Chapter 26 - Chapter 25: The Silent Plague and the Ghost Market’s Veins

Chapter 25: The Silent Plague and the Ghost Market's Veins

The victory at the Gauntlet of Echoes should have been a night of celebration. Instead, the Slum Academy felt like a morgue.

The air in the warehouse was stagnant, heavy with a faint, metallic odor that didn't belong to the sewers. By midnight, thirty of the fifty urchins were convulsing on their straw mats. Their skin had turned a translucent, sickly grey, and their Qi—once flowing with the vibrant logic of Tian Mo's teachings—was now curdling like spoiled milk.

Tian Mo knelt beside Xiao Qi. His golden eyes were wide, scanning her small frame with a fury that threatened to destabilize the very warehouse.

[Divine Library Notification: CRITICAL ALERT!]

[Detection: Silent Plague (Type: Nano-Siphon Parasite).]

[Mechanism: A bio-engineered toxin that mimics natural Qi. It feeds on 'Logic-Resonance'. The more the student understands, the faster the parasite grows.]

[Status: 12 hours until 'Total Neural Collapse'.]

"They are punishing them for being smart," Chu Han hissed, his fists trembling. "The Education Bureau... they couldn't beat us in the light, so they poisoned the children in the dark."

"It's not the Bureau," Tian Mo said, his voice a low, dangerous vibration. "This toxin is too advanced. This is Imperial Alchemy. They've turned my own success into a weapon. Because I taught them to synchronize their Qi, the plague is spreading through their 'Neural Network' like a wildfire."

The Healer's Limit

Shadow Guard #4 (The Healer, Ying) was working frantically. Her jade needles were glowing so brightly they illuminated the dark corners of the slums. But for every cell she restored, the plague siphoned two more.

"Master," Ying's voice echoed in Tian Mo's mind, sounding strained. "I can stabilize the physical damage, but the parasite exists in the 'Void-Frequency'. I cannot reach it without a Sun-Soul Solvent. If I try to force it, I will shatter their meridians."

"Where do we find the Solvent?" Lu Feng asked, his face pale.

"There is only one place in the Capital where the laws of the Empire don't reach, and where forbidden alchemy is traded like common grain," Tian Mo stood up, his cloak fluttering as a cold wind swept through the broken shingles. "The Ghost Market's Core: The Black Vein."

Re-entering the Ghost Market

Tian Mo didn't go as the "Sovereign Teacher." He went as the Executioner.

He wore a mask of black bone, and his aura was suppressed to the point of invisibility. He left the nine Junior Instructors to guard the warehouse with the General (Kanos), while he plunged into the depths of the city once more.

The Ghost Market was different at 2:00 AM. The petty thieves and weapon-smiths were gone, replaced by "Void-Merchants" and hooded figures carrying jars of glowing, forbidden fluids.

[Divine Library: Scanning for 'Sun-Soul Solvent'...]

[Direction: 400 meters South. Level: Sub-Basement 9.]

[Warning: Area guarded by 'Void-Wraiths' and 4-Star Imperial Assassins.]

Tian Mo moved like a shadow. He didn't walk; he used the Tactician's 'Ghost-Step' logic, moving through the gaps in the air's density.

The Auction of Death

He reached a circular chamber carved from obsidian. In the center, a 4-Star Auctioneer with no eyes was holding up a vial of golden, swirling liquid. It was the Sun-Soul Solvent.

"The blood of a dying star," the Auctioneer whispered. "Starting bid: 2 Million Spirit Stones."

Tian Mo felt his pockets. After the bets from the tournament, he had exactly 600,000 stones. Not nearly enough. He looked around the room. He saw the high-tier elders of the Apothecary Guild and even a masked figure wearing the Imperial Crest.

"I don't have money," Tian Mo whispered to the Librarian Shadow. "But I have something they want more."

Tian Mo stepped out of the shadows.

"I offer no stones," Tian Mo's voice boomed, amplified by his 13.0 Soul Depth. "I offer a 'Perfect-Pill Logic'. I will show the winner of this auction how to remove the 30% impurity limit from any 5-Star pill."

The room went silent. In the world of alchemy, the "30% Flaw" was considered an unbreakable law of the universe. To suggest removing it was like suggesting the sun should rise in the west.

"A madman!" a masked Elder laughed. "Security, remove this trash!"

"Wait," the figure in the Imperial Mask stood up. "You are the one who repaired the Glacial Star-Jade without fire. If you can prove your claim, the Solvent is yours. But if you fail... I will take your eyes and your hands."

The Alchemy of Truth

The Imperial masked figure tossed a 4-Star 'Bone-Mending' Pill onto the table. It was high-quality, but it had the standard 30% dross.

"Fix it," the figure commanded. "No cauldron. No fire. Only logic."

Tian Mo walked to the pill. To others, it was a solid object. To him, it was a poorly constructed building.

[Divine Library: Analyzing Pill Structure...]

[Flaw #1: Calcified Nitrogen bonds.]

[Flaw #2: Thermal residual stress in the core.]

