When it came to martial arts combat, Duran was a complete beginner.
Before being transported to this world, he had watched many fighting videos. In the Dragon Ball world he had hunted animals and even competed for the Ultra Divine Water at Korin Tower. But when it came to actual combat, he hadn't even truly stepped through the door yet.
If he wanted to survive the many battles that would come in the future, he needed much more training.
Krillin was a good guy, but when fighting he still hadn't learned to hold back.
Duran's face suffered the consequences.
"Hey, little bald guy! Are you jealous because I'm more handsome than you? Is that why you keep hitting my face?" Duran complained while covering his bruised cheek.
Krillin scratched the back of his smooth head awkwardly.
"Hahaha… of course not!"
The nickname "little bald guy" didn't make Krillin angry—but it did irritate Chiaotzu.
During the following fights, Duran found that he often couldn't control his body well. The flow of ki inside him also slowed down.
However, he quickly realized that suppressing his ki actually helped his training.
Ignoring Chiaotzu, Duran charged at Krillin again. If he wanted to protect his handsome face, the only way was to grow stronger.
Since Duran was only using his physical body without ki, he was clearly no match for Krillin.
But that was exactly his goal.
"I'm coming!" Duran shouted enthusiastically.
"Bring it on!" the young Krillin replied eagerly. He loved fighting.
Bang! Whoosh!
The sound of air splitting echoed continuously as the two dashed across the small island. Their battle was almost as exciting as matches in the World Martial Arts Tournament.
Watching from the side, Tien Shinhan became eager to join.
He jumped into the fight.
As a result, Duran's face was punched from both sides.
Meanwhile, Master Roshi sat nearby holding a dirty magazine. Although he appeared to be reading, he was secretly observing the fight between Krillin, Tien, and Duran.
Watching Krillin and Goku grow stronger filled Roshi with pride—especially Goku. His student's grandson was practically his own grandson, and now that boy had already defeated King Piccolo.
Master Roshi smiled slightly.
"Alright, time to eat."
Launch, whose personality switched unpredictably, had prepared a large meal.
Six people and one turtle gathered around the dining table.
"By the way, what's your name?" Krillin asked while chewing a mouthful of meat.
Tien and Chiaotzu also paused and looked at Duran.
Only then did Duran realize he had never introduced himself.
"My name is Duran," he said."I'm a man who plans to travel the entire world."
He had already set that goal for himself—to record the customs and scenery of the whole Earth.
"Not bad, young man," Master Roshi said approvingly.
Krillin, however, wasn't very interested in traveling. Tien and Chiaotzu didn't say much either; their presence was fairly quiet.
After the meal, Duran asked Master Roshi many questions about martial arts, and Roshi answered them one by one.
Finally, Duran remembered something.
"Master Roshi, do you have any heavier training weights? The set I'm using isn't enough anymore."
"What?!" Krillin shouted.
"You've been wearing weights this whole time?!"
Tien and Chiaotzu also looked at Duran in surprise.
Duran nodded calmly.
"It's only about 15 kilograms. I've worn them since I started climbing Korin Tower. Now I barely feel the weight."
Hearing it was only 15 kilograms, Krillin relaxed.
When he and Goku first trained, they had carried 20-kilogram turtle shells. Recently Krillin was even preparing to upgrade to 40 kilograms, the same weight Master Roshi usually used.
"Duran, why don't you wear 40 kilograms like us?" Krillin suggested.
Master Roshi nodded.
"Come with me."
They stopped in front of a wardrobe.
Inside were not clothes—but rows of turtle shells.
Duran broke into a cold sweat.
He had forgotten that Master Roshi's training weights were all turtle shells.
"Is there… something a little more normal?" he asked nervously.
Roshi shrugged.
"Take it or leave it."
Duran quickly apologized and obediently put on the turtle shell.
Thus began his painful training days.
Because they lived on a remote island, Krillin and Duran had to go to the mainland to buy supplies.
Master Roshi insisted that the turtle shells must never be removed.
So every shopping trip felt like public humiliation for Duran.
However, the increased weight made the training much tougher—and much more effective.
Duran clearly felt his body becoming stronger, and he could mobilize more ki inside him.
Every day he sparred with Krillin, Tien, and the others. Gradually he became familiar with their fighting techniques.
At least now he wasn't constantly getting punched in the face.
Sometimes he could even knock Krillin down, which made him quite satisfied.
Half a year later, Duran increased his weight again—from 40 kilograms to 50 kilograms.
