Chapter 5: Lines in the Sand
The next morning the school buzzed louder than usual. Lyra noticed it the moment she stepped through the gates. Conversations lowered when she walked past, heads turned, and whispers followed her down the hallway like she was some kind of headline. Lyra simply smirked. "Wow," Mira muttered beside her. "You're officially famous now." Lyra shrugged lazily. "People need hobbies." They walked down the hallway together, lockers slamming and chatter filling the air, but beneath the noise there was tension, like everyone was waiting for something to happen. "Look," Mira whispered suddenly. Across the hall stood Jaxon. He leaned against a locker with his usual group, but this time his eyes were locked on Lyra, sharp and angry. Lyra didn't slow down. Mira grabbed her sleeve nervously. "Lyra… maybe we should just—" "Nope." Lyra walked straight past him. Jaxon pushed himself off the locker. "Well, look who decided to show up," he said loudly. The hallway quieted almost instantly. Lyra stopped and slowly turned around, meeting his gaze without the slightest hint of fear. "Morning, Jaxon," she said casually. His jaw clenched. "You think yesterday was funny?" Lyra tilted her head slightly. "You grabbing me like an idiot in the middle of the hallway?" she said. "Yeah. Pretty funny." A few students nearby snorted with laughter. Jaxon's face darkened. "You embarrassed me." "No," Lyra corrected calmly. "You embarrassed yourself." The tension in the hallway thickened. For a moment it looked like Jaxon might step toward her again, but then a familiar voice cut through the air. "Still causing scenes?" Adrian. He stood a few lockers away with his hands in his pockets, expression calm but eyes sharp. Jaxon scoffed. "This doesn't involve you." Adrian didn't move. "You made it involve me yesterday." The two stared at each other, the air between them heavy with silent rivalry. Lyra sighed loudly. "Are we doing this again?" she asked. "Because I actually have class." Both boys glanced at her. Lyra crossed her arms. "If you two want to fight, do it somewhere else. I'm bored already." Mira whispered, horrified, "Lyra…" Jaxon's fists tightened before he suddenly laughed. "You know what?" he said. "You're going to regret talking like that." Lyra smiled slowly. "I doubt it." Jaxon shoved past her and stormed down the hall with his group. The tension slowly melted away as the hallway returned to its usual noise. Mira exhaled. "One day you're going to get us both killed." Lyra grinned. "Relax." Adrian was still watching her. "You enjoy provoking people," he said. Lyra shrugged. "I enjoy honesty." "That is not honesty," Adrian replied calmly. "That is recklessness." "And yet," Lyra said, stepping slightly closer, "no one's stopped me yet." For a brief moment something flickered in Adrian's eyes before his gaze shifted past her. Lyra followed it. Selena stood at the end of the hallway watching them. Her arms were folded and that same cold smile rested on her lips. Mira leaned closer and whispered, "You really don't know who that is, do you?" Lyra frowned slightly. "Should I?" "That's Selena Vale," Mira said quietly. "Adrian's ex." Lyra's eyebrows lifted a little. Interesting. Selena pushed off the wall and began walking toward them, students instinctively stepping aside as she passed. When she reached them she stopped beside Lyra. "Impressive," Selena said softly. Lyra smirked. "You say that a lot." "I mean it this time," Selena replied. "You handled Jaxon well." "Was that a test?" Lyra asked. Selena tilted her head slightly. "Everything is a test." Her gaze briefly shifted to Adrian before she turned and walked away. Mira groaned. "I officially hate this school." Lyra laughed. "Come on. Class." But she didn't miss the tension in Adrian's expression as he watched Selena leave. Something about that look said their history wasn't simple. Not at all. By lunchtime the cafeteria buzzed with energy. Lyra and Mira walked in carrying their trays. "Something's happening," Mira whispered. Lyra followed her gaze. Selena had just walked into the cafeteria. She moved like she owned the place—confident, elegant, dangerous. Students subtly stepped aside as she crossed the room. But she wasn't looking at them. Her eyes were locked on Adrian. He sat alone near the windows scrolling through his phone like the entire cafeteria didn't exist. Selena walked straight to his table. He didn't even look up. "Adrian," she said smoothly. Nothing. She pulled out the chair beside him and sat down. Still nothing. Students around them had gone quiet. Selena leaned closer. "You're still ignoring me," she said lightly. Adrian slowly lifted his eyes. "I am not ignoring you," he said calmly. "Then what are you doing?" she asked. "I am choosing not to speak to you." A ripple of laughter spread through the cafeteria. Selena's smile tightened. "You used to enjoy my company," she said. Adrian looked back at his phone. "That was a long time ago." Selena leaned closer. "You know you're still mine, Adrian." That made him finally look at her again and the air around them felt colder. "I am not yours," he said. "And I never was." Selena's eyes hardened. Her hand slid onto his arm. The cafeteria went silent. Adrian looked down at her hand, then back at her. "Remove your hand." Selena smirked. "Or what?" Adrian stood up. The sudden movement made Selena stumble slightly when his arm moved away and several students burst into laughter. Adrian looked down at her calmly. "You seem to misunderstand something," he said. Selena straightened slowly. "And what's that?" "Our relationship ended for a reason," Adrian said. The room went completely silent. "And that reason hasn't changed." Selena's face flushed. "I'm not interested in repeating old mistakes." Across the cafeteria Lyra leaned back in her chair, clearly entertained. Mira whispered in shock, "He just destroyed her." Selena's eyes swept the room until they landed on Lyra. Lyra didn't look away. She even raised an eyebrow slightly. Selena walked straight toward her table. "You seem amused," Selena said coldly. Lyra shrugged. "Just observing." Selena leaned slightly closer. "You think this is funny?" Lyra met her gaze calmly. "I think chasing your ex in public is embarrassing." A few students gasped. Selena's eyes darkened. "You're enjoying this too much." Lyra smirked. "Maybe stop giving me a show." For a moment it looked like Selena might explode. Then suddenly she smiled, but it was colder than before. "Careful, Lyra," she said quietly. "You're starting to make enemies." Lyra leaned forward slightly. "Good," she said. "I was getting bored." Selena stared at her for a long moment before turning and walking out of the cafeteria. The second she left the entire room erupted with noise. Mira grabbed Lyra's arm. "You are insane." Lyra laughed. "Maybe." Across the room Adrian stood near the exit. For a moment his eyes met Lyra's and this time there was something different in his gaze. Not annoyance. Not indifference. Interest. Then he turned and walked away. And Lyra couldn't shake the feeling that whatever war had just started between her and Selena…was only beginning.
