Chapter 3 - Saving The Wolves (Chapter 3)

His eyes fluttered open to the morning glow pouring in through the doorway.

He yawned as he stretched his arms and sat up. Before standing up, he took a look at his log cabin from the inside. It was very bare. The bench still being the only thing in it. It was functional, but not at all pretty. He managed to make his campsite look better at least.

Christian stood up and grabbed his divine tool that was leaning against the wall. He walked outside ready to head toward the stream for some nice cold water. Before he could make it two steps out of his doorway, he noticed the crops.

The crops grew way faster than expected. The green leaves were already present above ground, and the plants were already grown. He noticed the potatoes grown in one crop, tomatoes in the second crop, and corn in the third crop. All of them grown extremely quickly due to the power of his divine tool.

Christian stood struck in amazement for a second, glancing back and forth between his crops and the divine tool in his hand. He expected to wait months, not days! He quickly plucked one of the fresh potatoes and ran down to the stream to wash it.

After washing it, he used his divine tool to peel it. He took a cautious bite out of the potato as he headed back to the campsite. It was a normal-tasting potato from his old reality. However, since he had not eaten food since he had been in this new world, it felt amazing! Even if it was by divine power, he still grew it with his own hands.

Christian leaned back against the entrance of his log cabin as he decided what to do next. One cold potato for breakfast would not cut it. It was still a bit cold out, and he knew that the nights might be getting colder. He wanted to be able to cook his food as well, so he walked behind his cabin and started work on a campfire for himself.

Soon enough, he was enjoying some cooked potatoes on a stick.

It wasn't luxury, it didn't need to be. It was fulfilling though since he made it himself. This was not a need though because Christian did not require food or water to survive with his divine blessings, but he did still want to live as normal as possible.

The cackle of the campfire felt peaceful as he watched the smoke billow up into the air.

After he was finished eating, he put out the fire and got to work building a moat around his campsite. He wanted to eventually fill that moat with water, but he wanted it to act as an extra defense against anything he might run into.

He didn't run into anything yet, but that doesn't mean never.

It was evening by the time he finished the moat completely around his large square campsite outside his wooden fence. It was deep enough not even a super-powered rabbit could jump over it, at least that is what Christian thought. He sighed as he walked around it looking at his handiwork. He left the entrance of his campsite open, using wooden planks to cross the moat.

The entrance was narrow enough to force any attackers to come in single file.

Christian crossed the moat with his wooden planks and then took them off. The moat protected him 360 degrees, and his wooden fence protected him from all sides, except the opening itself. Later, he would create a gate.

He was about to settle in for the night in his log cabin when he heard howling outside.

The howling did not sound dangerous, it sounded desperate. Pleading for help.

Christian ran outside and grabbed his divine tool to be safe. He looked outside the entrance of the campsite and looked around. There in the distance were two wolves. One appeared male and the other female. The female wolf looked pregnant. Both of them looked beaten up and fairly injured. They looked at Christian with eyes that seemed to scream for help.

Christian thought about what to do. The wolves were not too far away from the campsite. No other animals seemed to be in the area, and his gut was telling him it was safe. Plus, he knew his blessings would protect him. He was going to play it carefully though.

He placed the wooden planks down and gestured for the wolves to cross over into his campsite. He gripped his divine tool tightly. "Come here. I won't hurt either of you. I know she is pregnant so please let me help."

Of course, the wolves did not speak back to him. That would have startled Christian even more. What the wolves did do was slowly make their way to the entrance of the campsite. They cautiously dragged their paws across the entrance and made it safely inside the wooden fence.

The night air was growing more cold so Christian led the two wolves to the campfire behind the log cabin and used the divine tool to light it. The warm cackle of fire brought more life to the wolves as it protected them from the cold.

The wolves seemed to relax a little bit more.

Christian went ahead and fed them cooked potatoes. He had no idea if wolves of this world ate cooked potatoes, but it was better than nothing. After feeding them he went back to his cabin as it was late at night. He held the divine tool close to him as he went back to sleep on his bench.

As he closed his eyes, he wondered if the wolves would be gone by morning.

They kind of reminded him of his dogs he owned in his past life.

He closed his eyes.

When he woke up, to his surprise, the wolves were still there by the campfire. They were sleeping next to each other, cuddled up by the campfire. Since it was daylight now, Christian was able to get a proper look at them. They looked more cute at night when he could hardly see them.

Both of the wolves were huge, at least double the size of a normal wolf. It was possible they were able to grow back to their normal height or evolution after being able to heal overnight. Christian thought to himself. They looked like magical wolves to him.

The first wolf. The male wolf. He had jet black fur and a red ruby in the middle of his forehead. When he opened his eyes, which startled Christian, they were red. Christian knew that this wolf was fairly powerful, so for it to be injured meant something greater was out there.

The second wolf. The female wolf. She had white fur and a blue sapphire in the middle of her forehead that glowed faintly. Her eyes were blue as well. She gave off a powerful aura just like the male wolf, but not as intensely or directly.

Both of these wolves were now looking at Christian curiously.

The wolves were still injured and bruised, but they looked a bit better after eating and with some rest without worrying about the threats outside the campsite. Christian walked away from the wolves and headed down to the stream. He used his divine tool to cut down some trees and create a couple of small wooden bowls.

Those bowls were soon full of freshwater from the stream.

Christian made sure to transform his divine tool into a distiller to make sure the water was as healthy as possible. He placed the bowls next to the wolves when he got back. When he returned back to the campfire after plucking some corn, the wolves were happily slurping away at the water.

He smiled. The wolves, despite being anything but normal, gave him some company.

It reminded him of his own dogs from his past life in a way.

For the remainder of the day, Christian worked on creating two more rectangular crop areas. Just as he finished his second crop for the day as the sun was starting to set, he heard intense whining coming from the female wolf.

She was having babies.
