Silas once again set foot on the path carved out by the Pokémon League.
Crossing over rocks, wading through rivers, and walking through grassy fields, the surrounding environment gradually grew more vibrant and full of life.
Except for that place.
Silas looked toward the distance, where a towering smokestack reached into the sky, constantly emitting thick black smoke.
That was the Tidal Power Plant in Blackcloud City, the largest power station in the Kanto region. It provided electricity to many nearby cities.
It was also because of the plant's existence that numerous factories had sprung up around Blackcloud City. The wastewater and waste discharged by these factories had polluted the skies, rivers, and even the sea.
According to the League's investigation, wild Pokémon had virtually disappeared from the area surrounding Blackcloud City.
Even from far away, Silas could sense the ominous aura radiating from that place.
He silently shook his head and veered slightly off his path, trying to avoid getting too close.
Blackcloud City now bore almost no signs of human habitation. While there was still a Pokémon Center, most Trainers chose to steer clear of the place.
Very few people were willing to endure such a stench—especially since Fuchisa City wasn't far ahead.
Quickening his pace, Silas soon passed through the polluted area.
"Snivy."
On Silas's shoulder, Snivy finally moved its tail away from its face. It had been using it to block the awful smell the whole way. For a Pokémon with a sensitive sense of smell, that journey had been pure torment.
Not long after walking away from the stench, Silas quickly noticed signs of wild Pokémon activity.
"Little one, ready for your first battle?"
Silas turned his head to look at Snivy.
The Pokémon around here were the perfect level for Snivy's first opponent.
"Snivy!"
Snivy let out a spirited cry.
Silas tossed out a Poké Ball containing his Boldore.
"I'll leave the scouting to you," he said.
Boldore responded with a low rumble and began emitting a soft yellow glow, sensing its surroundings.
"Boldore!"
Boldore signaled that it had found Snivy a suitable first opponent.
The trio quickly approached it—a wild Magnemite.
A great match. Grass-type versus Electric-type. Even with less experience and a gap in level, Snivy could still come out on top.
"Snivy, use Wrap!"
Silas commanded Snivy, who had just climbed down from his shoulder.
Suddenly, a vine shot up from the ground beneath the wild Magnemite and coiled tightly around it.
"Magnemite!"
The wild Magnemite cried out, flustered.
As a genderless, inorganic Pokémon, wild Pokémon usually left it alone unless it caused trouble first. Rarely would it be ambushed like this.
It was utterly confused. Its small mind swirled with questions.
But instinctively, its body began to rise off the ground, struggling against the vines.
Magnemite's body consisted of a round sphere with a single large eye, horseshoe-shaped magnets on either side with opposing poles, and several screws attached.
All of its parts could rotate freely.
By generating electromagnetic waves from its side magnets, it could nullify gravity and levitate in the air.
Usually, it would rest on the ground when idle which was why it had just been caught off guard and ensnared by Snivy's Wrap.
As Magnemite struggled to free itself, Snivy gritted its teeth and focused, trying to maintain control of the vines.
"Hold it for two seconds, then release! Follow up with Vine Whip and Tackle!" Silas instructed sharply.
Snivy nodded.
At the perfect moment, the vine loosened, and Magnemite shot upward like a spring.
Snivy immediately lunged forward. Using its Vine Whip to push off the ground, it jumped into the air and crashed hard into Magnemite.
"Magnemite!"
The wild Pokémon was slammed into a nearby tree.
Bright yellow electricity began to gather around its body. A bolt of lightning surged toward Snivy after it charged up.
Snivy stared wide-eyed, panic rising as it froze.
"Vine Whip block it!"
Silas's voice rang out, and Snivy reflexively raised both vines in front of itself.
The electric current burst through the gaps in the vines a moment later.
Snivy let out a small cry, but fortunately, Electric-type moves didn't deal much damage to Grass-types. It still had plenty of stamina left.
At that moment, Magnemite was hovering shakily in the air, furious and preparing to strike back at the green Pokémon before it.
"Vine Whip! Target the connection points between its magnets slam it into the ground!"
Silas quickly adjusted his command, providing Snivy with a clear step-by-step instruction.
This was his first time not raising a Pokémon from the very beginning.
His previous partners had been trained in combat habits from a very young age, so they understood his commands naturally. But Snivy clearly wasn't used to it yet.
Snivy nodded. Its vines extended from both sides of its body, coiling around the base of Magnemite's magnets, and with a powerful pull—
Magnemite, still building up another Electric-type move, suddenly felt its weight disappear.
"Magnemite!"
It cried out in surprise as pain jolted through its body.
Snivy swung Magnemite up and slammed it into the ground again and again with precise, repeated strikes.
