With the sandstorm gone, every camera and every pair of eyes across Indigo finally saw the summit of Mt. Silver clearly. And the battle that was raging inside it.
They saw Moltres flying, but she was no longer the proud golden bird of legend. Blood dripped from her beak. Feathers were torn and burned. One wing hung lower than the other. She looked like she had been through a war.
Reporters zoomed their lenses as far as they could.
"The sandstorm has cleared, and finally we can see what is happening inside it. And would you look at that," one reporter shouted into his microphone, voice shaking with excitement.
"Moltres, one of the three legendary birds of Kanto, is bleeding! Gym Leader Gladion has made a legendary bleed! He has put her in terrible shape!"
He continued, "Is the new form of his Tyranitar that strong? Could it now compete with Moltres or was it a team effort from Gladion to reduce Moltres to such a state?"
Another reporter could barely speak. "There will be no more destruction today, folks. Gym Leader Gladion has made sure of it. You can rest easy now."
Cities erupted in cheers. People hugged strangers in the streets. Children jumped and screamed Gladion's name. Parents cried with relief. Trainers raised their Pokémon in salute.
But the old war veterans who had fought in the Infinite Pokémon War stayed silent. They had seen legendaries before. They knew the fight was never over until the legendary stopped moving forever.
On the summit, Moltres locked eyes with Gladion. He prepared his next command, ready to end it.
Then she stopped flying. She landed heavily on the cracked ground.
"Is it giving up?" Gladion whispered confused. Why would a flying Pokemon give away it's advantage of flying otherwise?
Reporters asked the same question at the exact same moment.
Moltres answered with a screech so loud it hurt. Golden light exploded from her body. Gladion's eyes widened.
'Roost. Fuck Fuck Fuck. She is healing herself.' Gladion cursed in his mind as he finally realised why Moltres had landed on ground. Roost healed a flying Pokemon by a lot but in return it took away the Pokemon's flying type temporarily. Basically, it's ability to fly.
Wounds closed on Moltres body. Blood stopped flowing. Torn feathers smoothed. In seconds she looked almost new, except her eyes burned with even greater rage.
She charged at Gladion and his team. Flames covered her entire body as she ran on her powerful legs in a flame Charge.
Gladion shouted instantly. "Collosus, Giga Impact!"
Pink and purple energy wrapped around the mega Tyranitar. He charged to meet her.
Two living disasters collided. The explosion shook the whole mountain. Moltres flew backward and slammed into rock. Collosus slid back with light burns across his chest.
Collosus had won that exchange because of his bigger size and bulk.
Collosus moved closer to Moltres.
Gladion pressed the attack. "Dark Pulse!"
A ball of pure darkness shot from Collosus and struck Moltres point blank. She grunted but stood up like nothing had happened.
'What the fuck is wrong with her? Is not she supported to be an offensive Pokemon? Why is her defense so broken? That dark pulse had done almost nothing.' Gladion thought
'I will have to spar with big brother and sister after this. At this rate, I might be fighting legendaries every other year.' Gladion thought as he focused back on the fight.
Flames burst from Moltres's body and erupted in every direction. She had used incinerated. The fire wave burned down everything it came in contact with.
Gladion yelled. "Everyone back! Collosus, can you take it?"
Collosus nodded once.
"Good just use iron skin forgood measure."
Fire filled one hundred metres around her. Stone melted. The air itself burned. Collosus stood in the centre and took it all. He grunted in pain due to the burns forming on his body but did not fall.
Gladion seized the moment. "Earthquake!"
Collosus lifted one massive foot and brought it down. The mountain screamed. Cracks raced across the summit. The ground split open. Moltres lost her balance and fell into a deep fissure. Rocks and boulders crashed down on top of her.
The earthquake rolled all the way down the slopes. Soldiers and remaining wild Pokémon stumbled and grabbed anything to stay standing.
When the shaking stopped, Collosus breathed heavily. Mega Evolution was draining his energy fast. Burns covered his body. The transformation would not last much longer.
Deep in the crack, fire exploded upward burning down the rubbel on top of her. Moltres burst out with a roar and took to the sky again, flames brighter than before. The effect of Roost ending.
Gladion grimaced. They were getting nowhere. Collosus would collapse soon. And Moltres was still going strong.
He could not let another Pokémon get hurt like Tengen. He did not want more crippled friends.
He reached for the two special Poké Balls on his necklace.
'Big brother, big sister, I need you. I was wrong and too arrogant to think I could do this without your help.'
Latias's gentle voice answered in his mind. 'We are ready, little brother. But it seems we are not needed after all.'
Gladion blinked in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Before he could ask again, a new screech tore across the sky. Every soul on the mountain felt it in their bones.
A second legendary aura washed over them, cold and sharp and ancient.
It was the cry of another legendary bird.
And it was not Moltres.
