Raine woke up with a sharp jolt as her feet touched the cold floor of the Sanctuary. Her stomach twisted painfully, and her head spun like she had just stepped off a fast ride.
A bitter taste rose in her throat. She choked, trying hard not to throw up.
Why does it always feel like this?
She waited, hoping to feel her mother's hand rubbing her back like always. But nothing came. No warmth, no comfort. Just silence.
She quickly pressed a hand over her mouth and stood up, thinking she could at least get some water.
Before she could take a step, a strong arm wrapped tightly around her waist, pulling her back against a firm chest.
Cole's voice snapped from behind her, "You're finally awake? Where is Kieran?"
She blinked, confused. What did he mean by that?
But she couldn't focus. Her stomach was still rolling. She gagged again, her throat burning.
Then Cole's hand moved gently around her neck—not to hurt her, but to help.
