Chapter 83 - Chapter 83: As Satisfying as Always

Week after week, Code Geass Season 2 aired episode after episode on television.

One by one, the plot holes left earlier were filled in.

For example, in the final scene where Lelouch and Suzaku faced off with guns, although it seemed like only one shot rang out, both had fired. Neither hit a fatal spot. Suzaku, being physically stronger, then charged toward Lelouch at full speed and subdued him in a few swift moves.

Afterward, Suzaku brought Lelouch before the Britannian Emperor, hoping to earn a seat among the Knights of the Round Table for capturing Zero.

The Emperor agreed.

Furthermore, this Emperor possessed Geass—the power to alter people's memories.

He had altered Lelouch's memories.

The reason for letting Lelouch return to school was to lure out C.C. and capture her.

However, since so few people knew about Geass, the operation was exploited during the arrest attempt. The result was that C.C. escaped, and Lelouch regained his memories.

Rolo wasn't Lelouch's real brother. He was an assassin sent by the Empire to infiltrate Lelouch's inner circle. His mission was to capture C.C., and if Lelouch regained his memories and Zero was "revived," to kill Lelouch.

The one who actually gave him this mission wasn't the Imperial Emperor, but V.V.—the man who had kidnapped Nunnally at the end of the first season.

V.V. appeared to be just a child, but his true identity was the elder brother of the Imperial Emperor, and like C.C., he possessed an immortal body.

The Imperial Emperor's Geass originated with V.V. And that wasn't all: Rolo, Lelouch's fake brother, possessed a Geass that allowed him to stop the subjective time of others within a small range. Though not explicitly stated, there was no doubt that this Geass also came from V.V.

In the first episode of the second season, Karen had clearly succeeded in taking Lelouch away, but Rolo quickly caught up to her, and she inexplicably stumbled. By the time she regained her senses, Rolo had already taken Lelouch away. This was all because Rolo had activated his Geass.

After regaining his memories, Lelouch quickly realized that his younger brother, Rolo, was an imposter. However, he and the remaining members of the Black Knights who had come to rescue him were still in danger and couldn't escape. Lelouch had no choice but to command the remaining Black Knights to fight against the Empire.

During the battle, Rolo, piloting a Knightmare Frame, nearly caused Lelouch's downfall. It was Ube Takayuki, one of the Four Holy Swords who had come to rescue him, who sacrificed his life to help Lelouch, allowing him and the remaining Black Knights to secure victory and escape safely.

Later, dressed in Zero's attire, Lelouch delivered a declaration on television, announcing that Zero had returned and would reestablish the United States of Japan.

Regaining his memories, regaining his powers, winning a great battle, and making a resurrection declaration on television—all of these were undoubtedly satisfying moments.

However, Lelouch still faced numerous problems.

Firstly, he had to continue pretending, acting as if he hadn't regained his memories, and pretending that the revived Zero had nothing to do with him. Otherwise, Rolo and Villetta, the physical education teacher planted in the school, wouldn't let him off the hook. Moreover, he still didn't know Nunnally's situation and dared not reveal to the Empire that he had regained his memories.

Meanwhile, the Empire had captured the main members of the Black Knights, including Ougi, Toudou, and three of the Four Holy Swords (excluding Ube Takayuki), and they were about to be executed. Lelouch needed to rescue these crucial members without revealing that he had recovered his memories.

Pretending to have lost his memories wasn't difficult for Lelouch. The real challenge lay elsewhere.

After some deliberation, Lelouch concluded that his first priority was to "conquer" his fake younger brother, Rolo, and turn him from an enemy into an ally.

This necessity was compounded by his personal resentment. He was deeply annoyed that his younger sister, Nunnally, had been replaced by this interloper who had materialized out of nowhere.

In his own words:

"No one remembers Nunnally anymore—no, my sister's been replaced by this fake brother. Not only did they tamper with my memories, but they're treating every member of the Student Council like toys. This is going too far."

