Beautifly was the first to move, rushing to seize the best spot in the area. Even though the "flying devices" increased their attack frequency, the effect on it was still negligible.
In the Southern Zone, a Charizard approached Beautifly's direction, intending to use its own body to interrupt Beautifly's Quiver Dance. At this stage, every Flying-type Pokémon understood that they could not allow an opponent to continue strengthening themselves.
Before the four groups clashed, each zone faced concentrated attacks from the flying devices. This wave of assault was as dense as a torrential rainstorm. Only a few Pokémon could manage to stay unharmed on their own; most had no choice but to drag others down so that they could avoid being hit.
In this phase, it became a contest of personal skills — each Pokémon had to use their own techniques to treat other Pokémon as shields.
Beautifly, who moved first, drew the attention of most of the Pokémon here. Instantly, Beautifly became everyone's target. Every Pokémon, seeing Beautifly's arrogant actions, grew irritated and wanted to eliminate it first.
"Roar!!"
Charizard flapped its wings. Its reflexes were sharp — this had been apparent from its earlier performance. After analyzing Beautifly's movements, it accurately predicted the direction Beautifly would dodge towards. It suddenly halted mid-air, blocking Beautifly's path with its strong, muscular body.
According to the competition rules, Beautifly was not allowed to attack its opponents with moves.
Charizard was banking on this, and without restraint, displayed the advantage of its physique, positioning itself directly in Beautifly's way.
"Nicely done."
Somewhere in Sootopolis City, a red-haired young man watched Charizard's performance, feeling secretly proud. They were about to eliminate the overly flashy Beautifly. However, before he could relish it for long, Beautifly's body suddenly erupted with a storm and as if it had teleported, its body turned into an afterimage — whoosh~~
Charizard stared blankly at the empty space in front of it. Without knowing exactly when, Beautifly had slipped past its body and was already several meters away.
"Rooaarr~~" Charizard was furious, feeling it had been made a fool of. It angrily turned around and chased after the afterimage trail of Beautifly, but before it could locate Beautifly's real body, a wave of weakness swept over it. Helplessly, Charizard watched as several beams pierced through its body, and it plummeted downward, powerless.
"Charizard!!" The red-haired young man turned pale with shock. He had been aiming for the championship! As a Trainer who could consistently reach the Top Eight in the League Conferences, he refused to believe that his Charizard had been taken down so easily.
The brief clash between Beautifly and Charizard also drew the attention of other people.
Chisana, watching the live broadcast on the giant screen, thought to himself: "As expected of Beautifly… That flying maneuver, where it slipped past Charizard, was like it had become one with the wind itself. And, in order to strike back at Charizard, it deliberately moved through the areas where the beams were densest… Charizard, in chasing it, ended up placing itself right in the most dangerous position."
Several well-known Trainers and Top Coordinators who had not participated in the first event were watching Beautifly's performance on the giant screen, astonished in their hearts.
"The training of this Beautifly…" Leo, the former Elite Four member from Unova, grew interested as he observed Beautifly's performance. He couldn't tell whether Beautifly's owner was a Trainer or a Coordinator, but in his eyes, the way it has been raised was extremely fascinating.
"Using the wind, huh..." Top Coordinator Abby, holding her Skitty in her arms, was slightly stunned. Compared to the first time she had seen Terrance's Beautifly, the growth in strength displayed by this Beautifly had exceeded even her imagination and understanding. Although she herself, alongside her Skitty, had also become a Top Coordinator, Abby realized that the gap between her and Terrance had only grown larger, like a vast chasm.
"His rate of improvement really is astonishing." Wallace had seen Beautifly's performance at the Grand Festival before. Compared to back then, Beautifly's skills seemed to have undergone several rounds of transformation. Now, even in the eyes of Wallace, the Contest Master, the skills it now displayed were worthy of praise.
This Charizard had been quite a dominant Pokémon throughout its flight across the Southern Zone.
Yet even such a strong Pokémon had been toyed with and eliminated by Beautifly's flying maneuvers without being able to put up any resistance. This sight made the owners of other Pokémon in the Southern Zone, whose performance was eye-catching, increasingly anxious.
Their prayers seemed to have been answered: after witnessing Beautifly's strength, their Pokémon didn't recklessly target Beautifly. Instead, they deliberately picked off weaker targets to conserve their strength and continue flying forward.
Under the scheming and targeting of some of the more capable Flying-type Pokémon, those with subpar flying skills and poor reflexes were one by one tricked into becoming shields — forced to act as meat shields, enduring round after round of bombardments from the flying devices.
A few minutes passed.
In the Southern Zone, the number of Flying-type Pokémon had dropped from several hundred to fewer than a hundred.
And it didn't stop there. The flying devices' attacks continued. Although the overall number of Pokémon had decreased, giving each one more space to move, there were now fewer Pokémon available to be used as shields. As a result, the difficulty level each Pokémon faced hadn't really changed much.
Beautifly flew through the air, blending seamlessly with the storm. Before the four groups would meet, it continued to strengthen itself by constantly using the Violent air currents — Quiver Dance. Beautifly wasn't alone in doing this; many Pokémon were building up their strength in preparation for the great final battle.
At this moment, in the Southern Zone, Beautifly flew at the front of the main force. Seven or eight beams rained down, piercing through the silver storm surrounding it, yet failed to affect Beautifly in the slightest. Under the silver storm's cover, even the spectators in front of the giant screen could no longer see Beautifly's true body.
This scene — of beams clearly hitting, yet Beautifly continuing to fly effortlessly — constantly irritated the participants who had already been eliminated. They simply could not comprehend it.
Among the three announcers responsible for commentary, Vivian, upon seeing Beautifly finally reveal its fangs, gave up on doing commentary of the performances of other eye-catching Pokémon and instead focused all her attention here.
"Everyone, please take a look. The event has now been underway for half its duration, and the competition in the Southern Zone remains intense. That Beautifly..."
The giant screen in the plaza zoomed in on Beautifly, and a sheen of reflected light gleamed from its body. Next to it, Terrance's information appeared.
"Beautifly, sent out by Top Coordinator Terrance, maintains its leading position in the Southern Zone. Using astonishing skills, it weaves safely through the rain of obstacles. Led by Beautifly, the group is now converging toward the location of the victory item..."
