Still frozen in place, Anna could hear the steady, rhythmic thud of Aidan's heart beneath her ear, pulsing in sync with her own. That simple, human beat felt real and it mesmerized her.
For a fleeting moment, nothing else existed.
Suddenly, Aidan's phone rang again, splitting the silence like a blade. The spell broke, and Anna sat up abruptly, brushing herself off. She began collecting the pizza boxes which were already a mess on the floor.
She heard Aidan say behind her. "Hello, Mike."
That got her attention. This was probably about the interview. Mike was the friend he said he had in the media.
She couldn't hear what Mike was saying but after a short while, Aidan disconnected the call.
"The interview is set for tomorrow. 10 a.m.," Aidan said, pushing himself up from the floor with a light groan.
Anna gave a quick nod. "Good. The sooner we get it over with, the better."