"Rolo may be a dangerous card, but he has his uses. I don't have time to hesitate."

"You imposter who usurped Nunnally's place—I'll drain every last drop of your blood and discard you like a rag!"

Lelouch brilliantly resolved an extremely difficult crisis, successfully managing two fronts simultaneously. In a single operation, he not only rescued Ougi, Toudou, and the others but also won over Rolo, turning him from an enemy into an ally.

Later, Lelouch discovered what had transpired between Villetta and Ougi during her memory loss.

He threatened, "Villetta, you don't want our relationship to be exposed, do you?" Though displeased, Villetta had no choice but to switch allegiances to Lelouch's side.

Apart from Nunnally's whereabouts remaining unknown, Lelouch had successfully resolved all the immediate problems facing him.

The previous section was satisfying, but this one is even more so.

However, new problems quickly arose.

The new Governor of Area 11 had been confirmed: it was Nunnally.

Returning to school from Britannia, Suzaku dialed Nunnally's number to test whether Lelouch had regained his memories. Using the few seconds Lelouch had gained through Rolo's Geass manipulation, he briefly explained his situation to Nunnally. To avoid revealing his recovered memories, he then pretended not to recognize her.

While Nunnally was being escorted to Area 11, Lelouch launched an attack with the Black Knights, hoping to rescue her.

However, after finally seeing Nunnally, she didn't recognize him as Zero and even told him his methods were wrong.

Then, Nunnally expressed her wish to carry on Euphemia's legacy by rebuilding the Special Administrative Zone of Japan and, like Euphemia before her, invited Lelouch, the man known as Zero, to join her.

Lelouch was deeply shaken, caught in a painful dilemma.

At that moment, the Governor's escort ship malfunctioned and was about to crash. Suzaku arrived on the Lancelot.

Lelouch rushed toward Nunnally, determined to take her away, but Nunnally instead moved toward Suzaku.

In the end, Nunnally was taken away by Suzaku, and Lelouch's plan failed.

This setback deeply shook Lelouch, nearly driving him to despair. It wasn't until later that he realized his fight was no longer just for Nunnally.

Deep beneath the sea, the submarine where the Black Knights were hiding was discovered. Facing imminent annihilation, Lelouch rallied his forces and led them through the crisis. He then announced that the entire Black Knights would join the Neon Special District.

This decision stunned the Empire's representatives.

During secret talks with Suzaku and others, Lelouch proposed mobilizing a million people for the district's inauguration, on the condition that Zero be spared—his crimes ignored, with only exile as punishment. The others could be punished according to their crimes.

The Empire's delegates couldn't comprehend his reasoning. Some even mocked him, accusing him of betraying those who believed in him, all to save himself.

On the day of the inauguration, countless people indeed gathered. But when the pardon for Zero was announced, smoke bombs erupted from the crowd. The Black Knights present donned black robes, cloaks, and helmets, transforming themselves into living embodiments of Zero.

Zero had ceased to be a person; he had become a symbol. Pardoning Zero now meant pardoning every member of the Black Knights.

Suzaku and the others stood dumbfounded, watching helplessly as the people dressed as Zero left openly and brazenly.

Over the next several episodes, there were certainly moments of tension and conflict, but nothing too severe. Overall, the story maintained its satisfying, feel-good tone.

The audience loved it, devouring every moment. Naturally, the show's popularity remained strong, with positive reviews pouring in.

Episode 8 was particularly brilliant: a million people dressed as Zero marched openly out of Area 11, utterly humiliating the Empire. It was a masterstroke, and after the episode aired, the animation's popularity surged even higher. Merchandise, especially Zero-themed sets—including custom helmets priced at over 30,000 yen each—sold like hotcakes.

Riding the wave of the animation's explosive popularity, Lin Zhiyan announced details about the first DVD volume of the second season, including the exact release date and special bonuses.
