Tommy shook off the trepidation from the information. There was nothing he could do at the moment if Callum wasn't working alone. He refocused on Evie.
"I should've done more to protect you," he said again, quieter this time. "I should've known that it was still too dangerous. After the bathroom incident, I should've seen it."
Evie looked at him then, and for a heartbeat, something cracked. The wall she was hiding behind chipped just a bit.
"You couldn't have known," she said finally. "I barely considered that he would be so bold as to strike again."
Her words conveyed a tone of subtle forgiveness.
They remained like that, suspended in the stillness of the room that was too familiar. The weight of everything unsaid pressed in like a second atmosphere.

She rose from the bed, still swaying slightly, and crossed the short space between them. Her hands reached out, one resting gently on his chest. Tommy froze, breath locking in his lungs.
