Chapter 5 - Chapter five

Ethan couldn't sleep. His mind kept replaying the man in the black coat, his words echoing over and over. "In three days, someone close to you will die."

He sat on the edge of his bed, rubbing his face. The whispers had been warnings, but this… this was different. This was inevitable. Or at least, that's what the man wanted him to believe.

A soft breeze slipped through the open window, carrying the faint sound of distant traffic. Then, almost imperceptibly, the whisper returned.

"Listen carefully, Ethan."

It wasn't the first time the voice had spoken, but today it felt sharper, more urgent. Ethan leaned forward. "I'm listening."

"The future is not as simple as you think."

Ethan frowned. "I know that by now. But someone's going to die in three days! I can't just… do nothing!"

"Patience," the voice replied. "Act without understanding, and the consequences may be worse than the death you fear."

Ethan groaned, pressing his face into his hands. He felt trapped between inaction and action, each one terrifying in its own way.

The next morning, the man in the black coat was waiting at the corner of Ethan's street. His coat fluttered in the breeze, dark as a shadow. Ethan's stomach tightened.

"You're awake early," the man said, his voice calm, almost amused.

"I didn't sleep," Ethan admitted. "I can't stop thinking about… everything."

"Good," the man said. "Thinking is the first step. Understanding is the second. You must learn how the whispers work if you want to survive this—and protect the people you care about."

Ethan shook his head. "I don't understand. I thought the whispers were warnings, simple guidance. But now… now it's like they're trying to confuse me."

The man nodded. "Exactly. The whispers are pieces of a puzzle. They show fragments of what could happen. Your job is to interpret them, to see beyond the obvious."

Ethan's heart pounded. "And if I misinterpret them?"

The man's eyes darkened. "Then someone dies sooner than it should. And the threads of the future tighten around you."

Ethan's hands clenched at his sides. "Then tell me! Tell me who dies!"

The man shook his head. "I cannot. Not yet. The moment you know, the threads shift. The outcome changes. And the change may be catastrophic."

Ethan swallowed hard. "So I'm supposed to… what? Wait? Do nothing?"

"No," the man replied softly. "You must act—but carefully. Observe the signs, watch the people around you, listen to the whispers. Learn what they are telling you before you make your move. Only then can you hope to change the future."

Ethan's chest tightened. He felt the weight of responsibility pressing down on him. He had never felt so powerless in his life, yet he knew he couldn't back down.

The man stepped closer. "Remember, Ethan… the future is fragile. Every choice you make, every action you take, will ripple through time. One wrong step, and everything collapses. But if you succeed…"

He paused, letting the words hang in the air. "Then you become the one who controls fate, instead of fate controlling you."

Ethan stared at him, heart racing. Control fate… It sounded impossible. But something inside him stirred, a spark of determination he hadn't felt before.

"I'll do it," Ethan said finally, his voice low but firm. "I'll learn. I'll figure it out. I won't let anyone die if I can stop it."

The man's lips curved into a faint smile. "Good. That's the spirit. Lessons begin tomorrow. Until then… observe, listen, and prepare. The first sign will appear sooner than you think."

As the man disappeared into the shadows, Ethan's mind spun. He couldn't shake the feeling that everything was already moving in motion, like pieces on a chessboard sliding toward an inevitable end. But he had made a choice. He would fight the future—even if it meant breaking the rules of time itself.

That night, Ethan stayed awake by the window, watching the streets below. Every passerby seemed like a puzzle piece in the unfolding tragedy. And deep inside, he wondered—would he recognize the first sign when it came, or would it already be too late?