Soon afterward, Tien, Chiaotzu, Krillin, and Yamcha went to climb Korin Tower.
Training alone became extremely boring.
But if he wanted to compete in the next World Martial Arts Tournament, Duran had no choice but to endure it.
Finally, the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament began.
"KAMEHAME—HA!"
For the first time, Duran released his full power.
The Kamehameha split the sea in front of Kame House in two.
He estimated that his strength was now strong enough to fight Piccolo.
"Duran, are you ready?" Master Roshi asked.
After Krillin and the others left, Roshi had devoted himself fully to training Duran and even accepted him as his final disciple.
"Yes, Master. I'm ready."
After three years of training, Duran had grown taller and stronger. He now wore a black suit, standing upright with confidence.
"If you're ready, let's go," Roshi said, tossing him a bag.
Then he turned to stare at Launch walking downstairs.
"Young people these days… they don't respect their elders."
Duran could only sigh.
After accepting him as a disciple, Master Roshi had become even more shameless around him.
Still, Duran respected him greatly.
Roshi had even moved Kame House to the same continent where Goku and Krillin once trained and started Duran's training from scratch.
His training weight had been increased from 50 kilograms to 80 kilograms, and it took Duran three years before he could move freely with it.
"At the tournament, we'll see Goku and Krillin again," Duran said excitedly.
He had grown up reading the Dragon Ball manga, so meeting the characters in person was incredible.
"You know Goku?" Roshi asked.
"Yes. I met him three years ago at Korin Tower."
The tournament venue was on a small island—one that often suffered heavy damage from powerful fighters.
"I wonder when Goku and the others will arrive," Roshi said like a worried grandfather.
"Don't worry, Master," Duran replied while eating a hamburger. "They'll definitely come."
Launch also comforted him.
Before seeing his fellow disciples, however, Duran encountered the famous genius scientist Bulma.
Seeing a beautiful woman immediately turned Roshi back into a shameless "gentleman."
Duran also met several other familiar characters like Oolong.
"This is my last disciple, Duran," Roshi introduced.
Duran wasn't exceptionally handsome, so Bulma didn't swoon over him. Still, Duran knew that having a connection with Bulma could be very useful in the future.
While chatting with everyone, Duran suddenly sensed a powerful ki approaching from behind.
Since leaving Korin Tower, sensing ki had become second nature to him.
He turned around.
Someone had already appeared behind him.
"Grandpa! Long time no see!"
The cheerful voice belonged to a familiar figure.
Both Roshi and Bulma felt the person looked familiar but couldn't remember who it was.
"It's me! Grandpa Roshi! Goku!"
It was Son Goku, returning from Kami's Lookout.
"It really is you!" Bulma said, shocked at how tall Goku had grown.
"Good timing," Roshi said happily. "Krillin and the others aren't here yet. We'll all register together later."
"Oh right," Roshi added, "Goku, this is Duran, my final disciple."
Duran extended his hand.
"Long time no see, Son Goku."
Goku looked closely and recognized him.
"Ah! You're the guy from Korin Tower!"
They shook hands.
"You sensed my ki earlier—you're pretty strong. Let's fight sometime!"
"It would be my honor," Duran said excitedly.
Being acknowledged by his childhood idol filled him with joy.
Just then, Goku suddenly smiled.
"They're here."
Duran also sensed four familiar ki signatures approaching.
"Hey, Krillin! Tien! Yamcha! Chiaotzu!" Goku greeted them.
"Is that really you, Goku?!" Krillin exclaimed.
Though he had grown during the past three years, Goku was now much taller.
Krillin hugged him.
"Thank you… for using the Dragon Balls to bring me back to life."
"It's nothing," Goku replied with a grin.
"Alright, hurry and register," Roshi reminded them.
Inside the preliminary arena, everyone soon encountered Piccolo Jr., the son of King Piccolo.
His presence was dark and oppressive.
Fortunately, everyone present had strong mental fortitude and recovered quickly after he left.
Duran put on his Turtle School martial arts uniform.
Then came the tournament draw.
With Chiaotzu secretly using his psychic powers, the Turtle School disciples avoided facing each other early in the tournament.
Just then, a pleasant female voice called out:
"Goku… Son Goku, right?"
Duran knew immediately who it was.
The girl was Chi-Chi, Goku's future wife.
Watching Goku completely fail to recognize her—and seeing Chi-Chi storm off angrily—Duran couldn't help but find the situation amusing.
