Silas left Saffron City and once again set out on his journey.
His next destination was Fuchsia City, also known as the City of Nature.
Fuchsia City was most famous for its Safari Zone and the surrounding Pokémon Reserve areas.
The nature reserves, of course, weren't places one could enter at will. Otherwise, the stationed Officer Jennys and the guardians of the Larami Tribe nearby would make sure you understood the painful consequences. At the very least, you'd be locked up for a few days.
As for the Safari Zone, it was a place many trainers dreamed of visiting. Within it, you could capture the Pokémon you desired, and the only cost was a small fee.
Of course, there were many rules to follow inside it wasn't as simple as it seemed.
Silas walked along the road, holding a city guidebook officially published by the Pokémon League, reading it with great interest.
The booklet contained information on each city's history, current development, tourist attractions, and more. It was a must-have for any trainer traveling on a journey.
"Hmm… so it seems the Safari Zone isn't quite as amazing as I imagined."
He muttered to himself.
After putting the booklet into his backpack, Silas looked around. The scenery was barren, a stretch of yellow all around.
This was a rocky mountain region naturally desolate and lifeless.
And since it was the only path between Saffron and Fuchsia City, there were hardly any Pokémon living in the area. At most, there might be a few Geodudes.
As for why he wasn't flying on his Pidgeot—compared to the monotonous, mechanical badge-collecting process, Silas preferred experiencing the customs and cultures of different regions firsthand. After all, that was part of what being a Pokémon trainer on a journey was all about.
Besides, the flight routes were fixed. If you accidentally flew out of the League's designated airspace, the wild flying-type Pokémon wouldn't be polite. Such an experience wouldn't be enjoyable at all.
And if you happened to fall from the sky… well, that would be truly embarrassing.
Of course, if you had enough strength, no one would stop you from flying freely. You could soar however you pleased.
With his Snivy on his shoulder, Silas continued walking through the sea of yellow.
"Waii~"
A faint sound reached his ears, and Silas's ears twitched.
All that intense training over the past half-month hadn't been for nothing. In the past, he definitely wouldn't have noticed such a sound, but things were different now—his senses were far keener than before.
This voice... it sounded strangely familiar. Silas thought for a moment and realized—it was the cry of a Tyrogue.
But… could there really be wild Tyrogues living here?
He moved cautiously toward the direction the sound came from after first releasing his Blaziken. He remained careful.
Although most Tyrogues were below level 20 and would evolve if they got any higher—it was still better to be safe than sorry.
As he got closer, he heard a man's voice as well. Just as he thought there was no way a wild Tyrogue would be in this area.
"Come on, Tyrogue! Keep it up! Only by constantly attacking can you defeat your opponent! Keep striking! Once you evolve into a Hitmonchan, your fists will become your best weapons. Let's go!"
Silas blinked, then deliberately stepped a little heavier.
"Who's there? Come out!" The middle-aged man was quite alert, turning around and getting ready to defend himself.
"Sorry, I'm Silas Alaric, from Viridian City. I'm currently traveling to collect badges and compete in the League Conference."
Silas stepped out from behind a large boulder with Blaziken and Snivy at his sides.
The man relaxed a little the moment he saw the two Pokémon. He clearly recognized them as starter Pokémon, which served as proof of Silas's identity.
Anyone with two starter Pokémon was unlikely to be a bad guy.
Still, the man didn't drop his guard completely. "Please prove your identity. If not, I'd like you to leave. I'm training right now, and I don't want any misunderstandings."
Silas reached into his pocket and pulled out his Pokédex, opening it up. "This Pokédex was issued to Silas Alaric. Good luck, Pokémon Trainer.
Also, once this Pokédex is lost or stolen, it can't be reissued so please take good care of it!
—Message from Professor Oak of Pallet Town."
The Pokédex blinked, and the unmistakable voice of Professor Oak played from the device.
The moment the man saw the Pokédex, he immediately relaxed. And when he heard the voice, he even laughed out loud.
"Haha, sorry about that. I guess I was a bit too tense."
He scratched the back of his head, a little embarrassed.
A Pokédex was the best form of ID. As long as you were within the League's jurisdiction, anyone seeing one would automatically lower their guard.
So far, no one had ever been able to counterfeit a Pokédex—it was considered very secure.
"No worries. I just heard you training your Tyrogue and got curious, so I came over to take a look."
Silas gave him a harmless, friendly smile.
The man fully relaxed now and introduced himself, "I'm Sendo. I live nearby in the Dojo Gym and I'm currently training my Tyrogue with the goal of winning the P1 Grand Prix."
The P1 Grand Prix a fighting-type tournament where participating Pokémon generally possessed solid close-combat abilities. It was different from standard battles, with many moves restricted.
