Chapter 141 - Chapter 141: Severing the Intangible

Inside the Saffron Gym.

Sabrina's eyes glowed with a faint blue light, a soft blush blooming on her cheeks.

"This is it..."

Her murmured words echoed gently through the room.

At this moment, Silas was in the middle of a fierce sparring match with Nobuhiko. Both of them were shirtless, wearing boxing gloves, exchanging rapid blows with each other.

"Faster! Pick up the pace!"

Nobuhiko shouted while constantly dodging Silas's punches, occasionally landing one or two himself.

For a Trainer, boxing was an extremely effective way to train one's reaction speed.

When Pokémon battled on the field, it was just like two fighters clashing with their fists.

In terms of physical strength,Silas held a slight edge over Nobuhiko, but looking at the current match, it was obvious that Nobuhiko had the upper hand.

He dodged nearly all of Silas's attacks with ease, and the few he did take were insignificant. In return, he aggressively counterattacked, trading blows to wear Silas down.

"All right, take a break."

Nobuhiko casually slapped away Silas's incoming punch and exhaled softly.

"Huff…"

Silas, on the other hand, was in much worse condition panting heavily with labored breaths, his entire body aching with fatigue.

"Snivy!"

Snivy looked on worriedly at her Trainer from the side, glaring at Nobuhiko angrily—clearly viewing him as a bad guy.

Fortunately, humans in this world were quite resilient, with astonishing recovery rates. After resting for just a few minutes, Silas no longer felt quite so sore.

He patted Snivy on the head. "Snivy, use Grassy Terrain."

"Snivy!"

Snivy tensed up, nodding seriously. She extended her vines and placed them on the Leaf Stone hanging from her neck, closing her eyes to concentrate.

Snivy wasn't strong enough yet to use Grassy Terrain on her own she needed the energy from the Leaf Stone to help cast the move.

After a whole night of training, her release speed had improved significantly.

A few minutes later, a soft green ripple began to radiate from Snivy, spreading over a large area.

Silas sat down beside her, basking in the soothing waves of recovery. It felt incredibly comfortable.

No wonder many researchers believed that humans had evolved from Pokémon. Otherwise, why would a Pokémon's healing move work so well on humans?

Though, the academic community still debated this theory fiercely.

Silas didn't really care. That kind of stuff had nothing to do with him.

"All right. Thanks, little one."

Feeling mostly recovered, Silas thanked Snivy and signaled for her to stop.

Snivy let out a breath and smiled happily when she heard the thanks from her Trainer. She waved her vines to say, "You're welcome."

"All done? Then let's get back to it."

Nobuhiko, watching their interaction, smiled faintly and ruthlessly interrupted the moment.

Silas nodded and resumed sparring with Nobuhiko.

"Control yourself! Don't forget what I just taught you!"

"Feel how your muscles moved in that last motion how they contracted and released."

"The moves aren't the goal; they're just a tool to help you feel. It's not about copying a specific technique—it's about mastering your own body. Feel it!"

Nobuhiko kept shouting corrections and instructions, helping Silas improve bit by bit.

Time ticked by, and eventually, the intense training session came to an end.

Sweat dripped down Silas's face. He felt completely exhausted.

Snivy handed him a towel with her vine, and he wiped himself down vigorously.

"Not bad,"Nobuhiko said, sipping from a water bottle. "You've got decent potential."

"But this is just the beginning. Like I said, our fighting style is a tough one."

Silas gritted his teeth and nodded. This? I can handle this.

Nobuhiko nodded in approval. "You can rest wherever you like. The dojo has a few empty, cleaned-up guest rooms, or you can go back to the Pokémon Center. Up to you."

"But tomorrow morning at five sharp, I want to see you here."

Silas chugged some water and caught his breath. That wasn't a problem. It was only a bit earlier than his usual wake-up time.

"All right, I'm heading to the backyard. First day take it easy for now."

Nobuhiko checked the time and left the room.

Silas dragged his sore body back to the Pokémon Center. He decided to stay there for the night since all his stuff was already there. He'd just bring his space backpack to the dojo in the morning.

He forced himself to eat dinner, fed all four of his Pokémon, and then collapsed into bed, falling into a deep sleep.

Under the moonlight, the four Pokémon in the room instinctively kept quiet, not wanting to disturb Silas. One by one, they all fell asleep too.

The fighting style Nobuhiko belonged to the one Silas had just become a student of was called Severing the Intangible.

It was said that the original founder of the style had used a Scyther. Together, their attacks could cut through anything, even things that were intangible.

The name sounded odd, but it was actually one of the oldest martial styles passed down in the Johto region. And unlike the Genzo Style, this one had never broken its lineage.

The last part was Nobuhiko's own wording. He clearly took pride in it—and even a bit of malicious joy. Silas had almost asked what the Genzo Style even was, but he held back.

The Severing the Intangible style focused on using a strong body as the foundation. From there, one would refine control over their own body, master breathing techniques, and hone their mental focus. Combined with the bond between Trainer and Pokémon, this allowed one to awaken the tiny amounts of dormant energy inside the body.

