"This has got to be a joke," Alexa muttered. She pressed redial and got sent straight to voicemail. Again.
This time, she hit record.
"I don't know what you're playing at, but I'm done being the one in the dark. You said you wanted to work together. If you're going to vanish after every move like a deranged magician, then maybe you've forgotten who you're dealing with. I'm not afraid of you, Callum. I never was. But if you keep pulling this crap, I will bury you—publicly and permanently!"
She hit send.
Her voice echoed in her head. She sounded unhinged. Good.
Let him feel the heat.
Let him know she wasn't cornered yet.
She spun, ready to storm out, when a small rustle in the far corridor made her raise the gun again.
"Who's there?" Her breath caught.
But it was just the wind. A broken shutter, clanging against its frame.
She lowered the weapon.
And that's when it hit her again.
He wasn't here.
