Cherreads

Chapter 247 - Chapter 246: Chirping Birds

---

Konoha Stadium - The Arena Floor

The shadow of the cloud moved, and the paralysis jutsu held firm. Temari was caught, her fan useless, her body locked in Shikamaru's shadow bind. She gritted her teeth, sweating, waiting for the final blow.

Shikamaru sighed, looking up at the clouds. He raised his hand.

"I give up."

The silence in the arena was deafening. Then, a collective groan of disbelief washed over the crowd.

"Haaaah!?" Naruto screamed from the stands. "What are you doing, Shikamaru!?"

"Boooo! Coward!"

"You had her! Finish it!"

Shikamaru scratched his head, releasing the jutsu. "I'm almost out of chakra. I've thought about the next two hundred moves, and I lose in all of them. Besides... this is drag."

As the crowd jeered, throwing popcorn and insults, the Jonin in the stands watched with different expressions. Asuma lit a cigarette, grinning proudly. Kurenai nodded.

In the VIP box, Hiruzen puffed on his pipe, a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes.

"He assessed the situation, trapped a superior long-range opponent, and retreated when his resources were depleted," Hiruzen noted. "He prioritized the mission objective... survival and intelligence gathering... over glory."

"He's a genius who hates working hard," Alaric added, leaning on the railing. He watched Shikamaru slouch back to the stairs. "If that kid actually put in the effort to train his body, he'd be terrifying. But I suppose that laziness is part of his charm."

Hiruzen chuckled. "Indeed. The Nara clan has always been... energy efficient."

---

Genma Shiranui stepped forward, the crowd's frustration still lingering. He needed to wake them up.

"Alright, settle down!" Genma shouted. He looked at the empty side of the arena. "Next match! Sasuke Uchiha vs. Gaara of the Sand!"

Gaara was already standing there. He hadn't moved since the postponement. He was just vibrating with a low, menacing chakra.

"Sasuke Uchiha!"

A swirl of leaves gathered in the center of the arena. The wind picked up.

Whoosh.

Sasuke Uchiha appeared. He was dressed in a black romper, his arms wrapped in bandages. His posture was different... relaxed, yet coiled like a spring.

"Sorry I'm late," Sasuke said coolly.

The crowd erupted. The jeers vanished instantly, replaced by the roar of thousands chanting the Uchiha name.

In the VIP box, "Rasa's" eyes widened. He leaned forward, his tongue darting out to wet his lips behind his veil.

'There he is,' Orochimaru thought, a shiver of anticipation running down his spine. 'My vessel. He looks... magnificent.'

Hiruzen noticed the Kazekage's reaction. He exchanged a brief, knowing glance with Alaric. He's taking the bait.

"Begin!"

Gaara didn't wait. "Mother wants your blood."

A wave of sand surged forward.

Sasuke moved.

He didn't use Ninjutsu. He didn't use Genjutsu. He simply vanished.

BAM.

A kick connected with Gaara's shield, shattering the outer layer of sand. Sasuke touched down and moved again, circling Gaara with blinding speed.

In the waiting area, Haku leaned against the wall, his eyes tracking the movement.

'He is fast,' Haku analyzed. 'He is mimicking Rock Lee's taijutsu style. But he lacks Lee's raw explosive power and literal speed. Still... for a standard shinobi, this is impressive.'

Sasuke ducked under a sand spike and delivered a spinning heel kick to Gaara's face. The sand shield barely rose in time.

"Not enough," Sasuke whispered.

He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second.

Fwoosh.

Black, flame-like markings spread from the seal on his neck. But unlike the forest, Sasuke didn't scream. His chakra didn't turn vile. It stabilized. The purified Curse Mark activated, pumping senjutsu-enhanced chakra into his muscles.

Sasuke's speed doubled.

CRACK!

He punched through the sand shield. His fist connected with Gaara's cheek.

Gaara stumbled back, his armor cracking, his eyes wide with shock. "You... you hit me?"

"I'm just getting started," Sasuke smirked, the black markings glowing faintly against his pale skin.

Up in the box, Orochimaru was practically vibrating. 'He's controlling it! The seal... it's not eroding his mind! How!?' He glared at Alaric's back. 'That man... what did he do to my mark!?'

The fight raged on. Gaara retreated into his Sphere of Sand, forming a perfect, impenetrable dome. Spikes shot out randomly to keep Sasuke at bay.

"He's hiding," Naruto yelled. "Get him, Sasuke!"

Sasuke jumped back, landing on the high arena wall. He stood perpendicular to the ground, staring at the sand sphere.

"If I can't break it with force," Sasuke muttered, "I'll pierce it."

He began to weave hand signs. Ox. Rabbit. Monkey.

He gripped his left wrist with his right hand.

Chirp... chirp...

Sparks of blue lightning began to dance around his fingers. The sound grew louder.

CHIRPCHIRPCHIRP.

It sounded like a thousand birds screaming in unison. The chakra was so dense it was visible to the naked eye... a blade of pure lightning.

"That chakra..." Guy muttered in the stands. "Kakashi, you taught him that?"

"He has the affinity," Kakashi replied, his eye fixed on his student.

Haku watched from below. 'A thrusting technique maximizing penetration power. Lightning Release to vibrate through the earth-based sand. If he maintains velocity... he has a chance.'

Sasuke crouched. The Curse Mark flared, boosting his leg strength.

"CHIDORI!"

Sasuke launched himself. He tore down the wall, the ground cracking beneath his feet as he sprinted across the arena floor. The lightning in his hand screamed.

Gaara's sand reacted, rising to block him.

Too slow.

Sasuke plunged the lightning blade forward.

SQUELCH.

The sound of electricity meeting sand and flesh echoed through the stadium. Sasuke's arm was buried deep inside the sphere.

Everything stopped.

Sasuke gritted his teeth, feeling the resistance giving way to something wet.

Inside the sphere, Gaara's eyes widened. He looked down at his shoulder. Blood. Red, warm blood.

"My... blood?"

Sasuke yanked his hand back. Blood sprayed onto the sand.

"AAAAAHHHHHHHHH!"

A scream of pure, unadulterated madness erupted from the sphere. It wasn't human. It was the shriek of a demon waking up.

"BLOOD! MY BLOOD!"

Within the sphere, a monstrous arm... made of sand and violet chakra... began to form. The One-Tail was stirring.

High in the stands, a hooded figure wearing Anbu porcelain pushed his glasses up his nose. Kabuto Yakushi smiled.

"And that," Kabuto whispered, "is the cue."

He wove a hand sign.

Temple of Nirvana Technique.

White feathers began to fall from the sky, drifting softly over the audience. Civilians and weak genin began to slump over, falling into a deep, magical sleep.

In the VIP box, "Rasa" stood up abruptly.

"Make your move," he commanded.

He grabbed Hiruzen from behind, a kunai pressed to the Hokage's throat. Simultaneously, four Sound Ninja appeared on the roof corners, erecting a purple barrier.

BOOM!

A massive explosion rocked the village gates. A giant snake summoned by the Sand Ninja crashed through the outer wall.

"The invasion..." Alaric took the cigar out of his mouth, watching the chaos unfold with a calm, detached gaze.

He looked at the barrier forming around them.

"Has begun."
