Chapter 25 - the way he looked at her

Afternoon.

The sun was soft.

The breeze… calm.

Laughter filled the place.

Everyone settled in.

Talking.

Moving around.

Enjoying.

Jay sat quietly.

Not distant.

But observing.

Watching.

Learning.

One of the girls walked past.

Light dress.

Bright smile.

Effortless beauty.

Another joined.

Laughing loudly.

Confident.

Free.

Jay's eyes followed them.

Just for a second.

Then…

Slowly…

She turned.

Toward him.

Keifer sat there.

Relaxed.

Talking to a friend.

Listening.

Smiling.

But his eyes…

They weren't wandering.

They weren't distracted.

They didn't follow anyone else.

They didn't shift.

They didn't search.

They stayed.

On her.

Only her.

Jay blinked.

Confused for a moment.

Then she looked again.

Carefully.

The same.

Unchanged.

Even when someone walked past him…

Close.

Even when laughter grew louder…

Even when attention shifted…

His didn't.

It stayed.

Steady.

Certain.

On her.

Jay's breath slowed.

Something inside her…

Quieted.

That small insecurity…

That tiny doubt…

It faded.

Without effort.

Without words.

She stood up slowly.

Walked toward him.

Step by step.

Not rushed.

Not unsure.

Just… drawn.

Keifer noticed her immediately.

Of course he did.

He turned slightly.

Eyes softening.

"Hey."

Jay stood in front of him.

Looking at him.

Silently.

Keifer tilted his head.

"What?"

Jay shook her head gently.

"Nothing."

A pause.

Then she asked softly…

"Why do you look at me like that?"

Keifer frowned slightly.

"Like what?"

Jay didn't look away.

"Like…"

She struggled to explain.

Then simply—

"Like I'm the only one here."

Silence.

Keifer didn't answer immediately.

He just looked at her.

The same way.

Then quietly…

"Because you are."

Jay's heart skipped.

Her lips parted slightly.

No words came out.

Keifer continued.

Calm.

Honest.

"I don't need to look anywhere else."

Jay's eyes softened.

Completely.

All the comparison…

All the overthinking…

Gone.

Just like that.

She sat beside him.

Close.

Not out of insecurity this time.

But out of comfort.

Out of knowing.

Her hand slowly moved.

Resting near his.

Not holding.

Just… there.

Keifer noticed.

And gently…

He held it.

Naturally.

Easily.

Like it was always meant to be there.

Jay looked down at their hands.

Then smiled softly.

A real smile.

Not forced.

Not unsure.

Just… peaceful.

Because now she knew.

Deeply.

Clearly.

Without any doubt.

She didn't need to be the most beautiful.

She didn't need to compete.

She didn't need to compare.

Because she already had something…

Far more rare.

A man…

Who chose her.

Who saw her.

Who stayed on her.

Even when the world around…

Offered distractions.

And in that quiet moment…

Jay realized something important.

She didn't just find a partner.

She found…

Her certainty.
