Chapter 246 - Chapter 245: The Sound of Silence

---

The excitement from Naruto's victory still hung in the air, a buzzing energy that had the crowd leaning forward in their seats.

"Next match!" Genma Shiranui shouted, checking his watch. "Sasuke Uchiha vs. Gaara of the Sand!"

Gaara was already there, having walked down the stairs with a slow, menacing gait. He stood with his arms crossed, sand leaking from his gourd like dry blood.

But the other side of the arena was empty.

"Sasuke Uchiha!" Genma called again.

Silence.

"Is he late?" a spectator whispered loudly. "Just like that blonde kid?"

"Maybe he got scared?" another laughed. "Facing that monster from Suna? I'd be scared too."

Genma frowned, looking up at the VIP box. Standard protocol dictated immediate disqualification. But this was the Uchiha... the last loyal one, anyway. And the feudal lords were here specifically to see the Sharingan.

Hiruzen met Genma's gaze. He held up a hand, fingers spread, and then made a subtle 'pushing' motion. Postpone.

Genma nodded slightly. He turned to the crowd.

"Due to the absence of a contestant," Genma announced, his voice amplified, "this match will be postponed and moved to the end of the roster. We will proceed to the next bout."

A groan of disappointment swept through the stadium, but it was quickly replaced by curiosity as the board flickered.

Shino Aburame vs. Haku Yuki

"Will the contestants please enter the arena!"

---The VIP Box---

As Haku walked calmly down the stairs, his movements graceful and silent, Hiruzen turned to the man leaning against the wall.

"Alaric," Hiruzen asked, watching the boy in the teal kimono. "I know you took him out of the village for a month. What exactly did you teach him? Shino is a formidable opponent from the Aburame clan. Their insects are difficult to counter."

Alaric tapped the ash from his cigar over the railing, watching his student with a bored expression.

"I didn't teach him how to beat Shino," Alaric replied casually. "I taught him how to ignore the concept of difficulty."

He smirked. "If you put that boy in a Jonin exam right now... he would pass with flying colors. Maybe even set a record."

Hiruzen's eyes widened slightly. "A Jonin exam? You place that much faith in him?"

Beside Hiruzen, the "Kazekage" let out a dry, rattling chuckle.

"Jonin?" Rasa scoffed, shaking his head. "Confidence is good for a mentor, but arrogance can get a student killed. The jump from Chunin to Jonin is a chasm, not a step."

"That could be true," Alaric shrugged, not bothering to look at the snake in disguise. "Or maybe you've just forgotten what true talent looks like."

---The Arena---

Haku and Shino stood five meters apart.

"I am Shino Aburame," the bug-user said, his voice monotone, hidden behind his high collar and sunglasses. "I have analyzed your fight with Misumi. You are a mid-range specialist who uses ice mirrors. I have already formulated a counter."

Haku bowed politely. "I am Haku Yuki. It is an honor."

"..."

Seeing that the two were in their spots, Genma nodded. "Well... Hajime!" He shouted, stepping back.

"..."

"..."

Neither moved.

The wind blew through the arena, kicking up a small cloud of dust.

"Aburame-san," Haku spoke, his voice soft but carrying clearly in the silence. "Before we start... if I end this too quickly, please do not harbor any hard feelings."

Shino tilted his head slightly, confused by the statement. "Hard feelings? A shinobi accepts the outcome of battle. Why would I harbor resentment?"

"So you promise?" Haku pressed gently. "No grudges?"

"...I promise," Shino stated logically. "Now, prepare yourself."

Haku sighed in genuine relief, his shoulders relaxing. "Good. I didn't want to offend a fellow shinobi."

"What the hell? How arrogant!" a spectator shouted from the stands.

"Who does this pretty boy think he is?"

"Shino! Fill him with bugs!" Kiba yelled from the crowd.

Shino raised his hands. From beneath his sleeves, a swarm of kikaichū beetles began to buzz, pouring out like a black mist.

"Parasitic Insects: Swar-"

ZIP.

There was no sound of footsteps. No gathered chakra for a jump.

One moment, Haku was standing five meters away. The next moment, the space where he stood was empty.

Shino's eyes behind his sunglasses widened. He didn't see him move. He didn't even see a blur.

Tap.

Shino felt a cold, gentle touch on the back of his neck.

"Sleep," Haku's voice whispered, directly behind his ear.

THWACK.

A precise, surgical chop to the vagus nerve.

Shino's eyes rolled back. The swarm of bugs, losing their command signal, buzzed confusedly for a second before retracting into his coat. Shino crumbled forward, hitting the dirt face-first without ever knowing what happened.

The entire exchange had taken less than a tenth of a second.

The aftermath?

The stadium was dead silent.

Thousands of people stared at the arena floor, their brains struggling to process the visual information. To the civilians and Genin, Haku had simply teleported.

In the VIP box, Hiruzen's pipe nearly fell from his mouth. He leaned forward, gripping the railing.

"Fast..." Hiruzen whispered. "I... I barely tracked that."

Rasa (Orochimaru) was frozen. His golden eyes were dilated. That wasn't a Body Flicker. That was pure physical speed. He moved faster than the eye could register. A Genin? No... that is speed that almost rivals the Raikage's armor.

Alaric chuckled, the sound echoing in the silent box. "Told you."

Down in the arena, Genma Shiranui stood with his mouth slightly open, the senbon nearly falling out. He looked at Shino, then at Haku, who was standing there adjusting his gloves as if he had just finished picking a flower.

"Uhh..." Genma blinked, shaking his head to clear the shock.

He rushed over to Shino, checking for a pulse. Strong. Just unconscious.

Genma stood up and raised his hand, his voice wavering slightly.

"Winner... Haku Yuki!"

There were no cheers. No applause. Just a stunned, heavy silence as the audience tried to understand if they had missed something. Was it Genjutsu? Was it a trick?

Haku didn't wait for adulation. He bowed once to the unconscious Shino, then turned and walked calmly back toward the contestant stairs.

'Too fast?' Haku wondered as he walked. 'I only used about 40% of my burst acceleration. Perhaps I should have slowed down to make it entertaining.'

As Haku disappeared into the tunnel, the crowd finally began to murmur, a low wave of shock and fear rippling through the stands. They realized they weren't watching a tournament anymore. They were watching predators play with food.

Genma exhaled a long breath, signaling the medics to retrieve Shino. He needed a drink after this.

"Alright..." Genma shouted, trying to bring the energy back. "Let's keep moving! Next match!"

The board flickered.

Shikamaru Nara vs. Temari
