Things slowly started returning to normal.
The group met again under the big tree.
They laughed.
Teased each other.
Shared food like they used to.
Keifer talked to everyone again.
Ella.
Freya.
Grace.
Rakki.
And Jay.
But something had changed.
Something small…
Yet noticeable.
Jay and Keifer became best friends again.
They talked.
They joked sometimes.
They sat in the same group again.
But they weren't the same as before.
There was a distance now.
A quiet space between them.
Before…
Jay would sit right next to Keifer.
Sometimes even push him to make space.
Now she usually sat a little away.
Not too far.
But not beside him either.
Before…
Keifer would tease her constantly.
"Jay, you're impossible."
"Jay, stop feeding every cat in the city."
"Jay, give me my food back."
Now…
His teasing was softer.
Less frequent.
Almost careful.
One afternoon the group was sitting together.
Freya was complaining loudly.
"I swear Rakki eats like five people."
Rakki defended himself.
"I'm growing!"
Ella rolled her eyes.
"You're twenty-two."
Everyone laughed.
Jay also laughed.
Then she looked at Keifer.
For a moment their eyes met.
They both smiled slightly.
But the smile didn't last long.
Keifer quickly looked away.
Another day Jay brought snacks for everyone.
Like she used to.
She handed one to Keifer.
"For you."
He took it.
"Thanks."
A small silence followed.
Before…
He would have immediately said something like,
"Finally you brought something edible."
But today he just opened the packet quietly.
Jay noticed.
But she didn't say anything.
Grace observed them both quietly one day.
Later she whispered to Ella,
"They're still careful around each other."
Ella nodded.
"They're protecting themselves."
Grace sighed softly.
"Time will fix it."
Even though they weren't as close as before…
They still cared.
A lot.
If Jay was late to college…
Keifer noticed.
If Keifer looked tired…
Jay noticed.
They just didn't say it out loud anymore.
One evening the group was leaving college.
Jay walked ahead with Ella and Freya.
Keifer and Rakki walked behind them.
Jay tripped slightly on the pavement.
Before anyone else could react…
Keifer instinctively stepped forward.
His hand reached out.
But he stopped halfway.
Jay caught herself before falling.
She turned back.
For a moment…
Both of them stood there quietly.
Jay gave a small smile.
"I'm okay."
Keifer nodded.
"Good."
Then they continued walking.
Still friends.
Still important to each other.
Just…
Not the same as before.