Tian Mo didn't use a hammer. He took a common needle and dipped it in a bowl of vinegar he found at a nearby food stall.

"Pills are held together by 'Spiritual Tension'," Tian Mo explained to the stunned audience. "You think you need heat to refine them, but heat actually creates the very flaws you're trying to remove. You need Chemical Neutralization and Acoustic Pressure."

Tian Mo began to whistle. It was a high-pitched, uncomfortable sound—the exact frequency of the pill's internal vibration. At the same time, he pricked the pill with the vinegar-tipped needle.

Ssssss—

A foul, grey smoke erupted from the pill. The dross, the impurities that made the pill "30% toxic," were literally being boiled out by the sound waves.

The pill shrank by 30% in size, but it began to glow with a blinding, white light. It turned from a dull brown to a translucent pearl.

[Item: 4-Star Bone-Mending Pill.]

[Purity: 100% (Flawless Grade).]

The silent auction hall erupted into chaos. The Elder from the Apothecary Guild fell off his chair. The 4-Star Auctioneer reached out with trembling hands to touch the pearl.

"Impossible..." the Imperial figure whispered. "You've broken the Heavenly Law of Dross."

"The Law wasn't made by the Heavens," Tian Mo said, grabbing the Sun-Soul Solvent from the pedestal. "It was made by teachers who were too lazy to understand the chemistry of their own craft."

The Ambush of the Shadows

As Tian Mo turned to leave, the doors of the obsidian chamber slammed shut.

"You think we would let a man with that knowledge walk out of here?" the Imperial figure said, his mask dissolving to reveal the face of an Imperial Shadow Guard—Rank 7.

Ten assassins, all at the Golden Core realm, dropped from the ceiling. Their blades were coated in the same Silent Plague that was killing the children.

"I don't have time for this," Tian Mo said, his eyes turning into pits of gold. "My students are dying."

[Divine Library: WARNING!]

[Energy Level: 15%.]

[Host is overextending. Activating 'The Sovereign's Wrath' is not recommended.]

"Then don't recommend it," Tian Mo snarled. "Just execute it."

"Shadow Guard Merge: The Executioner's Logic!"

Tian Mo's body flickered. He didn't draw a sword. He moved through the assassins like a ghost through a wall. Because he could see the Flaws in their Movement, he didn't need to fight them. He just needed to be where their blades weren't.

One by one, the Golden Core assassins fell—not because Tian Mo hit them, but because he tripped their Qi-flow. He touched a pressure point here, a meridian there, causing their own massive energy to backfire into their organs.

In ten seconds, the chamber was filled with groaning, paralyzed assassins.

Tian Mo stood before the Imperial Shadow Guard. "Tell your Emperor: The next time he wants to poison my students, he should do it himself. Because his dogs are poorly trained."

Tian Mo vanished into a cloud of grey mist, leaving the Ghost Market in a state of terror.

The Cure: Resonating the Soul

Tian Mo arrived back at the warehouse with minutes to spare. Xiao Qi's skin was almost grey-black.

He didn't waste time. He handed the Sun-Soul Solvent to the Healer (Ying).

"Use the 'General's Banner' to broadcast the frequency," Tian Mo commanded.

The Healer mixed the Solvent with her jade needles. The General (Kanos) planted his banner in the center of the warehouse.

As the Healer struck the needles, the Solvent vaporized, and the General's banner acted as a giant tuning fork, carrying the "Sun-Soul" energy into the bodies of every child simultaneously.

The "Silent Plague" parasites, which thrived in the dark 'Void-Frequency', were suddenly exposed to the 'Sun-Soul' frequency. They didn't just die; they shattered.

The grey tint vanished from the children's skin. Their Qi, once curdled, began to spin with a new, reinforced strength. By surviving the plague, their meridians had become twice as thick—a process of 'Stress-Induced Evolution'.

[Divine Library Notification: Quest Complete.]

[Status: 50 Urchins Cured.]

[Bonus: The 'Silent Plague' has been indexed. The Host is now immune to all Imperial Bio-Toxins.]

The Final Reveal: The 7th Guard

As the sun rose over the Third Ring, the children woke up. They were hungry, they were tired, but they were stronger than any "Elite" student in the city.

Tian Mo sat on the floor, his energy at a dangerous 2%. He felt a new presence in the Library.

[Shadow Guard #7 Unlocked: The Alchemist (Rei).]

[Ability: Flawless Synthesis. Can convert any waste material into high-grade pills.]

"Teacher?" Xiao Qi walked over, rubbing her eyes. "I had a dream that a giant sun was inside my stomach."

"It wasn't a dream, Xiao Qi," Tian Mo said, his voice weary but proud. "It was your first lesson in Internal Fusion. From today, the Empire cannot poison you. Because you have learned to eat the darkness."

Tian Mo looked at the nine Junior Instructors. "Pack the bags. The Slums are too small for us now. The Alliance of a Hundred Kings Tournament starts in three days. And we are going to enter through the front gate."
