Cherreads

Chapter 15 - Chapter 14

A border dispute rose so we were told to avoid the Sentinel regions. It is a district that is run by artificial intelligence. The residents have a red thread inserted into their brain. This is a chip that connects them with Core intelligence. The information hub that controls everyone and everything that lives there. It scans the neurons to find a person the candidate admires and takes that form. It would feed them information which they take very seriously. The border dispute rose only because of a mistake that Core intelligence made. As it refreshed its information and a portion of the nearby Faraday system in the Usra Minor regions was accidentally declared a part of the Sentinel regions. To stop this from escalating the regional magistrate requested the intergalactic cartography department to go through their records for clarity. The Sentinels were protesting saying that the Core intelligence is never wrong till they were shown that it is just a computer program. It can be hacked and altered. Once the map was restored the Core intelligence was temporarily deactivated for safety reasons. The reboot took a few days but the Arman was told to stay away as the locals are treating foreigners as enemies of the planet. They are doing a security check to see who has been tampering with their leader. They will shoot first and ask questions never. So the pilot in the nervous system of Arman tried to redirect to the Colar system in towards the outer regions. But was told it was the lawless zone so he must redirect to the planet Azure in the Raga system as some of the refugees on board were being relocated there. The refugees were pleased to have a place of their own to call home. They left because their sun was dying. The forecast was that it could explode at any time.

I remember learning that Azure was a planet that we must not visit under any circumstances. I learned in school it was where anyone from other planets are forced into slave labor. It was discovered during the bilateral discussion to strengthen ties between the two oppression sovereign planets. I quickly ran to tell them that. The governor requested proof so I showed him the holographic video as proof. So they had to divert to Anecostia. It is a marine mineral mining planet. The colony living there were looking for honest workers to help operate the underwater rover and help in the processing plant. They harvest yttrium, lanthanum and Neodymium. They are pleased to have new faces. They thanked the governor and he told them that I was the one who warned him. So they gave me a small token of thanks. It was a talon of a thunderbird. A pet of these lovely folks. The guardian marshal stared as I walked towards my home. He joined me in the elevator. He had one question. Why are people so interested in me? I simply said, "I am something they are not." He asked me to continue and I had a bad feeling so I ignored him and went indoors. I locked it properly and went to sleep.

The next morning I was in the garden cleaning the pond. I got a notification. I was summoned to the courthouse. I show up and there are rows of soldiers on one side and civilians on the others. The guardian marshal's baby sister was in cuffs. Apparently she pretended to be me but unfortunately the tattoo she had was different from mine so the alarm went off. Everyone in this library has a unique tattoo. It is the same as a fingerprint. No two people have the same tattoo. The tattoo on her ankle is copper colored and has flecks of black. She was asked to prove that she is me but she was unable to do so. She was arrested and dragged to the containment cells. As she passed through the security halls the walls scanned her body for identification, for weapons and other nonsense. By the time she reached the end of the corridor her father was waiting for her. He didn't know the security protocols that this library has. The secret of the tattoos are kept under lock and key for this very reason. So that no one can frame others for a crime that they didn't commit. The senior magistrate asked me if I wanted to press charges. I said that I am willing to overlook this offense if she promised to leave me alone. The person she actually harassed wanted justice so she was sentenced to work in the sanitation department for the next five years. She asked me why she couldn't fool anyone. I walked out without a word.

I kept tossing and turning and finally I came up with a choice. I decided to leave Arman because a lot of people have been eyeing me. I have had enough. I came here for peace. So far the guardian marshals have all taken a vested interest in me. I have decided to leave. Unfortunately the governor didn't accept my plea to leave. He did however grant me a temporary pass so I can go explore other planets. But I was warned that I must abide by the law of the planet. He gave me a Trussle scout ship. It was a brand new beta class and looked decent. It was spear shaped and a sleek forest green paint job. I was asked to send any new discoveries to the cartography department. I thanked him for the ship but chose to leave on my lovely Strata. I had taken her on a few test rides but I have never ventured out in this old beauty. I collected the rest of my belongings and made sure that my honeycomb house was nothing but bare walls. I happily made it to my ship and dumped my belongings on the floor before I locked the door and did the seismic waves test. Once I was certain that I was by myself I sat in the cockpit and flew to the midsection of the galaxy. If things get bad I can always disguise myself and go back to Antar. I set the coordinates for Polaris Major. A simple, humble planet that is self sufficient and bold. The portal library mentioned that the planet is divided into five sections. The northern and southern polar research facility. The upper and lower farming colonies. And finally the equatorial foragers. I opened the star bridge and went through it. As I passed through the starry path I got up and started sorting the stuff where it belongs. Then I sat down to tend to my miniature garden.

The ship gave a signal as though it was saying we have reached our destination. The Harbour master made it clear to land in the polar research facility since the farming and foragers don't take kindly to technology. They prefer being simple. I happily obliged and was escorted to a decontamination process. I was sterilized so no pathogens could escape and harm the locals. I met the head of this institute. The man was wearing a full body suit made of white acolid. A pathogen resistant, shiny smooth material used only to make biohazard suits. He had his head covering tucked under one arm. He happily welcomed me to Karanka Northern Institute for pathogenic studies. The others rose from their seats to gesture a sense of welcome. I was asked many questions after I was taken to the living quarters. I saw someone smirk and my instincts took over. I pretended to sleep and when I felt the coast was clear I snuck out. I heard one of the scientists talk to Arcan. Specifically to my worst nightmare itself. Cu rāutate was on the other end asking for confirmation. Since there are people in the galaxy that have similar facial features. They said that I can manipulate the elements. They said to put me in situations that would prompt me to use them. If they are unable to do so then they are ineligible for the bounty. I was so angry but this gave me an opportunity to learn patience. If I control myself then it is possible to dupe them and live here for a while. So I pretended to wake up. If I had bolted then their suspicion would become certainty. I just have to work hard to convince them that I am not me. The admiral in charge of this planet came and I was asked to leave since this facility houses some serious scientific advancements that are deemed classified.

I apologized profusely saying that I was flying for the first time and this was simply a stopover. I was leaving after lunch. He waved his hand and I had a soldier following me everywhere except for the bathroom. After lunch I boarded Strata and we were off. I remembered to switch off the comms as I tried to figure out my next stop. According to the portable library the safest path leads to Aegean territory. The peace loving community was welcome any and all as they followed three simple rules. The first is not to steal, murder or harm anyone in any way. The second one was to avoid the mountainous regions since they say that malevolent spirits lived there. People who go there never come back. They simply disappear without a trace. The third was simple if someone invites them to their house the person must say yes. Refusal can only be possible if there is a family emergency or some medical emergency. There is no penalty but The locals will trust you less thinking you have a superiority complexThe two unwritten rules were simple. Don't go out on to the streets past the eight thirty curfew. Drunkards roam the streets and accidents and other incidents occur. The other was to volunteer in the old folk's home at least once a week. So I happily flew in that direction till I caught sight of a scout ship tailing me. So I opened the star bridge and went to Anhedonia on purpose. I figured the person will do the same and I was right. I simply landed in the safe zone and switched off my ship. I took out the telescope to view the debacle. The ship's electromagnetron compass will certainly be going haywire. So it floated in space for a while and flew away to search for me elsewhere. I know for a fact that no scanner is going to work so the person will have to rely on their eyes to search. With little to no visibility it would be impossible to find me. Unless I was within five feet of their eyesight. The static and interference will mess with the radar and other devices. The longer they use their equipment the more likely they will sustain damage. I happily walked indoors and locked the door. I took a shower and changed my outfit and did laundry.
