Chapter 3 - Chapter 3

The hallway was quieter now but the tension lingered like smoke. Students whispered in corners some pretending not to look others clearly staring. Lyra rubbed her wrist where Jaxon had grabbed her. The sting still lingered.

Beside her Mira exhaled sharply. "Okay… I need answers. What just happened?"

Lyra shook her head. "Nothing worth explaining."

Mira rolled her eyes. "Nothing? He grabbed you in the middle of the hallway. Adrian Vale almost started a fight with him. That's more than nothing."

Lyra ignored her and glanced down the hall. Adrian and Darius were still near the lockers. Darius looked relaxed like the entire scene was entertainment for him. Adrian, however, looked the same as always. Cold. Untouchable.

Lyra hesitated then stepped forward. "Adrian."

He didn't move. He didn't even blink. Then slowly he turned his head to look at her eyes sharp and unreadable.

"I—uh—" Lyra began.

"Speak quickly," he said his voice flat.

"I just wanted to—"

"To what?" he interrupted. "Thank me?"

Lyra frowned. "Yes."

Adrian's eyes narrowed slightly. "Do not misunderstand. I did not help you because of you."

Lyra blinked. "Then… why?"

"I do not tolerate chaos in the hallway." His jaw tightened. "That's all."

Lyra crossed her arms. "So you stepped in just because it was annoying?"

"Yes."

Her eyebrows shot up. "Wow. That's… rude."

"Do not start imagining things," Adrian said quietly.

"I wasn't imagining anything," she snapped.

"Good. Because you are not special."

Lyra felt heat rise to her cheeks. "I did not say I was."

"You looked like you might."

Lyra took a step closer. "You are unbelievably rude, you know that?"

"And you talk too much," Adrian said calmly.

Darius chuckled from behind leaning lazily against a locker. "This is actually entertaining," he said.

Lyra ignored him. Her gaze was locked on Adrian. "You could have just accepted the thank you."

"I did not ask for one."

A brief silence stretched between them. Students passing by slowed down slightly sensing something dangerous in the air.

"You should stay away from that guy," Adrian said referring to Jaxon.

Lyra rolled her eyes. "I figured that out already."

"Good," Adrian said. "Then stay away from him."

Lyra tilted her head slightly. "Why do you even care?"

Adrian's eyes hardened. "I don't."

"Then why warn me?"

"Because if he causes another scene it becomes everyone's problem. Not yours. Not mine."

Lyra's jaw clenched. "Unbelievable."

Adrian's expression softened slightly not a smile not even close just a flicker of something hidden. "Do not read into it. You are not special. Understand?"

Lyra's hands tightened into fists at her sides. "Good. I have no intention of being special to you."

He gave a slow deliberate nod and turned away. "Stay out of trouble," he said over his shoulder. "And do not follow me again."

Lyra watched him walk down the hallway his movements calm almost effortless.

Mira sidled up beside her. "Wow. He really is impossible."

Lyra nodded still staring after him. "Yeah. But he saved me… in his own cold arrogant way."

Mira raised an eyebrow. "Don't let yourself think that makes you important to him."

"I won't," Lyra said though a strange knot of frustration and curiosity twisted in her chest.

As she turned to continue down the hall a new voice cut through the chatter smooth dangerous confident.

"Lyra Bennett."

Her stomach dropped. She froze. Slowly she turned around. A girl stood a few feet away leaning casually against a locker. Sleek black hair piercing green eyes and a smile that made the air feel colder.

"You must be Lyra," the girl said. "I've been hearing… a lot."

Lyra felt a chill creep over her. There was something about this girl. Something predatory.

"I'm… Selena," she continued. "And I don't like people taking what's mine."

Lyra stepped back instinctively. Her mind raced. *Who is she? What does she want?*

Selena's eyes flicked toward the direction Adrian had disappeared. "Interesting… he seems protective of you already. That's… cute."

Lyra's pulse quickened. *Protective?* She glanced down the hall at Adrian now a distant figure completely unaware of the new threat looming.

Selena smiled again a smile that did not reach her eyes. "Careful Lyra Bennett. Not everyone is as… predictable as they seem. Some of us will do whatever it takes to get what we want."

Lyra swallowed hard. Somehow she knew Selena was serious. Very serious.

And somehow she knew the real trouble was only beginning.
