Chapter 34 - Chapter 34 — THE PROPHECY OF BROKEN STARS

Silence lingered over Astra City like a fragile dream.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that followed devastation thin, trembling, uncertain.

Rain fell gently from fractured clouds, washing soot and blood from broken streets, sliding down shattered windows, pooling in cracked concrete. The once-burning skyline now stood wounded and hollow, towers scarred, bridges fractured, neighborhoods erased.

And yet

The city still breathed.

Because Kael had refused to let it die.

He stood at the highest surviving spire, the wind tugging at his torn cloak, silver-gold embers flickering faintly across his skin. His dark hair clung to his forehead, soaked with rain and sweat, his breathing slow but heavy, each inhale dragging exhaustion deep into his lungs.

In.

Hold.

Out.

His body trembled as the Radiant Blaze slowly retreated into his core, the First Flame slumbering once more.

But the cost remained.

Pain gnawed at his bones.

His vision blurred at the edges.

His heart felt like it might tear itself apart.

Below him, rescue teams surged through ruined districts, pulling survivors from rubble, guiding frightened families through collapsing streets. Emergency beacons flared. Resistance units secured key zones. Medical transports screamed overhead.

Life struggled to reclaim the ruins.

Kael exhaled slowly.

And then

The world shifted.

Space bent.

Sound vanished.

The rain froze mid-fall.

Time itself seemed to hold its breath.

Kael felt the presence before he saw it.

A vast consciousness pressed against reality, ancient and immeasurable.

The air rippled.

Light twisted.

And the sky above him split open.

Not with violence

But with revelation.

A colossal celestial gate unfurled across the heavens, formed of rotating sigils, spiraling galaxies, and burning constellations. Starlight poured through it, cascading like silver rain.

Kael's breath caught.

His chest tightened.

A single figure descended.

Tall.

Slender.

Wrapped in flowing robes woven from cosmic light.

Her hair shimmered like liquid moonfire, cascading endlessly down her back. Her eyes burned with swirling galaxies, ancient wisdom and sorrow colliding within their depths.

Every step she took reshaped the air.

Reality bent around her presence.

She landed softly before Kael, bare feet touching broken stone.

"The Stormborn," she whispered.

Her voice echoed across dimensions.

Kael swallowed.

"Who are you?"

She studied him for a long moment.

"I am Astraea," she said gently. "Last Oracle of the Celestial Archive. Keeper of the Broken Prophecy."

Kael felt a chill creep up his spine.

"Prophecy?"

Astraea lifted one hand.

The world shattered into stars.

Kael stood inside a cosmic void.

Endless galaxies spun around him. Collapsing stars screamed silently. Massive celestial bodies clashed and disintegrated, birthing supernovas that painted infinity in fire and shadow.

Astraea floated before him, her form glowing softly.

"This universe," she said, "has ended before."

Kael's breath stuttered.

"Countless times."

Visions unfolded.

Civilizations rising.

Empires ruling.

Gods warring.

And always.

Destruction.

A cycle of annihilation.

A war older than time itself.

"The Dominion is merely one instrument," Astraea continued. "A tool shaped by entities that exist beyond dimensional law. They are called the Architects."

Kael clenched his fists.

"The Commander… he mentioned Architects."

Astraea nodded. "They are reality engineers. They erase entire universes when balance shifts beyond control."

Images flooded Kael's mind.

Entire galaxies collapsing.

Stars extinguished.

Reality torn apart.

And in every vision

One figure remained standing at the center of destruction.

Kael.

Radiant Blaze blazing.

First Flame burning.

But each time

He burned with it.

Consumed.

Erased.

A sharp pain tore through Kael's chest.

"No…"

Astraea's voice softened. "The Radiant Blaze is not merely power. It is a universal reset key. A failsafe designed by the First Creators to prevent total collapse."

Kael's breathing became shallow.

"In every cycle," she continued, "a bearer is chosen. One who can channel both creation and destruction. One who can rewrite the fate of existence."

Kael whispered, "And that bearer… is me."

"Yes."

The word echoed through infinity.

"But every bearer before you failed."

The visions shifted.

War.

Loss.

Betrayal.

Madness.

And always

Loneliness.

Each bearer died alone, consumed by the very flame meant to save all.

Kael's chest tightened violently.

"Why?"

"Because power without anchor becomes tyranny. And compassion without strength becomes sacrifice."

Kael lowered his head.

Astraea stepped closer, her presence warm yet unbearably heavy.

"You are different," she said. "You still breathe as a human. You still fear. You still care."

Kael's jaw clenched.

"Then why do I feel like I'm breaking every time I use it?"

"Because the Radiant Blaze burns both body and soul. Each time you awaken the First Flame, you shorten your lifespan."

Kael froze.

"How much?"

Astraea hesitated.

"Each full ignition costs years. Sometimes decades."

Silence swallowed him.

Images of Arielle. Chase. Lysander. The civilians. The city.

The future he barely dared to imagine.

"You will not live long," Astraea said softly. "But your choices will decide whether existence does."

Kael's breathing faltered.

Then steadied.

In.

Out.

"So this is my curse."

"No," Astraea whispered. "It is your trial."

She extended her hand.

A glowing crystal tome materialized, orbiting her palm.

"The Prophecy of Broken Stars. Only you can read it."

Kael hesitated.

Then touched it.

Pain exploded through his skull.

His mind flooded with knowledge beyond comprehension.

Ancient wars.

Forgotten gods.

Dimensional maps.

Hidden realms.

The Seven Divine Flames.

The Twelve Architects.

The Void Throne.

And

The Final Convergence.

A future where Kael stood at the heart of collapsing reality, forced to choose:

Destroy existence to reset the cycle.

Or sacrifice himself to break it.

Kael screamed.

His knees buckled.

Astraea caught him, lowering him gently to the void's surface.

His chest heaved violently.

Breath ragged.

Tears streamed down his face.

"I don't want this," he whispered.

Astraea knelt before him.

"No bearer ever does."

Kael's hands trembled.

"What happens if I refuse?"

"Then the Architects erase this universe. Slowly. Methodically. Painfully."

Kael shut his eyes.

The faces of those he loved flashed before him.

He inhaled deeply.

Then exhaled.

Slow.

Controlled.

"No," he whispered. "I won't let that happen."

Astraea smiled faintly.

"That is why you were chosen."

Reality returned.

Rain fell once more.

The city breathed again.

Astraea stood before Kael, her form already fading.

"I cannot remain," she said. "But I will guide you when the time comes."

Kael reached out. "Wait how do I stop them?"

Her voice echoed softly. "Seek the Seven Flames. Unite them. Only then can the cycle be broken."

"And if I fail?"

Her eyes darkened. "Then you become the final star."

She vanished.

The sky sealed.

The rain resumed.

Kael stood alone on the ruined spire, chest rising and falling in slow, steady breaths.

The war had only begun.

And now

He knew what it would cost.

Far beyond reality, deep within the Void Throne, twelve colossal figures stirred.

"The Oracle has revealed the truth," one murmured.

"Accelerate the Convergence," another commanded.

A throne of black starlight pulsed.

"The Stormborn will either ascend," a final voice whispered, "or end all things."

Kael turned toward the burning horizon.

His eyes burned brighter than the storm.

"Then I'll rewrite fate itself."

And the universe trembled.
