The grounds of the Butterfly Mansion exuded a tranquil charm, their serene beauty heightened by the soft hum of activity in the background. The air carried the gentle aroma of flowers and herbs, a welcome respite from the chaos of battles and the lingering scent of blood and steel.

As I strolled through the paths, taking in the calm, I spotted a familiar figure walking ahead—Tanjiro.

It was good to see him up and about again, his movements light and purposeful, as though his injuries were already a thing of the past.

His ever-present warmth and determination radiated from him, and it brought a small smile to my face. What struck me, however, was the absence of Nezuko.

Usually, she was right by his side, carried on his back or nestled in her box. Her absence felt almost unnatural.

As soon as he noticed me, Tanjiro's face lit up, and he made his way over, his enthusiasm evident in every step.

"Alex-san!" he greeted, his tone bright and cheerful. "How are you? Are you feeling well?"

I chuckled at his genuine concern. It was such a typical Tanjiro thing to ask, always putting others before himself.

"I should be the one asking you that, Tanjiro. How are you doing? Judging by the way you're moving, I'd say your wounds have healed nicely."

He beamed, nodding enthusiastically. "Yes, thanks to Aoi-san and the others here, I've recovered faster than I thought possible. They've been so kind and attentive."

His gratitude was as sincere as ever, and it was clear he held the staff here in high regard.

The Butterfly Mansion was indeed a sanctuary, a place where the wounded could find solace and care.

I gave him an approving nod. "It's good to hear that. So, where are you headed in such high spirits?"

"To the training hall!" he said with unmistakable excitement. His eyes sparkled as he continued, "Shinobu-san told me I could start training again if I felt ready, and I can't wait to get back to it!"

"Already back to training, huh?" I said with a raised brow, unable to suppress a smirk. "You really don't know how to slow down, do you?"

Tanjiro laughed, a bit sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head in that endearing way of his. "I need to keep improving, Alex-san. Every day is an opportunity to grow stronger. With enemies as powerful as the Upper Moons and Muzanette, I can't afford to waste time."

His words carried a weight that belied his age, and I couldn't help but admire his resolve. Despite everything he had endured—the loss of his family, the relentless battles, and the constant threat of death—he remained unyielding in his mission.

That kind of determination was rare and, in its own way, inspiring.

"Good mindset," I said with a nod. "But don't forget that recovery is just as important as training. You can't grow stronger if you push yourself to the point of breaking."

"I know," he said, his smile softening. "I've learned that lesson the hard way. I'll take it slow and steady this time."

"Good," I said. "So, what about Nezuko? Is she resting?"

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, followed by a sheepish smile. "Yes, she's safe and resting in her box. I thought it'd be better to let her have some quiet time while I focus on training."

"Wise decision," I said. "She's lucky to have a brother like you looking out for her."

His cheeks flushed slightly at the compliment, and he laughed lightly. "Thank you, Alex-san. That means a lot coming from you."

As I walked away from the Tanjiro, the soft hum of activity fading behind me, a familiar voice echoed in my mind—a voice both haunting and comforting, like a whisper carried on the wind. It was Death, her tone laced with amusement and intrigue.

"It seems you really put that boy in high regard, dear," she said, her words settling into my thoughts like ripples on still water.

I smirked slightly, her observation not entirely wrong. "Of course," I replied, keeping my tone casual. "It's not every day we come across someone so genuinely kind-hearted. People like him are rare."

"Wasn't it you who once scoffed at the notion of 'genuine kindness' being anything but a weakness? And yet, here you are, singing praises for this boy. How fascinating."

I chuckled at her observation, unbothered by her teasing. "People change, my dear Death. Besides, wasn't it you who told me Tanjiro is one of a kind? You've seen countless lives, weighed countless souls, and yet you deemed him special enough to mention to me."

Death's voice turned wistful, a rare emotion for her. "Indeed, I did. He defies the odds, doesn't he? A soul so pure, burdened by tragedy, yet unbroken. It's… fascinating."

"Fascinating, huh?" I echoed, a small chuckle escaping me. "That's high praise coming from you. Normally, you're more interested in collecting souls than admiring them."

She let out a soft sigh, the sound weaving through my mind like a melody. "You know as well as I do, dear, that not all souls are equal. Some shine brighter than others. And that boy… his light could illuminate the darkest abyss."

I nodded, even though she couldn't see me. "It's true. Tanjiro's determination and kindness are unlike anything I've seen in a long time. He has a strength that doesn't come from raw power—it's something deeper."

"Perhaps," Death mused, her tone thoughtful. "Or perhaps it's because he reminds you of the man you once were."

I don't have much memory of who I was before I met Death, so I don't know if my past life was kind or not.

"Maybe," I admitted softly. "Or maybe it's because he's what I could never be."

Death's laugh was gentle, almost comforting. "And yet, dear, it's that very darkness in you that makes you so compelling. Perhaps you and the boy are not so different after all."

If it was Death saying it, maybe it's true.
