June 20, 1996. 1700 (5pm), IFOR HQ, Major Tiff's office. Silence reigned. Major Tiff broke that silence. "OK. We now possibly know why Voldemort wants the Ambassador. How did they find out you were going to be at those talks?" the Major asked the Ambassador. "The wizard we interrogated said they scryed for us" chipped in Evan. The Major looked a bit confused so Hermione pitched in (Madam Bones had just taken a breath and was about to speak when Hermione's 'enthusiasm' took over.) "Scrying is a form of esoteric magic like…fortune telling, or reading of Tarot Cards." "That is a simplistic but adequate description" Madam Bones pitched in. "But, just to be on the safe side, lets just check something" she continued, taking out her wand. Evan, Midshipman Fenix, stepped between Madam Bones and the Ambassador. "With all due respect, Madam Bones. We have been tasked to protect the Ambassador. I say this with the greatest of respect and revere for you – please, before you cast a spell, ask the Ambassador." Madam Bones looked at the Midshipman. They had history. He looked generally disarming, an 18 year old. She chuckled. Madam Bones was about to comment on what he, a muggle, could do if she wanted to cast a spell, but then remembered the 20 wizards he took down single handedly when they first met – he had barely any training then. She remembered the last wizard (and two vampires) who had just the same assumption. Now he was fully trained…fully lethal. She looked him in the eye, seeing the steely resolve, and nodded. "My apologies, Madam Ambassador. I would like to cast a spell on you to reveal any other spells that may be on your person".
The Ambassador acquiesced. Madam Bones cast her spell, and the Ambassador lit up like a Christmas tree. "What do these lights mean?" asked the Ambassador. "The yellow ones are listening spells; the blue ones are tracking spells; the golden ones are compulsion spells; and this green one is for scrying. What I don't understand is why they were having trouble finding you?" Madam Bones commented. "That is easy enough to answer, Madam Bones." Responded Midshipman Fenix – Hermione's and my friend, Dobby has been helping to …'watch over us' since I reunited with the team, after the botched meeting." He said. "Dobby? The one who brought you the portkey?" Madam Bones asked. "The same." He replied. "He takes orders from you?" she shot back. "Well, I don't really order him. I just ask him if he could help us. He said yes". "And he is Hermione's?" Madam Bones asked. "That is another long 'Harry Potter' story, Madam Bones. The short of it is that Harry saved Dobby. Dobby bonded with Harry. Before going to trial, Harry asked Dobby and another friend to watch over me, to keep me safe. So, Dobby is essentially mine, but listens to Midshipman Fenix here because I really like him, and he is very important to me." Hermonie chimed in.
"Next question then – how did they know to show up here? Now? Madam Bones provided the portkey – how did they know to show up when they did, when the team arrived?" asked the Major. "Didn't that wizard say he knew the Ambassador was escorted by British soldiers?" asked McCormick. "They knew she was coming from Bosnia. We are the main IFOR base with British soldiers. You think they might have these spells around here?" asked McCormick. "That is a great observation" said Madam Bones. "Maybe Dobby can help us?" Hermione piped in. "He is great at finding those. The Headmaster, and Professor Snape were always trying to tag me with all kinds of spells. Dobby used to find them and remove them for me." She added. Madam Bones looked flabbergasted. "Yes, I suppose he could" she said. Hermione softly called out "Dobby?" Dobby popped next to Hermione. "Can Dobby bees of help?" "Hi, Dobby." Then she quickly hugged him, and held him out at arm's length. "Thank you for watching over Evan!" she said emotionally, and moved in for another hug. While in the hug, and speaking quietly, she continued "Dobby. We think there may be listening spells or other spells around camp, maybe in the Major's office. Can you find them and tell us who put them there? Is there another wizard here?" Dobby responded, equally quiet, "Master Birdy can tell about wizard. Iz be finding spells". "Dobby decided to give you the task of seek" Hermione said, turning her head to look at Evan. In the meantime, Dobby snapped his fingers and several points around the office lit. Dobby then wiggled his fingers a bit. Evan turned to McCormick – "keep your eyes open and weapon at the down ready. This could go down quickly" he whispered. Evan closed his eyes and sent out his Haragei. (usually, when standed down, Evan reduced his lateral extent of Haragei.) He knew how wizards felt – he had two witches next to him. He knew, while in the Dining Hall (after their initial arrival), there were none other than Madam Bones and Hermione. He continued pushing Haragei out; past the offices, past the Dining Hall, into the dormitory area, to the armory area, to the helipad and finally, to the outer edges of base. While doing this, his eyes closed, his body and being were at peace. With the exception of Dobby, all eyes were on him. He felt a bit of magic hit him as he was coming out of his scan. He had found his prey. Opening one eye, he looked at Madam Bones. "I understand what and why you did what you just did, but just as before – it is more respectful, particularly with an ally, to ask permission first." And before she could blink, her wand was no longer in her hands. All eyes snapped to her. Evan…Midshipman Fenix handed the offending wand to Hermione. "I found our wizard. McCormick – if you would stay with our Madam Ambassador. Hermione, feel free to give Madam Bones her wand when I leave. I should be back in five minutes. Major! By your leave, sir." He turned and saluted the Major. "Go, Fenix. Bring us back this wizard." The Major replied.
After exiting the office, Evan stepped into the dark shadows of a shed. He evoked Kuji Kiri to make his physical, aura, and magical presence invisible. Transforming into his Harpy Eagle form, he became airborne. He flew out over the forest, circling around to the motor pool area. Seeing no one nearby, Beaky, the Harpy Eagle, (in remembrance of his friend from 2nd year) made his approach on silenced wings. As his claws grabbed his prey's shoulders from behind, he transformed back into his human persona, pushing the female soldier to the ground face first, stunning her. Turning her into a twig, he transformed back into Beaky, picked her up and flew back the way he had come.
