiu and Xiao Luoxue released their Pokémon as well. While their teams were strong perhaps even surpassing older geniuses they were still completely eclipsed by Jiang Chen's roster.
