Chapter 1 - Prologue

"Dash! Wait up!"

Jaas chased after his friend, who was running as fast as he could for no reason.

They had been just walking down on the streets when Dash had suddenly stiffened up and stared ahead without blinking. Jaas had called out for him several times, but he had not responded. Then Jaas followed his gaze, only to find a huge line for an ice cream shop which had opened very recently.

Jaas was confused. Did Dash want ice cream? Then why was he just standing there without blinking? He was about to ask whether he wanted it or not when Dash had put a hand to his heart, breathing deep and hard. A faint blush could be seen on his cheeks, which had made Jaas extremely uncomfortable for some reason.

"Dude, are you okay?" He had asked. But instead of replying, Dash had turned and ran as fast as he could.

Jaas had no choice but to chase him. Was Dash afraid of something? There were not so many things that could frighten his pack leader. Then this must be something very serious, though he could not understand the danger.

Jaas chased Dash down to the woods, and beyond it to the pack grounds and all the way to their residence. Dash had been always faster than him, but right now he seemed faster than ever. Cursing under his breath, Jaas chased him closely behind only to see Dash going in to his bedroom. Before Jaas could enter the room, the door was slammed on his face.

Not knowing what to do, Jaas leaned against the door and tried to catch his breath. He was faster than most of the members of his pack, but Dash was an exception. And they had actually run three miles in less than a minute. He paused for a second, contemplating whether or not to eavesdrop. Then he decided t be hell with it and pushed his ear against the door. If his Alpha was planning to commit suicide for some reason, it was his job as his right-hand man to prevent that from happening.

With his excellent hearing, it was not hard for him to notice the muffled sounds that came from the room. Was Dash crying? Like, for real? That idiot had not cried even when his parents died, so why would he be crying now? Jaas could feel his heart fill up with various conclusions to that question. Feeling like he would go crazy if he thought too much, he knocked on the door. "Dash, open up."

"Go away." Dash responded. Jaas was taken aback by the tone of his voice. Then a strong dominance pheromone hit him through the door, making his knees buckle. It was oppressing at the same time filled with… tenderness?

Realization hit him at that moment. "Are you on rut? Right now? Without even the blood moon?'

"Will you go the fuck away?" Dash growled through the door. "I don't want to do this with you listening, you son of a- "

"Okay, okay!" Jaas practically ran to get away from the pheromones that was practically crushing him. Why the fuck did his pack leader go to rut in broad day light? Were there any wolves with him when that happened? He thought back, hard. He was good with faces, so he was sure that they hadn't run into any wolf when they were out. Were their any female wolves hiding? But he had not detected any wolf scent either. May be that person had been hiding their scent. Either way, he had a feeling that a Luna was finally going to come to them.

He was so deep in his thoughts that he hadn't even seen the figure before he ran into a figure. Before the collided, Han's strong alpha scent pierced through his nose. Though it did not hurt, he was pushed back a several meters.

"Watch where you are going." Han, who had been running in the opposite direction, complained while frowning. "Did you guys buy everything on my list? Why are you back so soon?'

Jaas took a deep breath before explaining the bizarre situation he just faced. Han stared at him after he finished.

"What?" Jaas asked.

Han opened his mouth and closed it again. "Never mind."

"Oh, come on dude, I almost listened to Dash jerking off. You got to give me some explanation if you have it."

"I don't have an explanation." Han said. Seeing Jaas's disbelieving face, he sighed. "Well, it's not exactly an explanation. I just wanted to say that you were there when that happened and," he paused. "You are a wolf too."

"Don't be ridiculous." Dash, who appeared in the hallway answered for Jaas. "Stop reading all those stupid stories. You are getting too many weird ideas."

"Then what happened?" Han asked while Jaas breathed a sigh of relief.

"Simple. I just met my mate." Dash said.

Jaas smiled triumphantly. He had known it. "Where was she?" He asked. "I didn't see or scent any wolf."

Dash ran a hand through his hair as he leaned against the wall, looking tired. "See, that's the problem."

Han, who was quietly listening this whole time, raised his eyebrows. "What's the problem?"

Dash looked at the ceiling before replying. "She was a human."

"What?!" Jaas and Han asked in unison. Jaas's thoughts ran everywhere inside his head as he tried to process that information. Human? How was that possible?

"Maybe you saw wrong." Han said, voicing some of the thoughts Jaas thought. "Maybe she was a wolf from another territory visiting here. Maybe she was hiding her scent."

"That is indeed possible." Jaas piped in. "We should look into- "

"No." Dash said. "I am not going to do anything. She is indeed a human, and I had seen her on newspaper several times. I am going to keep my distance, no matter how hard it is."

"A wolf can never stay away from his mate." Jaas said, feeling sorry for his leader, and more, his friend. "Wait, did you say newspaper? "He thought back to the ice cream shop. "Oh my god! Ava Bellings?"

Hans eyes widened as he heard the name. Dash nodded solemnly. They drifted in to an uncomfortable silence for a while.

"So," Dash spoke, finally breaking the silence. "We are sending a spy to the Bellings. He would report everywhere she goes to me, so I can stay away from her, withing a radius of ten miles. If I do something stupid that would threaten to expose our identity, you guys stop me at any cost."

Jaas worriedly looked at his Alpha. "Forget about wolves for a moment, Dash. Are you going to be okay?"

"It's not something I can do. Forgetting about wolves, I mean." Dash said. "I have to carry on my father's legacy. We will not talk about this after today. That's it."

He detached himself from the wall and went back to his room. Jaas looked at his retreating back, worried.
