June 20, 1996. 1730 (5:30pm), IFOR HQ, Major Tiff's office. Not five minutes passed when Midshipman Fenix entered the office carrying a soldier over his shoulder. He plopped the soldier in a chair, her hair bun unravelling and cascading down the back side. He then bound her arms and legs to the chair, took out his commando knife, sliced open her left sleeve exposing the Dark Mark. Turning to Madam Bones, he asked "Can you check her for magical objects?" "Should I ask for her permission?" Madam Bones asked cheekily, remembering the last time she was about to cast a spell. "Ask; don't ask. I don't care. She has a Dark Mark and doesn't deserve my respect." Madam Bones cast her spell, retrieving one wand and one portkey. "I highly doubt she is a pureblood, working with non-magicals as she has. She is either a half blood or new blood, which means that wearing that Dark Mark means something even darker." Hermione said.
"We need to question her" said the Major. "How do we ensure she tells the truth?" he added. "Well, there is Fenix's method" said McCormick. "Fenix's method?" asked the Major. "Pressure points" chipped in Evan. "Didn't leave a mark on him" he added. "You could use that concoction you gave the Aurors?" Hermione chimed in. Madam Bones' head popped up at that. "I would prefer that method" Evan said. "I could cast a Veritas spell. It's like a compulsion to tell the truth, but its not perfect." Said Madam Bones. While they were discussing the 'how', Evan's mind was reviewing the Kuji Kiri. The fifth and sixth kuji were about intention and awareness – elements of the brain, thoughts. The fifth Kuji, 'Kai' is intuition: premonition of danger, and feeling others intent. About seeing, feeling and knowing the energy connections between oneself, and the infinite. The sixth kuji is 'Jin' or Awareness: feeling the thoughts of others and perhaps hiding one's own. Awareness, according to Kuji-Kiri, delves much deeper than Kai, intuition, into the realm of this energy; it allows the practitioner to hear the thoughts of others while shielding their own, and should be practiced with care. It says that judging what is perceived from others might cloud that perception – rather do not judge so that the intents of the thoughts are clear. That 'Leglimiens' spell they were talking about earlier sounded a lot like 'Jin'. The kuji kiri was about focusing energy. Magic was about controlling and focusing energy. It all came down to intent. Evan knew he had to be careful in how he used his arts. Shinobi Linnear had told him stories about his own nemesis, about going down the dark path.
"Go ahead and use your magic, Madam Bones" he said. 'and I'll use mine' he continued in his mind. Madam Bones cast the Veritas spell on the soldier, then Ennervete. The soldier woke up with a "Unnn." The Major began. "What is your name?" "Jenna MacMillan". Hermonie quickly whispered in the Major's ear. "Do you have family at Hogwarts?" "Yes, my brother Ernie". "How long have you been at IFOR?" "I was just transferred here a few days ago." "What is your mission here?" "To support the peace-keeping mission." The Major turned toward Madam Bones. "I am a bit at a loss. You would have more experience with Death Eaters." He suggested. Madam Bones then took over the questioning. "MacMillan. Who is your Death Eater contact?" "Dolohov" "When was the last time you made contact with him?" "Yesterday" "What are your means of contact?" "Mostly by owl. Sometimes we meet in the nearby village." "What were your latest orders from Dolohov?" "To report on the arrival of the Ambassador, and if the opportunity presents, abduct her using the portkey." "Did you have any other instructions?" "No." "Were there, or are there, any other wizards or magical creatures on base here?" "I don't know" "Did you place any spells on or in any of the structures at this base?" "No".
Midshipman Fenix's POV – Evan was monitoring Jenna MacMillan's answers with Kuji-Kiri. When she mentioned her brother, Ernie, he saw that he was also a Death Eater. Ernie and Jenna were half bloods. Evan saw the induction ceremony making them Death Eaters. One could not be coerced, confounded, or compelled to become a Death Eater. Ernie and Jenna voluntarily helped pure bloods at Hogwarts beat up new bloods, severely injuring them, and then obliviating them of all knowledge of magic. Draco Malfoy was one of their main conspirators. Evan's attention sharpened exponentially when she mentioned Dolohov's name. He got a better, detailed look at Dolohov in her mind. He saw the owl, that delivered her the messages from Dolohov – one owl. He saw them meet in the village. He saw and heard her getting instructions from Dolohov. He also saw she got instructions on how to control her answers when she suspected she was under a truth serum.
As Madam Bones came to the end of her line of questioning, Evan piped in "Would you mind if I asked some questions?" The Major and Madam Bones looked at him, and then shook their heads. Hermione, in the meantime, came to his side and whispered in his ear. He nodded then turned toward their prisoner and began. "When did you become a Death Eater?" "After Hogwarts". "You already had Death Eater leanings in Hogwarts, though, didn't you?" "Nnnn..oo" she responded weakly. "Who is Traverse Green?" "He was my boyfriend, at Hogwarts" she responded, in a timid and slightly frightened voice. "What house was he in?" "Slytherin" "What happened to him?" "He was killed in Gandy Street last year – the Muggles killed him!" she spat out. "He was a marked Death Eater, on a mission, was he not?" "Yes". "That is why you became a Death Eater, is it not?" "Yes" "Why did Ernie become a Death Eater – he is only finishing 5th year now?" "He likes to be between Pansy Parkansen's knees" she sneered. "What other Death Eaters do you know at Hogwarts?" "Malfoy, Goyle, Crabbe, Parkinson, Flint graduates this year, the Carrow sisters, the Selwyns were marked this year, Bulestrode, Nott, Marietta Edgecombe, Cho Chang got marked this last year, and McLaggen the big braggart. I don't know any others." Evan glanced at Hermione, who had written down all the names, and at Madam Bones. With a nod he continued.
"Are you a legitimate member of the British Armed Forces at IFOR" "No". "How did you get a uniform?" "I stole one from another woman." "Where is this woman?" "Dead." "Here in Bosnia, or in the UK?" "Here in Bosnia" "What was her name?" "I don't know. We chose her because of her similar build and complexion" replied their prisoner, apathetically. "How did you get on base?" "I walked through! Those idiots at the gate are so stupid we didn't even have to confound them." She declared triumphantly. "You say 'we' – explain." At this, Jenna nearly choked, but didn't speak. Evan tried again, this time applying a little pressure to her ulnar nerve. "Ahhhhh" she gasped "D..dd…d…" and then she collapsed, unconscious. Evan looked up, uncompassionately – "Must be some kind of magical protection. There is a non-magical here, a non-military person, a thug, posing as a mechanic. Her new lover, and an assassin. His name is Dawson. He is approximately 6 foot, approximately 12 stone (160 lb), light complexion, black medium-length hair, well built. He is her backup plan if she were to get caught. Your orders, sir?" "If he is on base, I want him found. At the same time I want the Ambassador protected." Said the Major. "Sir, between yourself, McCormick, Madam Bones and Hermione, the Ambassador should be well protected here. Hermione, you once mentioned an impenetrable spell? It makes things impenetrable to penetration? Perhaps you can put that on the walls and ceiling of the room. Seal the door after me. I'll find this Dawson and bring him back." Said Evan. He quickly gave Hermione a hug. "Don't underestimate him because he is non-magical. He is an assassin. Take these", giving her a bag of tetsubishi (spiked caltrops, like he used at her house). "Spread them around the door and windows. Seal the windows and doors with the impenetrable spell. Have Dobby take you and the Ambassador to your apartment if he does make it in before I get back." Evan gave her a quick kiss and left.
