Chapter 34 - Chapter Thirty Four

The room smelled like mould, old sweat, and something else Evie didn't want to think of. Damp air clung to her skin like grease, and it itched. Not even when she was in foster housing without water had she felt so unclean.

Evie sat slumped against the corner wall with her back stiff and her muscles burning. Her throat felt like sandpaper, and the sticky residue of her sweat and dirt coated her skin. Her wrists were red and abraded from the bindings. She felt disgusting but alive.

Whatever Callum had planned for her, it didn't seem to include untimely death. Yet

The door creaked open with a chilling slowness.

Callum stepped inside without urgency, and an annoying smirk was already lingering on his lips. In one hand, he held a plastic bottle of water. He tossed it casually toward her feet. It rolled, bumping against her ankle.

"Hydration," he said, as if offering a favour instead of a cruel necessity.