Once Silas understood it, it didn't feel all that mystical anymore. In fact, it seemed kind of… logical. Which made him wonder if he was going crazy.

"Only by refining the self can one truly connect with a Pokémon that's meant for battle. Only then can you grasp the method to defeat your enemies!"

This was the creed of the style.

The most important aspect: the body.

And Silas's body was impressive enough that even Nobuhiko had openly admitted his envy. In Nobuhiko's words, Silas—at his peak might have physical strength comparable to Bruno.

That was extremely high praise.

However, Silas still lacked skill in the other three key areas.

As for the bond between Trainer and Pokémon, Silas was confident. Every Trainer was.

The techniques Nobuhiko was passing on were built around a series of set movements—designed to train control over the body.

They covered a wide range of disciplines: judo, kendo, aikido, karate, and more.

As they developed physical control, each disciple of the Severing the Intangible style also became a powerful martial artist.

Of course, since a person's energy and focus were limited, most disciples would eventually choose to specialize in one path after mastering the basics. That alone was enough to achieve full-body control.

But those with exceptional talent—like Bruno—had mastered three different martial arts. That allowed him to focus faster in battle and enter the zone quicker, using instinct to outpace opponents.

In high-level battles, even a lead of 0.0005 seconds could determine the outcome.

"Focus... focus…"

Even in his sleep, Silas muttered softly.

His hand twitched and flung off the blanket.

But a moment later, the blanket gently floated back down and covered him again.

Twenty-three days later.

"Hyaah! Ha!"

With a powerful diagonal slash of his blade, Silas cleanly split a thick wooden post straight down the middle.

Silas's mentor, Nobuhiko, stepped forward to examine the cut. After a moment, he gave a slight nod. "Not bad. You've passed the kendo section too."

Silas sheathed his blade and let out a long breath.

He pressed his palms together. "Thank you, Nobuhiko."

Nobuhiko shook his head with a bitter smile. "No need to thank me. You're a monster, you know that?"

He couldn't help but sigh.

Before him stood Silas who had managed to learn all the foundational techniques in just over twenty days.

Originally, Nobuhiko had only expected Silas to learn the bare basics of one discipline just enough not to interfere with his upcoming exams.

But now, Silas's progress had far exceeded his expectations.

You had to understand back in Nobuhiko's own training days, he had spent over four years just to lay down the foundations. Four years!

Is this the difference between a true genius and an ordinary person? Nobuhiko felt a bit dejected.

Granted, training usually sped up once you got past the beginner level, since many of the principles were shared across techniques. Silas's excellent physical condition also gave him a huge advantage. Still, there was no denying his extraordinary talent.

"You're already able to maintain concentration for a while after entering a meditative state. As long as you keep your breathing and posture stable, you can hold that focus."

"The next step is practice lots of it. You need to shorten the time it takes to enter that state, and lengthen how long you can stay in it."

"Also, don't slack on physical training. Otherwise, after just one intense battle, you'll crash from mental and physical exhaustion."

"As for your connection with your Pokémon… that's something only you can figure out."

"If you don't strengthen that bond, your concentration techniques will only be effective up to the level of an Elite Four contender. If you want to break past that, you'll need more."

"Most importantly—when you succeed for the first time, don't try to memorize the process. Let your body naturally adapt to the state. Otherwise, you'll just mess it all up."

Nobuhiko kept going, his words endless. For someone with such a burly and imposing appearance, he was surprisingly meticulous and detail-oriented.

Silas listened attentively and nodded obediently. Even though many of the things Nobuhiko was saying had already been repeated over the past twenty-something days, and even though—technically—Silas outranked him in seniority within their shared lineage, he had developed genuine respect for Nobuhiko after spending so much time together.

"Sigh… that's all I can teach you," Nobuhiko said with a tired sigh. "From here on, it's up to you."

He wasn't new to teaching he'd trained a few students in basic martial arts before but this time had really shown him what people meant when they said, Teach your student too well, and you'll starve your master.

Silas had basically squeezed every last bit of knowledge out of him.

As for experience, everyone walked a different path. Trying to guide Silas further would only hold him back, so Nobuhiko knew it was time to let go.

Silas bowed deeply in respect and gratitude.

He had realized very quickly that his learning ability was far above average. One major reason was his photographic memory even for body movements and mental states.

With set forms and clear results, once he performed a move correctly even once, both his body and mind would memorize it instantly. That's why he could learn so quickly.

"Remember to find time to visit the Cerulean Dojo in Johto," Nobuhiko reminded him as he was leaving. "Master Bruno is the current Gym Leader there. Make sure you formally complete your initiation ceremony."

"Got it! See you next time, Nobuhiko!"

Silas waved goodbye, turning down the road that led out of Saffron City.

Nobuhiko watched his figure slowly disappear into the distance, stretching his arms lazily. I'd better stick to training regular students. Geniuses like him are too much for me.

Teach them slowly, and once they're done, I'll get back to my own training.

With that thought, he turned and walked back into the dojo.