Because it was a small-scale competition, it was only held once every three years. The last one was just last year.
"He's got a lot of spirit!"
Silas watched the nearby Tyrogue training persistently and couldn't help but praise it.
A wide smile appeared on Sendo's honest face. For a Pokémon trainer, that was the highest compliment.
You could call me weak, you could say I'm ugly—but if you praise my Pokémon, we're good friends. It's just that simple.
"Yeah, he's amazing!" Sendo placed his hands on his hips and looked proudly at Tyrogue, his face glowing with joy.
"Just now, Uncle Sendo, I heard you say you're trying to raise him into a Hitmonchan?"
Silas watched the scene before him and asked curiously.
"Yeah, that's right. This little guy himself prefers using his fists in battle."
Sendo nodded without hesitation.
Although for a restricted tournament like the P1 Grand Prix, Hitmonlee's physique had a better advantage, Hitmonchan wasn't bad either.
"I see," Silas nodded, then shifted the topic. "But Uncle Sendo, focusing only on offense won't be enough to win, right?"
Sendo scratched his head awkwardly. "As for defense… well, Tyrogue isn't particularly good at it. I figured once he evolves into Hitmonchan, we could use his fists to block attacks."
He had more or less guessed what was happening this trainer named Silas seemed like he wanted to offer him some guidance.
Sendo was, of course, happy about that. He wasn't from some wealthy family and didn't have much experience training Pokémon—he was just doing his best with a heart full of passion.
And the young man in front of him was a league-registered trainer with a Pokédex. Surely, he had a lot of training knowledge. At least, that's what Sendo thought.
Silas looked at Sendo and sighed inwardly.
This was the reality of the Pokémon world.
Most people still had only a shallow understanding of Pokémon. They might know their appearances, names, and types, but even knowing a Pokémon's full move pool was beyond most people.
And it wasn't surprising there were just so many Pokémon. Apart from a few exceptional individuals, who could memorize all of them?
Not to mention more advanced topics like Pokémon development and training.
More often, it was people driven by passion and love for Pokémon who pressed forward on the path of becoming a trainer.
"If you want your Tyrogue to evolve into Hitmonchan, Uncle Sendo, then defensive training needs to start now!"
Silas turned to Sendo and Tyrogue and said seriously.
Tyrogue paused its training and turned toward the unfamiliar young man, curiosity in its eyes.
Silas gave it a friendly smile and continued explaining to Sendo, "Uncle Sendo, you might not know this, but Tyrogue's evolution method is quite unique.
If you want it to evolve into Hitmonchan, you need to focus primarily on defense during training. If you want it to evolve into Hitmonlee, then it should focus on offensive training.
As for Hitmontop, it requires a balance between offensive and defensive abilities.
This was recently discovered through research by Professor Oak's lab. It hasn't been widely publicized yet, so I understand if you haven't heard about it."
This was indeed a recent finding from Professor Oak's Laboratory and had just been announced.
After all, discovering the exact method for a Pokémon's evolution wasn't an easy task. It required eliminating numerous possibilities—and raising Pokémon for that purpose alone was already a massive undertaking.
Only a well-funded lab like Professor Oak's could afford to conduct such evolution research regularly.
This was also one of the reasons why Professor Rowan worked there. As an evolution expert, he wouldn't have access to the same volume of data if he worked elsewhere or conducted research independently.
Technically, the study wasn't supposed to be published this early, but due to personal requests from Bruno, Professor Oak had fast-tracked the release.
Recently, Nobuhiko had also been working on evolving his own Tyrogue.
"Ah!" Sendo's jaw dropped. He really hadn't known any of this.
"It's okay. There's still time. Just modify your training methods from now on, and it'll be fine."
Silas offered some reassurance.
"Got it!" Sendo nodded enthusiastically, expressing his deep thanks over and over.
"No problem. I'll be going now. Let's meet again if fate allows."
Silas briefly explained some techniques for defensive training, then turned and walked away.
Sendo watched his figure disappear into the distance, visibly excited. He turned to Tyrogue and said, "Looks like we need to work even harder and make up for the missed training!"
Tyrogue gave a firm nod.
Walking with his back toward them, Silas's lips curved into a slight smile.
This Sendo… he was probably the one Ash would meet in the future.
It really wasn't easy—he trained that Hitmonchan for over eight years, yet it still wasn't a match for Ash's Primeape, which Ash had only recently caught.
If possible, when Ash eventually begins his journey, Silas hoped to advise him not to leave his Pokémon with others for training.
In his past life, seeing that had made Silas very uncomfortable. Now that he had a chance to change it, he was determined to try.
