Chapter 7
Trap
Tanyah looked at the little teapot that was set safely on
the table and only there, away from her and the dangers she
had put it through. And on the other side of the table was a
deadly handsome man staring at her like she was a criminal
caught in the act.
Oh, how the tables have turned on her.
She was the detective here and she was being treated
like a convict and this man was the prosecutor.
Tanyah could feel his intense eyes boring into her, and
she couldn't help but shrink into the couch she was sitting
on. She heard him sigh and he put the glass he was holding
on the table.
56
"So, this is what Victor sent for me?"
There was a bit of a pause as Nicholas stood up and
grabbed the glass that was on the table and walked off to the
other side of the room. Only then did she raise her head.
After the embarrassing incident, he helped her sit on the
sofa and had the butler bring her some more comfortable
shoes. She almost broke the little teapot, which turned out to
be a treasure for Charles. It was part of the several collections
that Charles' sister sent him.
Nicholas knew how important those little antiques were
to his uncle Charles so he was very thankful he arrived at the
right time to avoid the so-called 'gift of pleasure' Victor sent
him, from breaking anything. She was a real troublesome
thing and he didn't have to wait days to figure that out, it
was just written all over.
"Damn."
He softly cursed underneath his breath as he just figured
out what happened. He was about to refill his whiskey when
he stopped mid-way. There was no sexy woman that Victor
was giving to him... Wait. As his mind was in the middle of a
rampage he turned his head and looked at the woman on the
sofa. Big and wide eyes stared at him as she bit her part of
her lower lip.
'Does she have any idea what she's doing,' asked
Nicholas to himself. She wasn't so bad, actually she was
57
perfect. He returned his attention to his glass as he continued
what he was doing. He wanted to go lower and have a full
body scan to see what he was dealing with, but it would only
make him out as a pervert and probably blow his chances of
actually being with her. Wait... Was he actually going
through with this?
'Damn you Victor!' He echoed the words in his mind as
he started to put the puzzle pieces together and realize how
much of a fool he was and how Victor just won himself a
victory.
Victor laid the perfect bait for him and he sprung
beautifully into the trap without thinking. Firstly, the
woman, then the beautiful holiday vacation which turned
out to be a lie. The time he actually thought he was safe was
when he just became the perfect victim.
After pouring himself a glass of whiskey he went back to
sit down on the sofa opposite the woman. As soon as he sat
down and looked at her in the hopes to start a conversation,
she quickly looked down avoiding eye contact and looking
at him. How was he going to succeed when she was acting
like this? It's not as if she didn't know that Victor was selling
her to him.
She's supposed to know the terms and conditions of
their situation and what to expect here on out. But by the
looks of it that wasn't how things are turning out. Did she
58
want some roses and wine, to be wined and dined before
being taken to bed?
'Damn it to hell.'
Nicholas was on the brink of going to the other side of
the table, holding her by the shoulders and wringing her
until her hair was a mess. He was already angry and about to
explode with the situation Victor had put him into. He had
no time to play around, his fists were itching to just land a
punch on Victor. But first things first, he needed to resolve
things with this woman in front of him.
He cleared his throat as he prepared to deliver his
speech.
"I hope you are aware of the reason why Victor sent you
here."
Tanyah lifted her head up and she looked at him. It took
all her strength to focus and push her embarrassment aside
so she could focus. Not wanting to look at his face, she
decided to focus on his hair. She wished she could run her
fingers through his beautiful hair...but she quickly brought
her mind back to reality. This was her new boss and she was
supposed to be respectful and mindful towards him… and
his hair.
He began talking about how she should be comfortable
doing anything she wanted to in accordance with her work
and both their needs. Now that he mentioned it, Tanyah
59
didn't know exactly who she was supposed to be here. To
quickly evade any questions, she nodded in response to his
question.
Nicholas gave out a long sigh to refresh his mind after
talking and setting a few things he wanted.
"Ok. I'll have to ask for a room prepared for you close by
upstairs or the guest house if you want more space to
yourself. If you need anything you can ask anyone."
