Chapter 261 Dysfunction or Corruption
"Like many rapidly growing organizations, there tends to be some level of dysfunction or corruption, which means I occasionally have to handle their issues," Daniel explained, bitterness tinging his voice. "Think of it this way, I operate like an adventurer that the Alliance recruits for their 'quests.' There is no doubt they have a similar arrangement with the other directors. While this structure can earn us money, dealing with these Alliance-issued quests doesn't provide the same level of rewards relative to the risks of completing guild requests." Daniel lamented.
'I think he may be trying to imply that he and the other directors are in a sort of not-so-good binding contract,' Lucia whispered in Aleshia's mind.
Aleshia discreetly replied, 'I'm beginning to think that too, Lucia.'
Rebel stood up from her chair and rustled Daniel's hair before settling back into her seat. "That is distressing," she said. "But now you have me, and soon everyone else, to start taking care of you again. So while you're with us, feel free to express your discontent and any other emotions you've been holding inside." Rebel offered a comforting hand.
Aleshia thought about how she could be more helpful and concluded, "Since I can defend myself with magic and other means, I might be able to take on some quests for money. You don't need to worry about it being a nuisance for me; after all, it can help me raise my rank as well, so it won't be a problem." Aleshia offered a suggestion.
Daniel quickly declined her offer of help, but then changed his mind midway. "No, it's alright. You don't need to rush your rank to earn money for our cause. However, it would help if you could accept the quests I give you from time to time," he explained. "If you can complete those, it could provide some fresh opportunities for money to flow in, since I may not always have the time to finish them. Also, when I'm out, I'd like you to continue teaching the kids, and maybe let Rebel and the others join in when they wake up." Daniel secretly hoped she would agree to them sitting in on her classes so they could benefit from the education that Aleshia was providing.
"Of course," Aleshia immediately replied, glancing at Rebel with sympathy.
"Hey, that doesn't mean I don't know anything! Just for your information, I struggle with complicated stuff like maths," Rebel said, playfully offended and honestly describing her challenges. She added, "Though perhaps I can offer practical advice since you're focusing on learning and theory. I know the streets, and you know the academics." Rebel continued, "Maybe I can provide some life advice for the kids."
