Gladion saw purple poison marks spread across Moltres's golden feathers, but the flames on her body burned brighter and ate the poison away. Even the poison inside its blood were burned away by the heat generated by her.
With a piercing screech that hurt the ears, she used Agility. Her body blurred as her speed increased.
The speed boost for a legendary bird was not normal. It was terrifying. Even the raging sandstorm could not slow her down anymore.
Moltres shot forward like a burning arrow. Her target was clear. The human who dared to lead Pokémon against her. The one who stopped her from achieving her revenge of destroying the human cities and getting her egg, her child back.
Her target was Gladion.
Her wing glowed with pure white energy in a Wing Attack.
Collosus took one step back as he shot himself towards Gladion, but he knew he would never reach Gladion in time.
Inside their Poké Balls, Latios and Latias felt the danger. They prepared to burst out, but even they understood they would be too late.
Gladion tried to teleport. Nothing happened. Moltres had flooded the area with her power again. Psychic movement was locked for everyone.
He threw everything he had into a psychic barrier. Blue light formed a wall in front of him. He poured all his aura into it.
Moltres broke the sound barrier. A sonic boom exploded behind her. The Wing Attack smashed through the barrier like it was glass. Shards of psychic energy flew everywhere.
Collosus roared with pure despair. [Noooooo!] The roar shook the mountain, but it could not stop physics not Moltres.
Nyx screamed from the side. [Boss!!]
Gladion closed his eyes. Fear hit him, but it was not the biggest feeling. He did feel fear as death approached him. Regret was bigger. He would never see his family again. He would never tell his Pokémon how much he loved them one more time. He would never fix things with Sabrina.
He waited for the end.
A heavy push struck him from the side. He flew through the air and landed hard. When he opened his eyes, horror froze his blood.
Tengen stood where he had been. One of the Scizor's steel arms was gone. Blood poured from the stump. The Wing Attack had sliced clean through.
Moltres did not get time to finish the job. Collosus was already there. His head glowed with power. He headbutted Moltres so hard she spun in the air. Then his massive tail whipped around and smashed her away like a baseball.
Hydros fired a Hydro Cannon that struck her full in the chest. Water hissed into steam, and Moltres coughed.
Lee appeared in a burst of rage. His fists became shadows. Rage Fist after Rage Fist slammed into the legendary bird again and again and again. Each hit landed with the sound of thunder. Blood flew from Moltres's beak.
Gladion crawled to Tengen. The Scizor looked at him and smiled through the pain.
[Master,] Tengen said weakly, voice full of pride. [Am I a protagonist now? Like those heroes you told us about in your stories? Like Neji who protected his friend? Like Ace who died with a smile for his brother? I always thought they were stupid for giving their lives to protect someone else. But now I understand. It feels worth it.]
Gladion felt tears burn his eyes. He fought them back. "Don't talk like you are going to die! Mystique, Life Dew, now!"
Mystique floated over fast. Pink healing water rained down on Tengen. The bleeding slowed. The wound closed. Gladion quickly returned Tengen to his Poké Ball. Inside the ball, the injury would stay stable since Tengen would be put in a statis.
He whispered to the ball. "Yes, Tengen. You are a hero. An even bigger hero than any hero in any of the stories I ever told."
He looked at the burned stump where the arm had been. Moltres's flames had charred it completely. There was nothing left to save. Tengen would never have his arm back. Gladion shook himself from such thoughts for now.
Gladion turned back to the fight. Lee was lost in pure rage. His eyes glowed red. Every Rage Fist hit harder than the last. Moltres looked like a bloody mess.
But Gladion knew Lee could not dodge in this state. One good hit from the legendary bird and Lee would be gone. And he would not let another of his Pokemon get a life threatening injury.
He returned Lee to his Poké Ball before Moltres could strike back.
The legendary bird had suffered enough. She shot into the sky with a scream of fury. Her wings beat once, twice. A massive Hurricane formed around her. Wind howled. What remained of the forest and the sandstorm was ripped away and thrown into the clouds.
Gladion shouted over the storm. "Ultron, psychic! Keep us on the ground using telekinesis!"
Ultron's eyes flashed. Blue light wrapped around every Pokémon and Gladion himself. They stayed rooted as the hurricane screamed past.
When the wind died, Moltres hovered high above, flames burning brighter than ever. She glared down with pure hate. And there was no Sandstorm to hinder her now.
