Chapter 9 - A Dangerous Discover

The forest grew darker as Alex pushed deeper. Sunlight barely filtered through the thick canopy above, and the air smelled of damp earth and moss. Every step he took over fallen branches and uneven roots reminded him of the danger this place held.

The quest progress flashed gently in front of him.

[Shadow Wolves defeated: 3/5]

[Reward: 100 EXP]

Two more remained. He had already fought wolves in the open field and along the northern path, but the last two were clearly smarter. They weren't just random monsters—they were hunting him, adapting to his moves.

Alex slowed his pace. The Analyze skill highlighted faint disturbances in the soil and broken twigs along the path. Something larger had passed here recently.

"Hmm… they're leading me somewhere," he muttered.

He crouched low, following the trail. As he moved, his mind wandered briefly to the system.

Why is this system forbidden?

The thought made him uneasy. Someone—or something—had obviously been trying to suppress or destroy it for centuries. And yet here it was, bound to him.

He shook his head. Not now. Survival first. Questions later.

The trail led him to a natural clearing surrounded by massive trees. A faint mist hovered over the ground, swirling in the cold air. In the center of the clearing, Alex froze.

A dark opening in the side of a hill revealed a cave.

His heart skipped a beat. The opening was wide enough for several wolves to move through at once. From inside came faint, low growls. The system reacted immediately.

[Enemy Nest Detected — Multiple Monsters]

Alex crouched behind a tree and scanned the cave. His Analyze skill highlighted several red dots deep inside. The intensity of the glow varied. Some were smaller—likely the remaining Shadow Wolves—but one dot shone brighter, larger, and more threatening.

Shadow Wolf Alpha — Level 6 — Threat: Medium

Alex's grip tightened on the dagger.

Level 6…? That's much higher than the others I fought.

He exhaled slowly, weighing his options. The Alpha might be stronger than him, but the quest required all five wolves to be eliminated. Retreating would mean failure.

I don't have a choice.

He carefully moved closer to the cave, keeping low and silent. Every leaf, every snapping twig made him tense. He had learned from the earlier battles: speed and precision were everything.

Suddenly, movement at the edge of the clearing caught his eye. Two small Shadow Wolves appeared, circling him warily. Alex activated the dagger's skill instinctively.

Focus. Timing. Patience.

The first wolf lunged. Alex sidestepped, slashing across its flank. The beast yelped and stumbled backward. The second wolf attacked immediately. He ducked and stabbed, striking its shoulder. Both monsters collapsed, and the system notified him of enemy defeat.

He wiped sweat from his brow, but the Alpha remained inside the cave, watching silently. Its glowing eyes reflected the faint light, and it seemed to sense his presence.

Alex considered his next move. The system flashed a suggestion:

[Skill Suggestion: Analyze → Detect Weakness]

He focused on the Alpha. Its body was massive, and its fur seemed to ripple like shadows themselves. But as he studied it, he noticed something—a small patch on its left flank where the muscles appeared thinner, less protected. That's my opening.

He took a deep breath and stepped toward the cave entrance. The mist swirled around his legs, making him appear even smaller and less threatening.

The Alpha growled low, a sound that made the hair on Alex's neck stand on end. Slowly, it emerged from the shadows, followed by the Alpha's minions—two smaller wolves with glowing red eyes.

Alex steadied himself. This fight would be the hardest yet. He could feel the tension in the air as the three wolves circled him, searching for a weak point.

He waited. Patience. Timing.

The Alpha lunged first, a blur of black fur and razor-sharp claws. Alex rolled aside just in time, his dagger glinting as he struck the Alpha's weak flank. The beast yelped in pain, staggering slightly.

The two smaller wolves attacked simultaneously. Alex pivoted, striking each one as they came. The forest echoed with growls, the clatter of claws on branches, and the hiss of the dagger cutting through fur.

The battle was exhausting. Every move required focus and energy. Sweat dripped down his forehead, and his muscles screamed in protest. But he had grown stronger since the first fight. Leveling up had improved his reflexes, his strength, and his stamina.

Finally, after what felt like hours, the Alpha collapsed. Its red eyes dimmed, and the cave fell silent. Alex sank to his knees, gasping for air.

The system flashed triumphantly.

[Enemy Defeated — Shadow Wolves Eliminated]

[Quest Complete — Reward: 100 EXP, 1 Beginner Skill Point]

[Level Up! — Level 4 — Strength +1, Agility +1]

Alex's hands shook as he wiped the dagger. His chest heaved, but a thrill of victory coursed through him. I did it…

He looked around the clearing. The mist hung thickly, and shadows stretched ominously. Yet, despite the danger, Alex felt a strange confidence growing inside him.

He had survived a high-level threat, defeated multiple monsters, and leveled up. For the first time, the idea of truly surviving in this world didn't feel impossible.

Unseen high above, the hooded watcher from the guild continued to observe. His lips curled into a faint smile.

"…Stronger than expected," he muttered. "Interesting… very interesting."

Alex had no idea he was being watched. But he also didn't know that his every action was being noted, recorded, and evaluated by someone far more experienced—and far more dangerous—than any Shadow Wolf.

For now, though, he had survived. And that was enough.
