Kai's POV
Jarvis's arms were still around me, his stupid, quiet apology still hanging in the air like a rope. But forgiving him felt like the wrong thing...for Marie.
But sitting here with him... somehow gave me the ground I was looking for to stand on.
I pulled away, wiping my muddy hands on my already ruined gown. The fabric of the expensive dress felt wrong. Just like everything else.
Just like going to Marie again to tell her that I ruined the dress she forced on me. Like admitting that Jarvis was right all along about me being wrong for Jack.
"I can't..." I prayed with my thumb. "I can't read or write. I...hmm I can't read the welcome speech Marie gave me because I can't...read"
Jarvis was the last person I should be telling but I told him anyway.
"Guess you were right," I said, my voice flat. Lifeless. Like Marie's had been.
