Everyone on the mountain turned their eyes to the sky when the new screech cut through the air. It came from far away. Nothing was visible yet, but a heavy pressure pressed down on every heart.
The aura that was emnating from the pressure was sharp and electric, different from Moltres's burning rage.
Gladion let out a long breath of relief. "It seems the backup finally arrived. She decided to help after all. I guess there is really no need of your help big brother and sister."
The wind howled louder. Then the clouds cracked open like glass.
Zapdos descended from the heavens like a golden spear of pure power. Lightning danced across its wings.
Every feather crackled with energy ready to explode. Each beat of its wings sent visible ripples of thunder through the sky. The electric legendary looked exactly like the one Gladion had saved years ago.
He had freed her and her baby from Team Rocket cages. She had promised him a favour that day. Gladion had sent Ultron to remind her of that favour before the start of the battle since he knew it was better to cash in the favour and have Zapdos fight Moltres rather than revealing Latios and Latias.
While it was a waste of a favour from a legendary Pokemon, he did not think that he would find another use of that favour since he now had his own legendary Pokemon to rely upon.
And as for Zapdos answering his call, he knew she would answer.
Legendaries kept their word better than most humans. Besides, it was not a small favour since he saved Zapdos from possible death or capture while also protecting her baby.
Gladion turned his attention back to his Pokemon.
Collosus had dropped to one knee as he panted in exhausttion. The Mega Evolution ended in a flash of light. Exhaustion rolled over Gladion like a wave too. His partner had given everything and so has Gladion in keeping the legendary at bay.
"Good job, buddy," Gladion said softly. "We did not do half bad against our first legendary. Rest now."
Collosus tried to grunt in protest. He wanted to stay and protect Gladion. Gladion simply smiled and returned him to his Poké Ball before the big guy could argue.
He looked at the rest of his tired team. "Good job, everyone. You were amazing. Rest for now. You all deserve it."
One by one he returned them. All carried burns and wounds, but none as bad as Tengen or Collosus.Only Ultron stayed out, hovering quietly.
Thoughts about Tengen made Gladion grimace but he still needed to solve this situation before worrying about his Pokemon's condition.
Gladion released Elder Green. The giant Tropius appeared with a happy rumble. Gladion had kept him safe in the ball earlier. Fire was deadly to Grass types, and Elder Green's size made dodging hard. And a single attack from Moltres would have been disastrous for him.
"Let's move a little farther away," Gladion said as he climbed onto the wide leafy back. "We do not want to be caught in the middle of this."
Ultron followed through the air as they flew to a safe ridge lower down the mountain.
Moltres did not even glance at them. Her eyes stayed locked on the new arrival.
Gladion grabbed his walkie-talkie. "Gym Leader Gladion here. All units retreat immediately. The summit is about to become far more dangerous. Get clear now. The area is about to become a battlezone between two legendaries. Clear the skies as well."
Below, soldiers and remaining wild Pokémon scrambled to obey.
For one heartbeat the world went still. Two legendary birds stared at each other across the broken summit. Fire and lightning.
Then the clash began.
Zapdos opened its beak and unleashed Thunder. A colossal bolt of pure electricity, thick as an ancient tree, tore downward. The sound arrived a moment later. It was the loudest thunder anyone had ever heard. The mountain itself seemed to scream.
Moltres answered instantly with Overheat. A white-hot torrent of flame shot forward like the sun had fallen to earth. The fire swallowed the lightning mid-air. Light exploded so bright that people tens of kilometres away saw the sky flash. The collision carved the clouds apart. Shockwaves rolled outward and shook the entire region.
The peak beneath them split wider. Trees far down the slopes burst into flame or snapped like matchsticks from the pressure alone. The sky flickered between blazing orange and electric gold. Day and night fought in the same moment.
Pokémon that had not retreated fast enough screamed as they were caught between the two forces. Some turned to ash. Others fell stunned by the raw power released by the two legendary birds of Kanto.
Gladion watched from the ridge and gripped Elder Green's neck. "Let's hope the Tyranitar family got clear. I do not want today to be the first and last time Collosus sees his mom."
Zapdos screeched again. The sound was sharp and metallic, rattling bones inside the body.
She released more electricity from her body that was aimed straight at Moltres.
Moltres roared back. Pure fire filled the sky in answer.
Lightning and flame tore the heavens in two.
And Mt. Silver became the battleground of gods.
