Chapter 21 -   The Lagiacrus

Chapter 21

The Lagiacrus

Bruce felt himself submerged in a deep, cold pool of ground water. Bruce opened his eyes and struggled to the surface. How did Mr. Chicken dig all of this in ten minutes? Bruce thought to himself. When Bruce got to the surface of the pool, he took a large gulp of air before treading water for a minute. He felt Mr. Chicken pull Bruce onto the rocks.

"How did you dig all of this?" Bruce asked curiously.

"I didn't, I only dug to the rocks, there was just a large cave here." Mr. Chicken replied. Bruce looked out into the dark cave, he couldn't see anything but the stone floor he was sitting on and the shine of the sun, glittering dimly on the water's surface. "We have to get going, the onions could come down here at any moment." Mr. Chicken interrupted Bruce's only chance to relax for a very long time. "If they could have just jumped down the hole like we did, then why aren't they here now?" Bruce realized.

"Maybe they know something that we don't." Mr. Chicken said while standing up.

As soon as Bruce and Mr. Chicken stood up, the ground started to shake. "What is happening?" Bruce asked shakily.

"I'm not sure; this could be why the onions wouldn't follow us into the cave." Mr. Chicken responded.

Then suddenly, the flat, glistening surface of the water erupted with a loud boom! A serpent like monster leaped out of the water and into the air. It was hard for Bruce to see the colour in the dark, but he assumed that it was a blue monster with dark brown stony spikes slithering from the top of its head to the bottom of its tail. The monster had a gaping mouth filled with hundreds of razor-sharp teeth. Blue, spiked tendrils were visible on the side of the monster's head. Mr. Chicken yelled, "It's the Lagiacrus! A vicious monster of the water!" The Lagiacrus dived back into the water with a big splash.

Mr. Chicken and Bruce frantically looked for an opening in the great expanse of the stone wall where they could escape the creature. They stood on the only rocky floor in the entire cave because the rest was underwater. Bruce and Mr. Chicken soon realized that the small 5m2 platform they were on had a completely solid back wall. Escape was impossible.

Bruce hit the wall with his fists in anger. He heard a scream turned around, Bruce saw the Lagiacrus leap out of the water with a gaping jaw, aiming for Mr. Chicken. The monster landed just a bit behind Mr. Chicken, but when Mr. Chicken turned around, the creature closed its mouth with a loud crunch. Blood spewed into the natural pool as the Lagiacrus pulled Mr. Chicken's mangled body into the underground lake. Bruce saw that there was something off about the way that Mr. Chicken's blood ran into the dark water. Bruce couldn't see the difference between the blood and the water. Not enough time has passed for the blood to mix in with the water, why can't I see the contrast Bruce thought curiously. Then it dawned on him, the pool he was standing next to wasn't as natural as Bruce previously thought. The pool was made of the blood of the many victims of the Lagiacrus.

Bruce had not the time to dwell on the fact that one of his closest real friends had been slaughtered, as the same fate could happen to him at any time. Bruce saw the spines of the Monster that ate his friend appear, just breaking the surface of the smooth water. Bruce felt sad and happy at the same time, Bruce was sad because he had no one to talk to and Bruce was happy because he had no one constantly annoying him. Bruce knew that he had slightly failed at life, yet he still had to somehow save humanity, even though it had already fallen to its doom. Thunder shook the ground, roaring and sizzling a sausage left in the wilderness. The lake was filled with a dark red liquid called venomous blood. The expired blood of past victims filled the expanse of the cave.