He lifted the glass towards his mouth and took a sip
from the contents so he could assert his thoughts a bit more.
"So? Are ready to be my…," he paused for a bit as he
wondered what he was about to say was right.
"Partner…Woman. Uhh... concubine. No, that's not right.
Girlfriend?"
The Guest House.
This was a cute little house in the middle of the estate.
The house was surrounded by a large portion of the
mansion, then the garden. The guest house was a landlocked
place, located at the centre and completely enveloped by the
mansion and its landscape. Tanyah looked around as she
stood outside the house.
60
It was very beautiful and quiet, if it weren't for her work
she would have relaxed outside while reading a book. She
could even start a new hobby like painting because the
scenery was a perfect reference and inspiration
But unfortunately. life had other plans, tomorrow was
the day her mission of infiltration and data collection would
begin. She had to get Intel from the people who were present
on the estate for at least a year. They would have an idea of
Charles' life and how his last days were.
Nicholas was currently out of picture for him to be of
any importance. For now, he was just an excuse for her to be
here.
4:36 am. Louis arrived at the outskirts of the Sinclair
estate. Since it was dark he couldn't quite see because it was
dark but the moonlight managed to give him a glimpse, and
it was nothing short of spectacular. The place marked as
part of the Sinclair estate was huge, the grasslands and
mountains added as the complementary of its beauty.
As he was looking around, Louis spotted a dark figure
walking towards him. The person was wearing all-black and
had their face covered by a mask. He went where the person
was and when they were near each other the other person
removed their mask.
61
"Detective," greeted Louis.
"Louis. How are you doing?"
Louis nodded his head and signalled for Detective
Tanyah to follow him. Before going far, they looked around
to make sure they weren't being watched or followed. They
went to the car Louis came with and they continued their
conversation.
"I'm ok, I thought I would be enjoying my time off but it
seems fate has other plans. How are things here so far."
"One misfortune after the other," said Tanyah. She didn't
even want to be reminded of what went down that day as it
was a mission doomed from the beginning. She was beyond
mortified when Nicholas asked some questions that she
never expected to hear. At the end of the day she was sent to
stay at the guest house and she would go to the mansion if
she was summoned or given work there.
She was a bit happy because she wouldn't have to face
Nicholas for most of the time especially after their awkward
conversation about their new-found relationship. But on the
most part she was greatly disadvantaged by the setup
because her field of investigation just got cut short. The
mansion was where Charles's office and where she could get
more information about him. Now she had to take every
single opportunity she got in that house and collect as much
data as possible.
62
Louis opened the back of his car, took out a black bag
and a briefcase and handed them to Tanyah.
"I found something as I was leaving the police
department," said Louis as he took out some pictures and
showed them to Tanyah. She looked at the pictures and she
immediately recognized what was in the picture as a family
seal. The day she was searching about the crest that was on
Victor's scarf she also learned about family seals which held
great significance and identity of a prestigious family.
The seal was used to sign off important documents,
letters and contracts. Whoever's hands the seal was in had a
lot of power and control as they could sign or write anything
and it is considered the true words and nothing else.
Before leaving the police department that day, he tried
his best to stick around a bit longer without being noticed by
other officers and the lieutenant because he had a feeling that
he should find out about this woman. Unfortunately, he
didn't manage to get much information on the woman who
had the seal but he did get someone to take some images of
it.
Louis asked an officer to approach the woman and get a
thing or two on her. The officer told the woman that they
had to search her things to see what she was carrying for
security reasons and that's when he took some pictures of
the seal and sent them to Louis.
63
At first, he was scared that the Lieutenant would refuse
the officer's request to check the woman's belongings
because they were together in the lieutenant's office, but he
was more focused on the woman and just wanted the officer
to leave and the woman also didn't seem to mind the
search.
"I wasn't able to see who it was, but I have a feeling this
person might be of interest, so I'll try to keep my eyes on
them."
