Many centuries ago, the world enjoyed a rare era of peace and plenty.
After many wars and bloodshed, the kingdoms, tired of so many battles, sealed peace agreements, setting aside old grievances, bringing stability and the guarantee of a prosperous future. And for a time, things seemed to be heading in a good direction.
However, the calm concealed a twisted storm in its shadow.
The powerful nation of Katharterio saw an opportunity in this quietude. In secret, King Kastro I, 'The Austere', drained the riches of the kingdom to enlarge his arsenal, hire mercenaries, and assemble a relentless and unprecedented army.
Even so, his greed could not be satisfied. He wanted more than military power.
Kastro then turned his eyes to the mystical arts forbidden by the elders of the temple of the nameless deity. It was then that he discovered ancestral secrets of the forbidden magics. In them, there was an unimaginable power, granted at a terrible price: his own soul.
Closing his eyes for the warnings and prophecies of the elders, as well as the very corrupt nature that emanated from those forbidden arts, Kastro succumbed to his infinite thirst and committed the greatest of all sins: he became a monster, a soul eater.
Senseless to pain, without compassion or mercy, he leaves his humanity to enjoy absolute power, using the absorbed souls in place of his own. He who was once King Kastro no longer existed. Now taken by the darkness he himself had summoned, sunk in an abyss of no return, he was reborn as the infamous "Demon King" — an immortal and cruel entity, whose followers, also seduced by their own dark hearts, turned themselves into demons, their souls becoming deformed as their bodies.
The Demon King's attacks were merciless. No prisoners. Death and destruction followed them wherever they went. The peace that the kingdoms had longed for so long was crushed before the eyes of those who could not believe the horror they witnessed.
The world, faced with imminent end, could not simply wait for the end. Gathering a strength beyond reason, brave heroes performed their final act: sacrificing their lives, they used a magic that sealed the Demon King and his minions in a magical barrier, isolating his fortress.
The cursed lands then became known as the Infernal Valley. The neighboring regions were evacuated, turning into ghost towns, haunted lands, and strongholds of outlaws. Even so, peace did not return.
The seal, over time, began to crumble. The echoes of the Demon King's curse and his wrath still persist. Lesser demons lurk in the shadows, spreading chaos, corrupting everything they touch, and seeking to free their master. The weakening of the barrier is the clock that proclaims the end of the world. It does not slow down, as if announcing that destruction is near and inevitable.
Yet, when darkness rises, the light of hope shines even brighter on the horizon.
