Chapter 1 - Spencer Raymund

Heroes of Tomorrow: Hidden Potential

by Eloy Lasanta

Chapter One: Not New to This

All your training. All your time as a sidekick. It's led you to this pivotal moment.

You take a deep breath and open your eyes to a completely white room. The walls are forged from blinding lights so bright that you're forced to squint. There is no furniture, no obstacles, just wide-open space designed to force an evo to depend on their learned skills and talents to survive life's many trials. And that's what this is…the White Room Trial, a proving ground for Evos Academy, where the next generation of evos are turned into heroes.

Evos, as in the next stage of human "evo"-lution, are people with superpowers. The term arose over two hundred years ago along with the first heroes and villains and has stuck around today. It's a term worn with pride by most, though some use it as a way to make evos more than human, something different from the norm. You haven't been an evo long, so you're still getting used to the slang applying to you.

A number of shadowy silhouettes stand above the lights behind tinted glass. Most of them, you surmise, are members of Earth's mightiest superhero team, the Wardens of Truth, each of them a legend in their own right. None of them can intercede during your test, but their ominous posture is meant to keep initiates on their toes.

How can an untested, newly powered individual perform their best when famous icons are watching them? Making it through this means the evo deserves to move forward.

It's a good thing you're not new to this.