Before long, Magnemite's eyes turned into dizzy spira"Snivy," the little Grass-type responded softly.
Snivy narrowed its eyes contentedly, enjoying the praise from its Trainer.
Though it also acknowledged that it was partly its fault—using Vine Whip to block an Electric attack straight-on would've worked better than just shielding blindly.
Boldore used its power over sand and stone to gently place an Oran Berry next to the fallen Magnemite.
Silas picked up Snivy and stroked its head. "Nice job. That last command was my mistake."
"Snivy."
"Boldore, let's keep going."
Silas gave Snivy an Oran Berry as well to restore some energy, then turned to his rock-type partner.
Since they hadn't built perfect coordination yet, Silas figured they'd polish it up through continuous battles. By the time they reached Fuchisa City, they'd probably be in sync.
Boldore silently led the way again it had already found their next opponent.
And so began a rather painful period for the local wild Pokémon.
A human, accompanied by a green snake Pokémon, systematically challenged and defeated them one by one.
Some Pokémon, angry after being provoked and beaten, ran to get their parents for help.
But when they did, that human simply released a Pidgeot and the entire family got blown away together.
The once quiet forest turned chaotic, filled with cries and scuffles. Only when the sun began to set did peace slowly return.
Outside Fuchisa City.
Silas took a deep breath as he gazed at the peaceful and serene city before him.
The air here was so much better than in that forest.
He had already returned Boldore to its Poké Ball.
"Little one, you'll be able to rest soon."
Snivy, perched on his shoulder, weakly nodded. The afternoon of constant battling had exhausted it—physically and mentally.
Silas chuckled. Snivy really did have great potential, and their bond had clearly strengthened through all those fights.
Snivy was already responding smoothly to his simplified commands now.
After arriving at the Fuchisa City Pokémon Center, he handed Snivy and Boldore over to Nurse Joy for treatment.
Boldore was tired too scouting out wild Pokémon took quite a bit of energy.
Ding-ling-ling!
Suddenly, the door to the Pokémon Center was flung open.
"Nurse Joy! Please heal my Pokémon!"
A girl's voice echoed through the room.
Some of the Trainers nearby turned to look, surprised. Others seemed completely used to it.
"Janine, how many times do I have to tell you—keep your voice down inside the Pokémon Center," one of the Joys said with a sigh.
"Hehe!" The girl named Janine stuck out her tongue. "Got it, I'll remember next time!"
"When have you ever remembered?"
Another Nurse Joy got up and took the Poké Balls from Janine's hands.
Silas's eyes suddenly widened in shock.
"Okay okay, I get it~ Next time I'll definitely behave, Green-Sis~" Janine said as she clung to the Nurse Joy playfully.
The Joy apparently nicknamed "Green"—tapped her on the forehead with a mildly annoyed look, then walked into the treatment room with a Chansey.
"What?" Janine glanced at the stunned Silas and raised an eyebrow. "Green-Sis's hair is green what's so weird about that?"
"Uh… it's just my first time seeing it," Silas admitted honestly.
He hadn't been shocked by the loud entrance but rather by the fact that one of the Nurse Joys had green hair!
Among the Joys, that wasn't just rare it was practically unheard of!
"Tch, country bumpkin."
Janine didn't bother explaining further and turned to walk away.
"She's always like that. Don't take it personally. And as for Green, it's due to a physical condition," another Nurse Joy explained kindly to Silas.
"No, I'm the one who was rude." Silas bowed slightly in apology.
"It's perfectly normal. Everyone's surprised the first time they see her," several Nurse Joys said, chuckling. It was one of the little joys in their otherwise routine work.
Every Trainer who arrived in Fuchisa City for the first time had the same reaction.
"Janine, still training hard every day to become a Gym Leader, huh?" a group of Trainers clearly locals teased as Whitney sat nearby.
"Of course!" Janine said proudly, holding her head high.
"Hey, do you guys know where that guy came from?" she asked, gesturing toward Silas as she spoke with the familiar group.
"That good-looking kid? No idea, but he's got a Pokédex. What, are you into him already?" a middle-aged Trainer teased.
He'd known Janine since she was little and now even his own kid seemed to be crushing on her?
"No, I'm just curious, jeez. Act your age, old man."
Janine rolled her eyes and shot him a look.
"Bwahahaha!" The entire group burst out laughing.
A short distance away, Silas glanced over curiously. Are all the people in Fuchisa this laid-back?
Janine had asked quietly, and the Pokémon Center was kind of noisy, so he hadn't caught what she said.
"Hey! Pretty boy! Wanna come over and hang out?"
A man in a typical Trainer's outfit called out to Silas, ignoring Janine's attempt to stop him.
