Chapter 17 - Leaving the mall

As the sun rose from the east, Brayden welcomed another day, albeit all that could be seen was pure chaos.

The occasional sounds of gunshots reminded anyone still alive of the horror that had befallen them.

Inside a virtual reality gaming shop a small group of five could be seen hiding there. They all had bloodshot eyes, a clear sign of lack of proper sleep.

Well all except for one of them who looked like just like nothing was wrong, in fact he even had a faint smile on his face as he stared at the ground below.

 "Another beautiful day ."

Naturally this group was none other than Dante and the others.

The others in the room instinctively felt like beating him up at the same time when they heard him however they couldn't do a thing to him especially when they remembered last night's events.

After they had escaped from the horde of zombies they followed Susan over to the cinema only to discover that it already had some people hiding in there.

As you might have guessed they weren't able to enter the place as they were refused entry leaving them to the wrath of the approaching horde.

Luckily they were able to find a gaming shop and there they hid till the next morning. Right now they were fathering everything they could pick in preparation to leave.

Unlike the others that were busy with their preparations Dante's eyebrows were arched in pleasant surprise as he looked at the system interface.

His points had shot up to a staggering three thousand points!

While most of it was due to the zombies he killed a huge chunk still came from that Killmonger.

 "Not bad!"

Nodding he proceeded to check the rest of the notifications.

The power armour was basically scrap at the moment. For it to be able to work he needed to do a complete repair. Unfortunately, there was no time for that meaning he was essentially defenseless.

The Resonant chain blade was still as good as new while he still had a over a dozen electromagnetic grenades.

Talking about the electromagnetic grenades he hadn't found the chance to use them however that wouldn't be the same for much longer as they would soon leave the mall.

Currently they were on the west wing of the second plaza which coincidentally was one of the exits leading to the ground floor.

If they moved fast enough they should be able to reach the campus central research lab before evening and he would finally be able to get the item that made him come here in the first place.

 "Hehe….finally I'll be able to..Arrgh!"

Right then a head suddenly appeared over his shoulder causing him to immediately whip out the Resonant chain blade.

 "Boss wait it's me!"

Hearing the familiar voice the blade halted a few inches away from stabbing into Jason's head.

Seeing the quivering blade he involuntarily let out a sigh of relief. He had almost died!

"Next time try not to just pop up on people like that!"

Glaring at Jason, Dante kept the Resonant chain blade while standing up.

At the same time Susan looked as if she had made a decision as she walked up to Dante and Jason.

 "So you've made a decision?"

Looking at Dante a look of resolution flashed through Susan's eyes as she nodded.

"I've decided to follow you guys!"

Looking at the baseball bat and the bag strapped on her back Dante wondered if he hadn't heard well. Seeing the surprised look on his face she proceeded with her explanation.

" Waiting for the military is not optimistic for me as who knows when they would eventually come. I'm better off finding my way rather than staying here."

 True…"

Nodding he felt that it was perfectly normal. The chance of the military coming here was very small. Even if they did come who knew if they would still be alive then.

 But then…

"What about you guys you're aren't coming along?"

Turning to the other two girls he asked. According to his thoughts they were friends with Susan and she seemed to be a leader of sorts to them.

 "Well we decided to stay."

Taking a deep breath the two looked at each other before one of the stepped forward. He recognized her as Tes while the other was Shirley.

Hearing, this Dante respected their choices. It wasn't everybody that had the guts to face the apocalypse head on like Susan or Jason.

Their survival depended on their luck.

After giving them some weapons and food they left and made their way to the ground floor avoiding the zombies as much as they could.

Those they couldn't avoid were quickly dispatched by Jason and Susan. This surprised Dante a lot as the two had quickly adapted to the status quo. .

Remembering how he had not even found his footing after a week in the previous apocalypse he couldn't help but feel embarrassed.

Right then he suddenly remembered something.

"Hey system, saving all these people counts as working on the quest right even if they decided to stay back?"

There was a short silence before the system replied.

[Yes..]

Hurriedly he checkd the progress bar of the sub-quest and truly there was a change. However, his eyes couldn't help but twitch involuntarily.

 [Progress: 0.0000000001%]

 "The hell?"

Looking at the number that seemed to beocking him he couldn't help but feel a huge headache coming on. If saving four people only brought this tiny change to the progress bar he couldn't imagine how much longer it would take to complete the main quest.

In fact he had a hunch that the the number shown there was just to make him feel good.

The future was going to be—tiring.

He was still thinking about how the quest was going to take forever when suddenly they stopped. Since he was in charge of protecting their rear he was at the back of the group.

It turned out that they had arrived at the underground parking lot. However the whole place was teeming with zombies contrary to their initial thoughts. At a glance they were nearly half the horde from yesterday.

 "Quick hide!"

Immediately, they all ran behind the supporting pillars.

Sneaking a peak from the pillar he was hiding behind, Dante felt his headache increasing. Things weren't going according to plan.

The number of zombies was far more than he had accounted for. While they were not that much and could be easily killed the noise from killing them was the main thing he was worried about.

They were already close to the outside world and who knew how many more zombies would be attracted inside.

 VROOOOM!!!

As he was thinking about how to distract the zombies he suddenly heard a faint sound

which soon turned into the revving of a motorcycles engine.

 Instantly his expression warped.

 "Not again please!"
