As I wandered through the quiet grounds of the Butterfly Mansion, the soothing ambience was suddenly interrupted by the sight of Shinobu heading straight toward me.
Her expression was calm but held an unmistakable intensity, the kind that suggested she wasn't here for small talk. Her petite frame belied the commanding aura she carried, and it was clear she had something on her mind.
I decided to match her seriousness with my usual playful demeanor. "Well, well," I said with a grin. "To what do I owe the honor of this unexpected visit, Shinobu? Did you miss me already?"
Her violet eyes remained fixed on me, unamused by my teasing. "There's a powerful demon wreaking havoc in a nearby village," she said, her voice steady and measured. "I need your help to hunt it down."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her straightforwardness. But, naturally, I couldn't resist the urge to poke fun. "And what makes you think I'd be interested in a little demon hunt? There are plenty of other… activities I could indulge in, you know."
Shinobu's gaze sharpened ever so slightly, and the faintest smirk played on her lips. "Like what you were indulging in yesterday… and this morning?"
Her words caught me off guard for a split second. So, she had heard Shalltear and the others. I suppressed a chuckle, finding her bluntness oddly entertaining.
"It seems your activities weren't as private as you thought," she continued her tone was calm but with an underlying edge. "Even if you find them enjoyable, I must remind you that this mansion serves as both a rest house and a medical centre for Demon Slayers. Your… unnecessary noise has been distracting my patients."
"Well," I said, scratching the back of my head with a sheepish grin, "I'll admit I didn't think about the thin walls."
"Clearly," she replied, her voice soft but carrying a note of finality. "I trust you'll keep your indulgences in check moving forward."
"Alright, alright," I conceded, holding my hands up in mock surrender. "But you still haven't answered my question. Why should I be interested in a little demon hunt? Surely the great Shinobu could handle it herself."
Her eyes narrowed slightly, and a sly smile tugged at her lips. "Because," she began, her voice smooth and deliberate, "this isn't just any demon. And," she added with a knowing look, "I might even teach you a thing or two about my techniques."
"Oh?" I tilted my head, feigning curiosity. "And why would I need to learn anything from you? I'd like to think I'm doing just fine on my own."
She stepped closer, her gaze unwavering as she looked up at me. "A gut feeling," she said simply.
"A gut feeling?" I echoed, amused by her confidence.
"Yes," she said with a serene smile. "You're powerful, Alex. I've seen that much. But power without precision can be wasteful. If you're truly as strong as you appear to be, wouldn't it be wise to refine that strength?"
Her words were calculated, aimed at challenging my pride without overtly confronting it. She was clever; I'd give her that.
I chuckled softly. "You make an interesting point, Shinobu. But what's in it for you? Why go out of your way to teach me anything?"
"Simple," she replied, her expression softening just slightly. "If you're going to stay here and involve yourself in our world, it's in everyone's best interest that you're prepared. Besides," she added with a playful glint in her eyes, "you might find our techniques surprisingly effective."
Her calm confidence piqued my interest. Shinobu wasn't someone who acted without reason, and if she believed this demon hunt was worth my time, perhaps there was more to it than she let on.
"Alright, you've convinced me," I said finally, a smile tugging at my lips. "Let's go hunt this demon of yours. But," I added with a mischievous grin, "if I impress you, you'll owe me a favor."
Saying that, I extend my arm for a handshake. Shinobu was confused by these actions.
"What are you doing?" It seems Shinobu didn't know what a handshake was.
"It's a form of greeting we do after we finalize a decision." I don't even know if what I said was right or wrong.
Since she doesn't know what a handshake is, my explanation is correct, even if I am wrong.
"Oh, is that so? Then if you impress me," she countered as she extended her hands, "we'll consider it a step in the right direction."
Just as we give a handshake, a window opens in front of me.
