Chapter 16 - A necessary sacrifice.

With the apocalypse's descent the whole world had been thrown into turmoil.

No one could have imagined that one moment they were going about their normal lives while the next they would be witnessing hell on Earth.

 Yes hell!

If not hell there was no other explanation to describe the portals that tore they sky asunder releasing various abominations towards Earth.

The entire world watched in horror as various freak accidents occured planes crashing into populated zones and random accidents happening everywhere. The whole world had suddenly gone chaotic after the sky shattered.

The craziest part was when the supposedly dead people stood up and started to kill those who tried to rescue others bringing the terror to an entire new level.

Against the strong and powerful zombies few were able to escape and the world soon descended into utter chaos as people ran for their lives.

In less than 24 hours the world was overrun by these zombies.

This day would forever be remembered.

*********

 Brayden city...

 Archeon bridge...

 "FALL BACK FALL BACK!"

"Generals orders! Go, go, go! They're sending birds to the bridge in the next five minutes."

On the wide Archeon bridge that led i to Braydon a bunch of soldiers could be seen fighting against a horde of zombies that stretched down the whole street.

Burning vehicles could be seen all around acting as obstacles of sorts thus slowing the zombies down. This however was useless as the zombie's simply used their sheer numbers to push through the obstacles.

 BOOM!

"Who used a fucking grenade! I said fall back you idiots! This mission is over!"

Hearing the fury in their commander's the soldiers reluctantly glanced at the buildings in the distance while clenching their fists.

There were still people in those buildings, were they going to just abandon them?!

Despite their reluctance they were helpless as going against the order was the same as insurbodination.

However there would still be some outliers.

"Sir, I refuse there are still civilians in that place. If we abandon them we would have failed at our duty!"

Looking at the young soldier who stepped out the commander snarled in anger.

"Are you the commander or I am? I call the shots over here not you! Follow orders!"

 "Commander I'd rather die!"

He was already having an headache getting his men to safety in the first place and he wants even prepared for another one despite that though he understood the reason behind the young soldier's actions.

He had once been like him but now was not the time for that.

Glancing at two other soldiers they quickly moved behind the youth disarming him. Before he could react the butt of a gun had already slammed into his head knocking him unconscious.

"Bundle him up I don't have time for this. We move two minutes!"

"Yes sir!"

Soon they arrived at the bridge. The skies had just begun to show a slight hint of purple, it was already morning.

As the last of the soldiers entered the helicopters the commander also entered his while looking at the burning city a cigarette hanging from his lips.

As a commander who had served in different wars it was hard for any scene to shake him.

He had seen battlefields that were unimaginable to the average human, watched his comrades die and also nearly died himself.

However none of them could compare to this.

This was simply a purgatory from hell. For the first time in his entire years of service he felt a feeling of helpless he had forgotten.

Throwing out the cigarette he pressed the red button in his hand while muttering.

 "May God help us all!"

 BOOM!

BOOM!

BOOM!

The Archeon bridge that led to Braydon blew up as he detonated the explosive charges they had placed on it. While he knew that he was dooming the fate of those in the city there was nothing he could do as leaving the bridge meant that the zombies could leave the city which wasn't acceptable.

Watching the collapsing bridge as the helicopters flew away the commander threw the detonator into the sea.

 **************

On the other side of the Archeon bridge a makeshift settlement could be seen bustling with soldiers and civilians alike.

Countless tents could be seen although there was a clear demarcation between the military and the civilians.

Inside the largest tent a group of men could be seen seated round a table.

Pick any of the individuals here and you would have someone who could shake Brayden to it's roots.

The atte tuon of these powerful men was currently on the screen displaying the Archeon bridge as it's crumbled into the sea below.

When the bridge finally collapsed, nearly all the the men heaved a sigh of relief.

"Thank goodness they moved on time haha! Now we're perfectly safe from those abominations!"

" Minister Jerry I have to say your foresight is incredible. Of not for you pushing the matter those soldiers would have never done the needful!"

The man called Minister Jerry was a middle aged man with brown hair and a dignified appearance. He had an elder next door look to him making him look extremely affable at first sight.

However those who knew him knew that he was a shrewd scheming politician who would never hesitate to push for something as long as it benefitted him regrdless of the consequence to others.

"I was just trying to do my best, it's a pity that we had to leave some people behind but it's a necessary sacrifice…sigh I wish I could have saved more people."

With a sad expression on his face Minister Jerry looked downcast.

 "Minister what are you saying!"

" You did the absolute right thing! Am not even sure if anybody could have done better than you."

 "Of course…"

Hearing the replies, a smug smile rose to his face though he quickly hid it while maintaining the sympathetic expression. He knew that all these were pretences to get in his good books but who cared.

To him they were just pawns to advance his plans.

 "JEREMIAH!"

Right then a commotion rose from outside and before they could do a thing a huge man stormed inside with fury in his face.

For any one to be able to enter the main tent like that they had to be someone important and truly this was someone important, in fact he was a. Equal to the authority Minister Jerry possessed.

 This man was General Mathers!

 "What did you just do?"

Squeezing every word out of his teeth the man glared at Minister Jerry with unbridled fury in his eyes.

With a calm gaze, Minister Jerry shook his head while sighing again.

"General Mathers, I know you're angry but I did it for the greater good. Isn't it better to sacrifice some people for the survival of others,no?"

"Survival of others? You bastard! We still have over a third of the population awaiting evacuation!"

Glaring at the Minister General Mathers nearly went crazy. As a soldier he was duty bound to protect not abandon. Another thing was that his only son was still in that place!

Still maintaining his calm gaze, Minister Jerry simply said.

"I only made a necessary sacrifice and I believe you would have done the same or isn't that the oath you took?"

Hearing this General Mathers gaze trembled as he felt something shatter in him. He knew what the minister was driving at, he knew that his son was still in Brayden. Yes he took the oath, but not like this. Unfortunately the deed was done already.

 "Well done Jeremiah,well done."

 W

ith shoulders slumped General Mathers walked out of the tent while looking in the direction of Brayden city.

 "Jason….. I'm sorry."
