Volume 1 Chapter 17: Chickened Out
He tried to think positively, maybe Wen Yang had just gone out to buy something.
But the more Ning Chu thought about the bar scene that got triggered in the cafeteria, the darker his expression became.
Even though he had managed to interrupt that storyline for now, those girls hadn't given up on Wen Yang. They were still lurking like lions in the grass, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.
Putting himself in Wen Yang's shoes—slightly tipsy in a bar, with a pair of flirtatious twin sisters hanging off of him…
Even someone with strong self-control would find it hard to resist!
But if it's him, he could resist. At most, he'd be a little tempted—after all, his "weapon" was already broken anyway.
"…What do I do?" Ning Chu muttered, his brows furrowed with frustration. He sat at his desk, leg bouncing nonstop. "If I let this storyline keep progressing, something bad is definitely going to happen."
Once Wen Yang got a taste of that kind of thing, there'd be no going back. He'd never be that obedient little guy again.
Ning Chu's face was full of anxiety. After sitting still for a while, he stood up and impulsively headed for the door, only to turn back halfway and start pacing around the dorm in frustration.
Wang Jie had just finished a game. Turning around and seeing how frantic Ning Chu looked, he asked curiously, "You looking for Wen Yang? Why not just call him?"
Call him...
Ning Chu looked over at his phone on the desk, tempted. But then he hesitated.
He was just a roommate—was it really his place to keep tabs on Wen Yang like this? Even if he claimed it was for Wen Yang's own good, over time, anyone would find that kind of control annoying.
Even parents who try to micromanage their kids all the time end up getting rebelled against.
But if he didn't do something, and those twins really did "eat Wen Yang clean and dry"…
Sure, maybe Wen Yang would be enjoying himself at the time—but afterward, the chance of him being pushed down would increase tremendously.
Ning Chu sat down, still hesitating, staring hard at his computer screen.
Damn it! Authors are supposed to treat their protagonists like their children, right? So what if he's a bit strict as a "dad"?
Being hated is better than being... defiled, right?!
Quickly, he opened WeChat and sent Wen Yang a not-so-subtle message:
"I put the laundry in the washer. Where'd you go? Grab your clothes on the way back up."
The beginning and end were just filler. The real message was in the middle—"Where'd you go?"
"I'm going for a shower," Wang Jie said behind him with a yawn and a stretch. "Looks like it's just the two of us tonight~"
Like hell it is.
"Too bad Shaoqing's not here. We could've had him treat us to late-night snacks..." Wang Jie said, walking toward the bathroom like an old man, tapping his shoulder with his shirt.
"Mhm," Ning Chu replied vaguely, eyes still glued to the WeChat screen, waiting for Wen Yang's reply.
But none came.
Oh no. Oh no.
Don't tell him the "battle" has already started?!
Frantically, Ning Chu called Wen Yang. But after a few minutes, no one picked up.
Slumping onto the desk with a dead look in his eyes, he let go of the tension he'd been holding all this time.
Forget it. I give up.
Why can't that guy just control his lower half for once?!
Ning Chu stared blankly at the tabletop, utterly drained.
All the effort he'd put in for over a week… gone.
"Well, he is the protagonist of a hentai webnovel," Ning Chu muttered bitterly. "Of course he can't keep it in his pants…"
He should've gone with more extreme measures from the start.
Like kidnapping Wen Yang and locking him up in a basement!
If he took control of Wen Yang's personal freedom, there'd be no storyline to develop. No more worrying every day!
Or maybe he could wait for a dark, moonless night and… slice off his junk.
Problem solved at the source!
Or even better—just spike Wen Yang's water with hormones and chemically disable his junk.
Wang Jie came out of the shower just a few minutes later, shirtless and looking quite content as he pushed the door open. But the smile on his face froze mid-step.
He instinctively glanced at Ning Chu, who was still sitting at his desk, and suddenly felt a chill run down his spine. His scalp tingled like he'd just seen a devil being born right before his eyes.
The sheer malice radiating off Ning Chu was practically visible.
"Whoa, whoa—what kind of dark stuff are you thinking about?" Wang Jie stepped forward, leaned over, and waved a hand in front of Ning Chu's face. "Why are you staring off like that?"
Ning Chu finally snapped out of it and quickly shook his head, trying to banish the evil thoughts from his mind. "Nothing."
"Nothing? You were just smiling like a total creep."
"Was I?!" Ning Chu shot him a glare, then flopped onto the desk. "Forget it, I'm not gonna argue with you."
"Hey!"
Wang Jie had barely taken two steps away when Ning Chu suddenly let out a sharp gasp. Startled, Wang Jie turned around—only to see Ning Chu clutching his phone and sprinting out to the balcony, his face lit up with excitement and relief.
"What's with the drama?" Wang Jie muttered. "Always making a big deal out of nothing."
Outside, on the balcony, Ning Chu hugged his phone tightly. When he saw who was calling, his finger hovered eagerly above the answer button—but then he hesitated.
If he picked up too fast, Wen Yang might overthink things.
Clearing his throat softly, he forced himself to calm down, then nervously answered the call. "Hello?"
"You called me?" Wen Yang's voice came through the line.
In the background, loud DJ music and the buzz of a partying crowd could be heard.
Ning Chu's heart sank.
This was the worst-case scenario.
Wen Yang really had gone to the bar with those twin sisters.
No doubt he'd end up tipsy, trapped in a private booth, seduced and teased by the two of them until alcohol and hormones overwhelmed his brain—on his way to a full "triple queue ranked match" with no escape.
"It's… it's really noisy where you are," Ning Chu said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Even though he'd suspected Wen Yang would fall to temptation, hearing the sounds of the bar himself made all his efforts over the past week feel utterly pointless.
His mood plummeted.
"I'm at a bar," Wen Yang replied. "It's so loud my ears are ringing. I didn't see your call earlier—I just stepped outside." His voice was still the same as always: deep, a little rough, magnetic and calm. He complained mildly, "The drinks here are insanely expensive. I didn't dare touch a single drop. Feels like I'm just here to serve time."
"…Huh?"
You didn't drink?! That means… you haven't been devoured yet?
"So, uh… why'd you call me?" Wen Yang asked.
"Oh, I was just wondering where you went. I also wanted to ask you to grab the laundry on your way back upstairs," Ning Chu replied quickly, latching onto the excuse he'd prepared. But after a pause, he cautiously added, "When are you coming back?"
"Now. I'm already outside waiting for a ride."
"You serious?!" Ning Chu's voice shot up with joy. "What about the girls who went with you? You just ditched them?"
Wen Yang hesitated a bit, sounding slightly awkward. "The girls, uh… they kept trying to get me to drink. I think they were hired by the bar to get people to buy more booze. I don't have much cash on me… You know how there's been a lot of those scams lately. I've only got, like, a hundred yuan to my name right now."
Of course he couldn't admit he chickened out. If he did, Ning Chu would never let him live it down.
"Pfft!"
Ning Chu couldn't hold back his laughter, his grin so wide it made his eyes curve into crescent moons.
