Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – Operation Black Vault

The desert night over northern Syria was quiet.

Too quiet.

A cold wind moved through the shattered buildings of the abandoned town, carrying dust across the broken asphalt road. The moon hung behind a layer of thin clouds, casting pale silver light over the ruins.

From the roof of a half-collapsed apartment building, a man slowly lowered his binoculars.

Tony Fox.

Callsign: Raven.

Leader of a six-man special operations squad unofficially known in military contractor circles as Raven Team.

Through the comms in his ear, he spoke calmly.

"Area looks clear for now."

Below him, hidden in the shadows of the street, five other soldiers waited.

Each one a veteran.

Each one armed to the teeth.

The mission tonight was simple on paper.

Break into a militant communications compound.

Retrieve encrypted intelligence from their servers.

Disappear before sunrise.

But Tony had been in this line of work long enough to know something.

Missions that looked simple on paper were usually the ones that turned ugly.

He slung his HK416 assault rifle across his chest and climbed down the metal ladder to the building's second floor, where the rest of the team was staged.

Atlas was the first one he saw.

The giant of a man sat beside a window frame, calmly loading a fresh ammunition belt into his M249 SAW light machine gun. Even sitting down, Atlas looked massive. The weapon looked almost natural in his hands.

"Finally back," Atlas muttered. "I was starting to think the desert swallowed you."

Tony smirked faintly.

"Not tonight."

Across the room, another voice spoke quietly.

"Wind speed is stable."

That was Viper.

The team's sniper lay prone behind a broken wall, his M110 SASS sniper rifle resting on a bipod aimed toward the compound two hundred meters away. Through the high-powered optic he watched the entrance road like a hawk.

Viper rarely spoke more than necessary.

But when he did, it was always useful.

Near the stairwell, Ghost checked the breaching tools strapped across his chest. Frag grenades, breaching charges, and a compact MP7 submachine gun were secured to his tactical vest.

"Door's reinforced steel," Ghost said. "But nothing a little encouragement can't fix."

Tony nodded.

At the far corner of the room, Cipher sat beside a portable laptop connected to a small signal interception device. A compact M4A1 carbine leaned against the wall beside him while he monitored the militant radio channels.

Cipher was the reason they were here.

The intelligence inside the compound's servers could expose an entire network of arms dealers operating across the Middle East.

Or so their employer claimed.

"Radio traffic normal?" Tony asked.

Cipher adjusted his headset.

"Mostly patrol chatter," he said. "Nothing unusual."

Beside him, Saint finished sealing a trauma kit.

The medic looked up.

"Which usually means something unusual is about to happen."

That earned a quiet chuckle from Atlas.

Tony checked his watch.

01:40 hours.

Time to move.

He looked around the room at his team.

Six soldiers who had fought together for years.

"Alright," Tony said calmly. "Same plan as briefing. Ghost breaches the south entrance. Atlas covers the courtyard. Viper stays on overwatch."

He looked toward Cipher.

"You get inside and pull the data."

Cipher gave a confident nod.

"Just keep bullets away from the server room."

Tony gave the final order.

"Move."

The team moved like shadows through the ruined street.

No wasted motion.

No unnecessary sound.

Tony led the formation with his HK416 raised, scanning every window and rooftop for movement. Behind him, Ghost carried the breaching charges while Atlas moved last, his M249 ready to unleash hell if things went loud.

Two hundred meters ahead stood the compound.

A squat concrete building surrounded by a rusted metal fence and sandbag barricades.

Militant guards patrolled lazily near the gate.

Tony crouched behind a broken car and raised two fingers.

The team stopped instantly.

"Viper," Tony whispered.

"Two tangos near the gate," Viper replied through the comms.

"Copy."

Tony exhaled slowly.

"Take them."

A second later—

Thump.

The suppressed M110 SASS fired from the rooftop behind them.

One guard dropped instantly.

Before the second guard could react—

Thump.

He collapsed beside the first.

Viper's voice came calmly over the comms.

"Gate clear."

Tony signaled forward.

Ghost slipped through the fence and reached the compound door.

He placed a small breaching charge against the lock and stepped back.

"Fire in the hole."

The explosion was small but precise.

The steel door burst inward.

Raven Team entered the compound.

Inside, the building smelled of oil and stale cigarettes.

Tony moved down the hallway with his rifle ready.

Rooms passed quickly.

Sleeping quarters.

Storage.

Radio equipment.

Everything looked exactly like the intelligence briefing described.

Too exact.

Tony frowned slightly.

Something felt wrong.

"Cipher," he whispered. "Server room location?"

"Second floor, east side," Cipher replied.

They climbed the stairwell.

Ghost checked each corner.

Atlas covered the rear.

Finally they reached the server room.

Cipher rushed inside and immediately began connecting his extraction device to the computers.

Lines of code flashed across his laptop screen.

"Firewall active," he muttered. "Give me a minute."

Tony took position beside the door, watching the hallway.

From the roof outside, Viper's voice suddenly spoke.

"Raven."

Tony's instincts immediately sharpened.

"Go."

"There's movement," Viper said quietly.

"How many?"

"Too many."

Tony's grip tightened on his rifle.

"What do you mean too many?"

Viper paused.

Then said something that made Tony's blood run cold.

"Vehicles approaching from three directions."

Atlas swore softly.

"That's not patrol."

Tony's mind raced.

The compound suddenly felt less like a target and more like a cage.

"How many vehicles?" Tony asked.

"At least ten."

Tony's voice became deadly calm.

"Cipher. Status."

"Almost there," Cipher said urgently.

"Thirty seconds."

Tony turned toward the hallway.

From outside the building, distant engines roared.

Headlights swept across the windows.

Then the first gunshot echoed in the night.

Atlas stepped toward the window and looked outside.

His expression hardened.

"Raven," he said.

"They're not militants."

Tony felt the world slow for a moment.

"What?"

Atlas lifted his binoculars again.

When he spoke next, his voice was grim.

"Military trucks."

Before Tony could respond—

A rocket screamed through the night.

BOOM.

The outer wall of the compound exploded.

Gunfire erupted instantly.

Dozens of armed fighters poured through the shattered gate.

And they were heading straight for the building.

Tony understood immediately.

They had been set up.

"Cipher!" Tony shouted.

"Done!" Cipher yelled, ripping the data drive from the system.

Tony slammed a fresh magazine into his HK416.

His voice cut through the chaos.

"Everyone defensive positions!"

Outside, gunfire thundered across the compound.

The enemy had come prepared.

And Raven Team was trapped right in the middle of it.

The mission had just turned into a war.

And this time…

Raven Team might not walk away.
